I'm a Rex guy,But he would be an idiot not to accept the extension. Its not like he made the playoffs he did a good job but the one extra year is all he deserves at the moment. He's a moron for not taking care of this already
Why would Rex be thrilled with signing a 1yr $4-5M contract with Idzik when he could probably command a 5yr $7-9M/yr contract with Browns? Or worse. Brady and Belli might call it a career in a year or two. Rex Ryan is one of the few coaches to have success against them and would be high on the list of new head coaches for the Pats. Rex already has his Pats gear from 'That's my boy'
In the thread on the other site, it said that those 6 Assistants were free now to speak with other teams. This was also posted, although I don't know how credible it is.
I think you're blowing way too much smoke up Rex's ass. Rex is NOT a great coach, he's a great GUY and players love playing for him. He's more of a motivator then a great coach. The smartest thing the Jets can do is give Rex the 1 year extension so he's not a lame duck and load up the offense with the weapons it needs to succeed. Rex still needs to prove his worth in the coaching world and the Jets, for once, are doing the right thing by taking a wait and see approach,
I don't know the rule, but Shefter said this morning on NFL Live that they are free to interview for other positions.
Let em all walk, HC on down. Get some coaches who teach fundamentals. We probably make the playoffs if we only committed half of the presnap penalties we had this year.
Following is a late post in the thread where I initially found the info for this thread. It makes some sense.
It would make no sense to keep Rex, yet force a new DC on him, when we all know he is the defacto DC whether someone has the title or not. Just like Patricia in NE, Thurman's job is to execute the HC's marching orders.
Dunbar would be the only significant loss here. Dennis Thurman wasn't too impressive last season. I'm okay with Anthony Lynn. The rest can all go fuck their collective selves.
What do you think everyone has agreed on a deal and they're just waiting for the sky to turn a certain shade before they ink it? Nothing to be concerned with barcs, everything is rainbows and unicorns.
Well, he should be, as all HCs should be allowed to hire their coaches, but in the Jets dysfunctional universe, anything is possible. I think we'd probably all be surprised at some of the behind the scenes maneuvering and scheming that go on.
Wish we could get some news. It won't happen but I'd like to grab Schwartz as our DC and switch to the 4-3. Coples is a defensive end not an outside linebacker. The front 7 would be Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison, and Coples up front. Pace/Barnes, Davis/Harris, ROLB (TBD).
Coples was very disruptive at olb once he got into the swing of it. We aren't going to hire a big name at DC with Rex here. It would be like Sean Payton having a big named OC.
They should just bring Thurman back. He knows this system and has been teaching it for years, he should remain if Rex is remaining.
The only thing that makes sense about Idzik telling Rex who his DC is, is that Idzik is thinking beyond Rex and wants one of his guys to learn the defense. I'm sure Rex can sniff that out a mile away.
You stated that like you were privy to inside information about how Idzik handles contract extensions and what Rex wants. They have until the end of the month for the expiring assistant coaches contracts, so perhaps they are working on those first? This shit happens every year. Last year at this time people were complaining because we hadn't hired a GM yet. All things must be rushed or something is drastically wrong. It's the NY way. I'd rather see them take the time and do it right. Hasty thinking has been screwing up the franchise for years. I'm glad Idzik isn't following the status quo.
And if that's the case we have one fucked up operation going on here. I guess we already knew that though.
