man this thread has gotten difficult to read.... bottom line #18 is not too early for TE. as long as they dont take a freakin CB again it works for me.
They are both different players that play in different systems. Smoother means nothing to me, it's abstract. Explosive in what way? Ebron is stronger and more "explosive "breaking tackles and making tough catches in coverage. Amaro looks more like a wideout and gets better separation and is more "explosive" getting away from defenders. IMO, Amaro is clearly a better athlete, Ebron is still a great athlete but a better overall Tight End. Amaro is a mismatch nightmare against LBs in The NFL I really like both players and prefer Ebron for the Jets , but to say he's 3X more athletic than Amaro isn't true.
You're looking at a few seasons and double-visioning them into being his average season. In fact Davis has been a pretty mediocre TE in as many seasons as he has been "elite". Look at the guys who have been great TE's during the time Davis has been in the NFL. There's a really big step down in production from their slot to his except in 2009. We all understand that Jim Harbaugh made Alex Smith look a lot better than he actually was after Harbaugh took over. Same thing for Vernon Davis. If Davis was actually an elite TE he'd have been driving the offense the way the real elite TE's have been for the last decade. Instead he's a very good TE who takes what the defense gives him and steps it up a bit in the red zone.
Brdwy....you can have your opinion, Davis is a much better player than you give him credut for....I brought up Davis' name and you can't admit you were wrong. DAVIS WAS WORTH A TOP 20 PICK. I know I can't change your myopic POV, it's the way you're in this forum. I'm not going debate someone, and waste my time, that wants to agrue for the sake of arguing...you do it with everyone.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...I've only seen Amaro play once, and I know that isn't nearly enough to make a final decision on him. I need to see him play more. But in the bowl game, I saw none of the athleticism or explosion of which you speak. In fact, he looked somewhat clumsy to me and his stride wasn't "smooth" at all. He got open and made receptions, but it wasn't particularly "pretty" or a dominant performance, but rather looked more like the opposing secondary wasn't that good and Amaro just had the size advantage. Now he could have had an injury or a bad game for him, whatever. I've said previously that I need to see more film of him before I make my final decision. But based on what I've seen to date, and I've seen Ebron play a number of times, it isn't even close, Ebron is the superior athlete and has more explosion imo. He is just as much a mismatch as Amaro, if not more. I've also seen Ebron make some incredible diving, twisting one-handed grabs. I haven't seen Amaro make any of those. If I do, I'm sure my thoughts about him will begin to change. Believe me, it takes a lot for me to say that, because in general, I'm not a huge fan of UNC football players. There have been exceptions like Quinn, Peppers and LT, but many of them have been huge disappointments in the NFL, so I'm always skeptical of them when they get hyped a lot by the media and fans. I don't want to like Ebron, but I can't help it. He has really impressed me. Again, my opinion can change dramatically. You've really impressed me with your knowledge, so I value your opinion highly, and that will definitely spur me to look at more footage of Amaro.
You need to take into account the system that these TE's are in. Jimmy Graham is the undisputed #1 option in NO as Colston has been banged up and Graham is by far their best receiver. Gonzo was the #1 receiver in KC and was 1A with Roddy in Atlanta his whole time there. Gronk was 1A with Welker there. Whereas Vernon plays in a different system where the 49ers want to play smashmouth football and VD doesn't get as many opportunities as the other elite guys. The other 3 teams mentioned don't play that style and their TE's are more like #1 receivers. In terms of elite skillset you have to put Davis in that convo. Whenever he touches the ball he's a threat to score.
I study all of these top prospects and have seen them many times. I love College Football and the NY Jets. I can't say I'm a huge NFL fan, over the years the NFL has lost some of it's appeal, even though the masses love the NFL. I enjoy the process of watching College players and see their development and how they will fit in the NFL.
Excellent point! Trying to compare Davis' numbers with other TEs is like comparing apples and oranges. In SF he had Smith, a struggling QB, throwing to him, they're a run-first team, and the Niners have had Manningham, Crabtree, Bolding and others as receiving threats. KC often had no one else to throw to, and pretty much the same is true with Atlanta. Until Jones came along, White had been very inconsistent, dropping a lot of passes.
