No, I think Sanchez has the talent to be a good QB in the NFL. This whole thread I have stated he won't be a Jet in 2014. All we can do is wait and see how he does on a new team. If he is terrible, you and others were right, if he does well, then I and others were right. He won't be a Jets fan's problem to think about much longer.
A lot of QB's have the talent to be a good QB. That doesn't say anything. I think he has value as a backup due to his experience. He's not a starting QB. But if he does start I hope he goes to a team with all the talent in the world. I don't want any excuses.
That's the annoying argument I hate. They say that while totally disregarding the fact that during his first 3 seasons he did have weapons. Sure he didn't have an elite guy to throw to but, Edwards, Cotchery, Holmes, Burress, Kerley, and Keller were not terrible. You could do a lot worse then some combo of those guys. Luck doesnt have better weapons then Mark had. Wilson doesn't have an elite pass catcher. I can name plenty of other guys who don't have an elite receiver as well. They all seem to manage and get by because they're talented. Mark simply isn't all that good. Good QB's help make the talent around them. Do some benefit from having an elite receiver or tight end? Of course. But not all of them. What's the point of drafting and investing big money in a QB if he needs a star studded cast around him to be any good? Shouldn't the guy you drafted 5th overall be the star and be a player capable of elevating others? I'm not saying he should be able to throw to anybody, but I hate when people overlook the fact that he was a below average player when he had talent to throw to as well. They act like 2012 is what Mark was always stuck with.
I noticed that too. They think that because we didn't have Fitzgerald, Megatron or Reggie Wayne that he didn't have any talent around him.
The thing about Sanchez is that he's always been the worst play maker on the offense. Edwards, Holmes and Cotchery were proven play makers in the NFL. They made some plays with Sanchez. But they didn't make as many as they made with other QB's before Sanchez. Tomlinson was a proven play maker in the NFL and he did revive in 2010 when matched with Sanchez and the Jets other play makers. However it was obvious that LT was the better half of the combo there, even at his advanced age for a RB. Keller never turned into a bigger play maker because he was handicapped by the guy throwing to him. He clearly had the talent to be a play maker as a TE, not elite but capable of making plays, and he just never got that going as well as he should have. The common denominator here was Mark Sanchez. All of the guys listed above should have been part of a fairly high-powered offense. All of them were held back by the trigger man. Was Sanchez good at times for stretches, particularly at times near the end of the game? Sure, but that's not worth a lot in the NFL. You have to be consistently good to be worth much in this league. Hot and cold doesn't do it for long and that's all the Jets ever got out of Sanchez.
Keller was a top 10TE in 2012 in Mark Sanchez' worst year. Mostly because Sanchez had no one else to throw to. Keller's problem is that he could never stay healthy. ( See this year ) Except none of them have done anything spectacular and the people here say Holmes is garbage. All of these players, if given a chance to develop with a QB, could be solid weapons. By themselves none of them are game breakers, and only one of them is a full time player. I'm not sure how you can say that Sanchez held them back. Sanchez was known to have maturity issues come out of school having only started 16 games. He obviously regressed a bit in 2012 but to say that he's to far gone to ever repair is pretty crazy to me. I've seen him make big plays and he's got the heart to play the game. Again I'm not saying to just put him in at starter, But if he'd come back at a reasonable price to try and prove himself here I'd welcome him back. I'm not showing him the door because he's upset me in the past. Right now there are no better options.
There are much better options, starting with moving on from the guy we know can't get the job done at this point. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Nothing is certain in the NFL. Anyone to claims to "know" that Sanchez can't get it done should consider themselves just as dumb as if I said I "know" Sanchez *could* get it done here. No one knows, But the truth is with our draft position and the current flock of NFL FA QB's there's not a better option out there, and Sanchez has the most fire right now to try and succeed. Wherever he plays next year, here or otherwise, he's going to basically be playing for his career. At the right price, With his pedigree and track history of getting some big wins early in his career, Why would you not take that player in and let him compete?
After 62 career games you can come to a decision. Could Sanchez go somewhere and have the light turn on all of a sudden? Sure, like you said, anything is possible in the NFL. But the Jets can't think that way. He's been here for a long time now. He's not a rookie anymore. He hasn't got the job done. He's been an inconsistent below average QB for the large majority of his time here minus some good playoff performances. But the Jets can't just look at the small percentage of good and brush aside the large percentage of bad. We don't know that there isn't a better option out there at QB, either via the draft or FA. Your so sure Mark's better then Shaun Hill? Tarvaris Jackson? Michael Vick? I'm not. I dont think those guys are anything special but Sanchez isn't either. JMO.
