Exactly. That's why I think it would be nuts to give him a lot of money. There are too many players in the league who only care about the $s and/or fame, and don't care if they win, don't care if they maximize their talent, etc. Those players don't deserve big money, but all too often some team is willing to give it to them. I hope Idzik won't be one of those GMs that overpays guys like Nicks. If he could get Nicks to sign a "show me" type contract with most of the money tied up in incentives, where the value of the contract would accelerate each year based on the number of games he played, catches he has, TDs, and yet takes into consideration dropped passes and penalties too, I'd be ok with signing him.

I think the $ vs the impact he'd have is worth it. He's not going to break the bank.

I'd give him an incentive laden contract.

For some reason I have a feeling 1 or 2 teams will.

The only thing that really makes it plausible is that his value is probably at its lowest. He's had his injuries, but the WR core could definitely use a guy like him. If he comes cheap, it may be a no brainer. We could still draft and sign another TE or WR and possibly still afford him.

I see us dumping Holmes and signing Nicks.

The Jets dont need any more malcontents in the WR core. Sign Tate and Maclin and draft an up and comer in the 3rd or 4th round.

    Jets 2014 WR's: Tate/Maclin/Kerley/Nelson/Draftee

Don't be mislead by age. Nicks at 25 his a lot of mileage on his NFL odometer. Although he hasn't missed a ton of games, he has played hurt a lot and his injurie have been leg ailments. NFL WR's can lose their explosiveness quickly (Edwards, Holmes) and then get by from a fan perception standpoint on name recognition.

Nicks is an "old 25" who may have already slowed down from a seperation/explosiveness standpoint.

I would prefer Tate and drafting a strong #1 WR of the future in round #1 this year (trading up if need by adding our extra 3rd round pick to do so).

NO way to Nicks... I'm not huge on Tate, but I would love to see Maclin on the Jets, along with a WR and TE 3 pick combo in the draft.

If he comes cheap and he's healthy Idzik will be interested. In some quarters (like the Patriots for example) you don't spend big money on wide receivers because there are millions of them who can be productive in most NFL systems. Even some of the guys we signed during the season like Greg Salas and Nelson when given a chance made plays. I'm not for spending double digits for Wrs. I'd rather put the money into adding dept on the lines.

I'm sorry but this seems so backwards. Bring in average talent to play with a below average QB?

How about finding an actual QB to play QB?

You bring in average talent to find out if Smith actually is below average. If his play improves substantially next year, then he isn't that bad after all.

You can't really get a first round QB because the good ones will be gone by the 18th selection, and we can't give up all those picks to trade up. If we did, and the new QB didn't succeed despite having nobody to throw to, then the new HC after Rex got fired would want his own QB, but we would have no first round pick to use to draft him or trade up from. We'd be screwed.

It makes sense to take a mediocre QB from free agency or someone decent like Kyle Orton if we could get him for a 3rd or 4th, and start whichever of him or Geno Smith looks better. Then you make a big effort to get at least a mediocre receiving corps.

Now, if Smith or Orton or Vick or whoever leads the Jets to the playoffs, we can build off of that and further improve the receiving corps in 2015. If it doesn't work out that way, then Rex Ryan gets fired and the new HC can draft his own QB in 2015, and at least the receiving corps should be decent enough that he won't have terrible receivers obscuring our judgment of his rookie season.

  14. I think you guys are crazy for wanting to pass on Nicks if the price is right.

Nobody is saying he's the savior to the Jets offensive woes but he can certainly be part of the solution.

You sign him & say Eric Decker, this team doesn't even have to worry about drafting a WR(Unless its clear BPA) until round 4 the earliest.

Nicks is probably the best of a very poor FA WR class. Could be a bargain coming off a bad year. Talent's still there.

Decker is a product of Manning I think he has bust written all over him without a well established QB and a few solid WR to take most of the load.

Nicks yes if the price is right sure that price for me would be 3 years 9 to 12 mil MAX pretty sure some team will throw 30 mil his way. lets hope it ain't the Jets

For the right price, I'd take him.

For me, I wanted Maclin, but looking at Nicks' stats, the talent is undeniable. He still put up 800+ yards with a Giants team playing poorly.

Either of the two will do for me, although I am leaving towards Nicks a little more now.

Edit: Yeah, I just watched some videos of both, and I'm definitely leaning more and more for Nicks. He just seems more like a #1 receiver. Fights for the ball, and could get YAC. Maclin isn't anywhere near as physical as Nicks.

I'd like to see one of Nicks or Maclin signed on a small, show-me type of contract.

IMO it would only be worth it if he actually produces. I definitely think an incentive-laden deal is the way to go. It will be interesting to see if Idzik has any interest in him, and if so, how much Nicks will want, and if he will be willing to accept an incentive-laden deal.