Yeah I'm typically not a big fan of UNC footballers either. One of the big flaws on Ebron is that he has mental lapses and drops easy passes. That is a huge red flag for someone you want to invest your mid first round draft pick in. I didn't know much about Amaro either until I watched him in the bowl game and saw his ridiculous stats this year (obviously skewed being at pass happy TT). Then I watched a few games like the one against Oklahoma on youtube and this kid looks like an oversized receiver. He's very long too. I think Ebron's catches were amazing and he looks like a great athlete but I just think Amaro may be a better receiving threat at the next level.
It's funny you claim they are average - yet, I don't see you bringing up any cons about them. To you they maybe average, but to others they would be worth drafting. Remember, it's not your opinion on who the Jets draft. QB is still a need. The depth chart needs to improve. Geno has not proved he is the answer at QB - if the Jets find a QB, and believe with the right coaching could become the starter guess what? The Jets will draft him and there's nothing you can do about that. So my thought process of rd1 - wr /TE, rd2 - wr, rd3a - S, rd3b - QB is not improving the team and filling holes? HAHAHA whatever bro. Btw Nick Foles pick 88 overall - you can find a starting QB in those mid-rounds - the Jets could miss out on a guy with potential that they could mold into a starting QB.
The best defensive player EVER came from UNC and in the past 3 years or so a few solid NFL players have come from UNC. There was a dry spell for a while with UNC talent. UNC may have some big concerns coming down from some academic/athletic issues and fraud....it may not be pretty. That is a concern and something that GMs will be looking at. Hopefully he does well in the combine drills.
Obviously and that's why I said typically. There's exceptions to every rule. UNC has, is and always will be a basketball school. You'll always buck the trend with a few exceptions as they're in a talent rich football region.
As I see it, the thing with Ebron is this...mental lapses and dropping easy passes is probably THE easiest flaw to fix. There's obviously no problem with his hands seeing some of the amazing catches he's made. Maturity, working with a juggs gun, and discipline will take care of the focus. Amaro may be a better receiving threat than Ebron, but as WW85 has said, he's not a better overall TE, and that's what the Jets have lacked. Keller was basically only a receiving TE. The same goes for Cumberland. It has helped to make the Jets' offense too predictable and limited. The Jets need a complete TE, not just a WR in a TE's body. That's what they've had with Cumberland, although he didn't put up the stats in college that Amaro has. As for "length", I've read that Amaro is only 1 inch taller than Ebron. That's not a huge difference. Now if Amaro has a willingness to block, and just hasn't been expected to do it or taught the fundamentals and can develop into a solid 2-way TE, great. As I've said, my mind isn't closed on him. Thanks for the heads up on the OK game. I'll be sure to check that out on YouTube.
Nah. Ebron is certainly more explosive, but Amaro is extremely smooth and fluid. Id say for comparison sake, Amaro has some Graham to him and Ebron has a lot of Vernon Davis to him. I posted this link a while back when I first started to love Amaro- http://www.draftmecca.com/newslink.php?id=24
48 catches a year. 2 Pro Bowl selections in 8 seasons. If he's worth the 20 pick it's by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin.
397 Catches, 5201 Yards, 53 TDs.........very worthy and solid career (and it isn't over) worth a Top 20 pick in Rd 1. Look at his 2013's numbers, when he needed to make up for the lose of Crabtree. Compare those numbers to Dave Casper & Kellen Winslow. I'm not saying Vernon Davis is the next Gonzo, but proving you wrong Davis was worth at the least the 20th pick. YOU CAN'T ADMIT YOU'RE EVER WRONG>>>SAD INDIVIDUAL. You spew your bullshit and argue with everyone, most of us are tired of your game.
I think there are 3 elite Te's in this draft.Ebron, Amaro & Sefarian Jenkins. In terms of receiving ability Ebron is far & away #1..and I actually like Sefarian Jenkins better than Amaro. He has alot more range & even better body control. I think Amaro will be a solid productive NFL TE..but in more of a conventional sense. He isn't gonna be running go routes like Ebron or ASJ.
I don't get the 20th pick thing about Davis. If I remember correctly he was 6th? And I think the argument could be made either way on his value. One season he's gonzo, the next he's just gone. He's had a jekyll and Hyde act his whole career. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