Because we've already done that... You make it seem like fighting for his career will motivate him to become a better player. Well...his job was on the line in 2013, no? he had has back frmly to the wall then I'd say, he was given nothing but a chance to prove he was unquestionably the teams best option moving forward, AND... he barely separated from the raw rookie. they know what he looks like in this offense, they don't need to see more to gauge what he's like. Just as well heres something everybody's missing... the veteran we want to bring in is NOT meant to be a long term answer. They're meant to be a plan B for Geno and MAYBE a holdover for the next guy should Smith fail. We're all acting as if this is his best chance to revive his career when in reality Mark Sanchez has 0 chance at reviving his career in NY, and staying here under a smaller shorter contract is an admittance of defeat as a starter overall. Why the hell would he even WANT to come back under such terms? he'd return a FAILURE, leave an awkward space in the locker room as a guy USED to be the teams main feature and is now just an auxiliary piece thats already shown he wasn't good enough (because if he was he'd be making his money this year and Smith would be riding the bench) OR, he could go to another team with a fresh start in his favor and a new chance to impress a new regime rather than be retread not good enough to be maintained in the first place.
Sanchez COULD bounce back but the odds aren't good and theres no reason to try and find that out here. Valuable time in training camp should be used on a new target or two along with Smith and Simms, theres nothing sure enough with Sanchez that says we just HAVE to have him back and frankly his career needs a new locale.
Sanchez threw 8 count em' 8 TOUCHDOWNS to an old guy who had been in prison for 3 years. He had 32 total TD's in 2011, the most in Jets history. The two years before that season he won 4 playoff games and played well in both AFC Championship Games. In 2012 he had Tony Sparano as his Offensive Coordinator, No weapons at all to throw to, and Tim Tebow breathing down his neck. Not that complicated to see why some Jets fans feel he deserves another shot.
The problem is the late season collapses. Sanchez has been a bad QB in December the last two seasons he played. It's no coincidence that the Jets managed to have their first up December in awhile with somebody else at QB. That's not saying Geno Smith played well in December but Sanchez was finding new ways to lose games in December every time he went out there.
HEAD ON - APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD ON - APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD SANCHEZ IS DOG SHIT SANCHEZ IS DOG SHIT synchronicity
I think your position on Mark Sanchez has been made perfectly clear. In other words...give us a fucking break.
The argument could rage on with both sides having enough ammunition for a long battle but the real question is this; You're the GM of a QB needy team who has some talent on offense, do you take a chance on a 27yo QB coming off the surgery he's had and given the fact that you'll be able to get him at a pretty low cap figure, to come in and compete for a starting position. I'd say the answer to that is a no brainer.
It's exhausting having to tell people over and over again that Mark Sanchez is no good. It's equally exhausting having to point out that Dustin Keller played 4 complete seasons out of 5 with the Jets and was never any good. Dustin Keller gets the ultimate revisionist history on this board. 2008 - 16 games, 48 rcpts, 535 yds, 3 TDs 2009 - 16 games, 45 rcpts, 522 yds, 2 TDs 2010 - 16 games, 55 rcpts, 687 yds, 5 TDs 2011 - 16 games, 65 rcpts, 815 yds, 5 TDs 2012 - 8 games, 28 rcpts, 317 yds, 2 TDs Can we please stop pretending like Keller was ever really that good? Ignoring the numbers, he dropped too many easy passes and wasn't a very good blocker. We can blame the numbers on Sanchez if you want. Personally? I think both of them sucked. But if you're of the mindset that Keller and Sanchez were BOTH good, can you please just pick one? You know that they weren't both good. With that said, it doesn't excuse Mark Sanchez from being a horrible REGULAR SEASON quarterback for his entire career. I have to throw regular season in there because the only thing I agree with the supporters on is that he was great in the playoffs.
Not that complicated to figure out why a lot of us don't want him back then either. One year was statistically any good. Had an elite defense the two years they were able to accomplish anything. Never learned from his mistakes. Extremely mistake-prone. A career completion percentage of 55.1% with 195 yards per game. More INTs than TDs. Constantly left plenty of yards, first downs, and even TDs on the field because he could never hit a receiver in stride, whether they were 5 yards or 35 yards away, which to me, made the receivers that much more impressive (since they were so bad according to everyone).
if we think mark is good it means we think he is the greatest according to these folks that hate him. he's never had what Eli has had, what Flacco has had, what Dalton has, what Romo has had, what Schaub has had, what Ryan has had, etc... He had decent talent early in his career and we made 2 title games, as the talent eroded the wins left w/ it. He's not Tom Brady, he's not winning w/ Chaz Schilens. No one is besides MAYBE Brady. Know when Braylon's highest yds per rec was? 2010, know who was his QB? Know Santonio's 2nd best season was in 2010, know who the QB was? Holmes played 11 games this year and had 23 recs and 1 TD, in 2010 he played in 12 games and had 52 and 6. I don't know that Cotch has ever been called a playmaker before and he was 2nd/3rd WR for us w/ Mark so of course his opportunities will go down. Not to mention he was banged up in 2010. Interestingly enough w/ a broken down Chad and Kellen Clemens splitting the 2007 season Cotch had 82 recs, 1130 yds then a year later w/ a future HOFer he had 71-858 in one MORE game. Keller is what he is and he got better under mark than when he played w/ a future HOfer in 2008. all of those guys had their best/2nd best years w/ Mark but keep making things up, some folks will actually believe you. and this was done w/o a pass heavy offense.
