Cromartie will be back with the Jets with a restructured contract. His performance was poor last year because of his injury. He should get healthy in the offseason. Cromartie is a good player. You shouldnt be getting rid of those. I doubt he'd refuse a restructure, as the players usually benefit from more money up front for making the modification. He'll be back.
Cromartie Expects He Will Be Cut... So Do I. UNLESS he comes back for cheap then we'll see how bad he wants to be a jet. I wouldnt be mad at a Sam Shields or Verner pick up either.
Particularly one who isn't an "elite" ILB and who isn't very fast and therefore leaves a lot of plays on the field (and is pretty useless in coverage).
I'm not saying that we shouldn't re-sign Cro, but there are very good CBs scheduled to hit FA: Alterranun Verner (Titans) Sam Shields (Packers) Captain Munnerlyn (Panthers) Vontae Davis (Colts) There's a long list of CBs most of whom will wind up being available at: http://nfltraderumors.co/2014-nfl-free-agents/
Yep, this. He was on NFL network saying how much he wanted to play for the Jets and hoped to retire as a Jet. The only way he doesn't come back is if our CB core has a complete overhaul
I still have faith in Cromartie,He had a bad season he played with an injured hip ,I could see him having a chip on his shoulder and turning everything around next season
Safteys have to be great tacklers and very physical players,Cro is not one of those guys he kinda is but not really
I'm fully expecting Vontae to re-sign with Indy but Verner could be had for big money. Something similar to what we originally signed Cromartie to. He's worth it though he's a very good cover corner and very young.
Everyone called the Giants stupid on their way to the superbowl when they drafted DL year after year after year. BPA is proven to be successful. Reaching based on need is proven to be a recipe for disaster. Did you want Sheldon Richardson in the 1st last year?
There is a nice supply of FA corners, which i think will ultimately drive down the price on them. That said, Verner might be the premier one available. I could see him getting 8 or 9 mil per year, with lots of guarantees. Still, that would be like trading Cro for Verner straight up, which is a good move at this point. I'll note though, that if Cro is healthy, i think he's actually better than Verner in man to man. Verner is only 5'10" 180something lbs, and the Titans were even experimenting with him at FS, as they were worried about his press coverage. He proved this season he can be an effective starting CB, is 5 years younger than Cro, and i don't know how/if Cro will rebound from injury. Add it all up, and seems like a good swap if we can pull it off.
On the surface, in terms of pure ability, age and health, I agree that trading Cro for Verner would be a no-brainer kind of move. I have no idea how popular or unpopular Cro may be in the locker room or if he is one of the team leaders. If so, the costs might be close to the benefits. He says he wants to retire a Jet. I think that needs to be taken into consideration. I don't think that should be too big a consideration, but do think it needs to be factored into the decision. I guess it would depend on how much Verner would want to sign with the Jets, how much the Jets think Cro has left in his tank and how cheaply Cro is willing to re-up for, who else in FA the Jets are very interested in signing, and if the difference between Verner and Cro's salaries would prevent their signing another FA or two that they really want to sign. If Cro can recover from his injury and return to 2012 form, it would be a nice story and good for continuity and chemistry for him to return, but at this point, I think the team needs to focus more on getting better rather than "nice stories."
It's a layered decision no doubt. I'd love to have Cro back if he can rebound to form. The big challenge i see, is what is the appropriate value to pay him. I don't know the extent of the hip problems, and he is getting a bit older. If they take the chance on him returning, and he would agree to a deal in the 3 mil range, it could pay off for us. I would still try to sign one of the lesser expensive CB's in that scenario though. Someone maybe like Shields, if he could be had in the 5 mil range. Our secondary has to improve from last year. I doubt we re-sign Wilson after the season, and Cro is a big question mark. As it is, we have to bank on Milliner playing a lot better, which i hope for, but is not certain.
