Kerley is a good WR, if you're worried about him being the #3 or #4 you could make his deal a 3 year or at least a "we'll never see year 4 of this" deal. Paying Kerley too much to be a #3 or #4 for a few years isn't a terrible problem to have. Not many teams have a #3 WR with that talent let alone a #4.
The problem with your logic is that it is based upon Kerley's current production. When we have better options at # 1 WR and TE, less balls will go to Kerley. I agree we should try to resign him before he hits free agency but I would wait until half way through the season to see how he gels with our other targets and whoever wins the QB job.
I'm thinking Wilks contract is tied directly to his defensive compatriots. he may not make a great deal (10 mill or more) since the jets and Mo know theres more to worry about down the line, namely Coples,Davis, Snacks and probably Allen next year. that along with the fact that most 3-4 DE's aren't making that much annually suggests to me they'll hit a 7-8 mil a year deal, maybe slightly less at times. Its cool to have this many great younger players possibly developing for the D and should be interesting to see what moves they make to keep their core together over the next two years.
My logic is based on his talent, not his production. It's easy to see he's a good NFL receiver. That won't change if we suddenly have 2 better NFL WR's. And if we did have 2 better WR's I'd be estatic.
It doesn't matter if he's the third receiver and less balls go his way. I think he will be productive but either way injuries happen and for us, WR injuries happen far too often. Kerley is tough, reliable and talented. I want him on this team, period.
say kerley got a $9 million 3 year deal, with 3 million guaranteed and an increasing annual salary (2 million, 3 million, 4 million) would that be acceptable for the jets seek for him or realistic for Kerely to want? I think it is, seeing as how the rookie WR the jets are likely to attain will make less for those 3 years, and theres no guaranteed money in that last year so theres very little risk, hell if he proves to be the safety value to geno or another QB he's been the past two years it could be a steal. I'm thinking something like this should be done after the draft however, a veteran WR signing could define what the details of something like this would be.
Kerley reminds me of Cotchery and Powell reminds me of Leon Washington. Two above average players that every team needs when the tough catch or run is needed. Obviously they're not stars and shouldn't be paid as such, but both should sign extensions without the bank being broke to retain them. They both are seemingly low-maintenance, team-first guys as well...
elite #3's, good #2's, lackluster #1 type players right? too good to just let go unless something obviously better comes along... but then that might cost more... hmm.... While I'm at it Powell is harder to determine, while its likely that only one WR will make more than Kerely and a rookie, both RB's besides BP (Ivory and Goodson) are making about 2 million the next two years. unless he stepped up as THE premier back, which despite starting at times he hasn't done, he's not likely gonna make more than that. he may have to prove himself mid season more than kerley does despite bringing similar value to his position becuas eof this. I mean do the jets give him the same 2 million they're giving the other guys? more? why not give that to them?
Agree with PennyRoyal, I make the same comparisons. They have value and should be part of the team if the cost is economic IMO.