I agree that determining what he has left in his tank and then finding the right value will be tough. I think it will be one of Idzik's key off season decisions. If they have any interest in retaining him at all, they'll probably let him hit the market and see what, if anything other teams offer, especially since he's acknowledged that he needs to take a pay cut and wants to retire a Jet. Coming off his poor season, with his checkered history of performance, his lack of physicality, and at his age, he might not get any offers or might only get very low offers. Even if the Jets could re-sign him for only $2 million or less, it just might not be worth it over paying Shields something like $4-6 million a year (or whatever). Interesting idea about re-signing Cro and then adding Shields. I think re-signing Cro then adding Sam Shields would be a tough sell to the fans and Woody, however. You then have three starting caliber CBs, and only 2 starting spots. Who's gonna ride the bench? I guess you might say they could bench Wilson, and play either Shields or Milliner in his spot, but Wilson has been a good slot corner, and we don't know how the others would perform in that role, or if they'd even be willing to. We know that Cro isn't suited for playing the slot. He can't cover shorter, quicker receivers very well. Also, in having that many starting CBs, the Jets would have no leverage if they tried to trade Wilson, and would have too many cap $s tied up in the CB position again. I wouldn't be in favor of that at all. I think the choice has to be between Cro and signing a Shields, Verner or Munnerlyn, not both.
cromartie isnt a great player and isnt worth half of what he is due to be payed. cutting him is a no brainer. if he wants to come back at 5-6m per year fine, if not there are better options. we should go after talib
I guess if Cro is re-signed, you are right in the expectation would be he starts along side Milliner. A guy like Shields would then be too expensive as a slot CB, future starter on the outside, and 2014 depth for the outside. In my scenario though, with big assumptions on the cost of these 2 guys, the cap tied to CB position would be no higher than 2013 was (and is very reasonable). My big concern... Nothing can sink a season like lack of depth/talent at QB (obviously), OT, or CB. It's too easy for opponents to exploit weaknesses in those positions. Our CB's were abused this season, and I'm wary entering 2014 with the same 2 out there. I think we have to let Cro see what his value is on the market, and that might take time. We cannot watch the other young FA's get signed up, while waiting on Cro to come to the realization he isn't worth anything near what he once was. Based on this, I'm leaning toward signing a top FA CB, and letting Cro walk unless he signs back with us at a very reduced amount at some later point..
I Love 'Cro....Dude really stepped up last year and he's a STUD when healthy...Hopefully he and the Jets can come to agreement this off-season. I'd love Cro to retire a Jet. Any way we could get Robert Turbin from Seattle? LOL That'd be awesome...HE IS A BEAST HB...(totally unrelated & random I know
By the way, if we want to sign a playmaker at corner, forget the dude from the Titans...I would LOVE Captain Munnerlynn from Carolina, he's a beast and a HUGE playmaker and solid tackler...He'll be very expensive though.(IF we let Cro go, I'd hope to sign Captain & Brent Grimes from Miami(just mainly for his size & experience.
I totally agree that we need better play and depth at CB in 2014. I also totally agree that the Jets can't afford to sit around waiting to find out what Cro is worth and let the other guys get signed. That's what is gonna make it so tough for Idzik. I think he has to pretty much make up his mind before releasing Cro whether he's going to definitely re-sign him and count on him, or if he's gonna hope to replace him and only re-sign him as a Plan B in case he can't sign one of the other guys. While it's nice to have a guy who wants to remain a Jet for the rest of his career, the first and foremost priority has got to be getting a certain level of play from the CBs. Milliner should take a big step forward next season. I agree that Jets should look to replace Cro in the starting lineup. I wonder if he would be amenable to being re-signed and having to compete for the starting spot. If he would, and be willing to be a backup if he loses the competition, then that might be a great plan. If Idzik is going to be true to the competition Mantra, then Milliner and Cro should have to compete for the starting spots. If the competition is going to be legitimate, then the Jets either need to sign a quality FA or draft a CB fairly high (2nd or 3rd round).
