One thing I will say about this organization and Geno Smith is that they let it fly, for better or worse. I'm not sure if what they think about him going forward, but at least they have a sample from which to evaluate from. They didn't handcuff him and he didn't handcuff himself. Maybe that cost them a playoff berth - who knows? but at least we saw the highs/lows the good/bad of Geno Smith... I got thinking about this in comparison to E.J. Manuel in Buffalo. They put shackles on that kid... or maybe he did it to himself by playing conservatively and getting hurt. Either way we know a HELL of a lot more about Geno Smith after year 1 then they do about E.J. Manuel. Considering neither team finished with a playoff berth - I'd take our situation over that.
I agree we saw more of Geno than the Bills did of EJ and that's a positive for judging what we have but a lot of what we saw of Geno wasn't particularly good. As far as stats are concerned EJ definitely has the edge including one less TD pass in 6 fewer games, higher completion percentage (by 3% so not exactly a massive difference) and better QBR. Things like TDs, TOs and yards are hard to compare based on his time lost but using an "on pace" method (which I acknowledge is not completely accurate) he would have had more yards, TDs and fewer TOs. Using the same "on pace" concept Geno would have finished with more rushing yards and TDs. Plus you have to factor in the receiving corps that Geno was working with vs EJ who obviously had a stronger group to work with. Honestly it's hard to compare the two and I'm sure Geno lovers will say Geno should get the edge and Geno haters or Bills fans will say EJ gets the edge.
the encouraging thing is that geno plays MUCH better at home then on the road. thats a rookie thing that can be cleaned up with just more expiereince. the numnbers are night and day. not that he was great at home, but he was significantly better and we were 6-2 in those games because he was much better
This had to be done and the fact that they did it leaves the Jets with many options headed into the off-season. They can build around Geno and see if that works. They can bring in major competition and see what that does. They need to bring in a decent vet backup if they choose option one. The Jets probably go 6-10 this year if they put the cuffs on Geno or roll with somebody else. There was no talent on offense and only the fact that Geno could improvise for points now and then kept them somewhat competitive.
please stop, w/ a better QB we are playing this weekend w/o a doubt. Geno killed our season BUT he ended up playing well and gives us hope for the future. if we sacrificed 2013 for the future it may have been worth it(we'll see) but spare me the notion that he won us games and w/o him we wouldn't have won 6. w/ competent QB play the majority of the year we win 10.
I love him, the kid's going to be a great addition and one that I think will show even more when paired with a solid TE and true #1 receiver.
Something like that. I think with the acquisitions (FAs and/or draftees) we end up making; I could see him end up being the odd man out.
I'd prefer the Jets don't model the franchise after the Buffalo fucking Bills. Nelson is a good, cheap option who has chemistry with Geno. Unless we have a massive influx of talent at the WR position I doubt he goes anywhere.
Because Buffalo is known for their stellar decision making. Say what you want about the guy but the fact is he was our only productive wideout next to Kearly who's had his share of injuries this past season. Kearly & Nelson are the only locks at the WR position
UDFA who rips up a knee is often a cut after the season. The team has nothing invested in him and as cruel as it sounds it is the smarter move to let them go. If you have no talent at the position maybe you maintain them but otherwise you can usually do better by proactively replacing them during the period they are on IR.
Actually while as everyone knows Buffalo has its problems, from what I saw of them this year they have a better group of wideouts than in years past.
Who would have thunk that it would be Blocker that sees my point? With the quality of WRs that will be available in FA and the draft, I can see a scenario where Nelson is not on the 53 man roster next year. This should not take away anything he did this year; he's been a pleasant surprise. It does not mean that I think he sucks or that the Bills are a model organization. The simple minded black and white mentality of this board is ridiculous...smh.
They did a complete revamp of their WR corps which included letting go of Donald Jones. I suspect we will be doing something similar.
the secondBuffalo game this past season was quite revealing. They have their problems, but the Bills now have developing talent at wideout. If Manuel works out they will be more challenging than they were for most of the least ten or twelve years.
You are right there i a good chance that Nelson is not on the roster next year. If we pickup a FA WR and draft a WR we end up with the FA as the number 1, Kerley as the 3, Hill and the draft pick competing for the 2 and 4 spot. Which leaves Gates,Nelson, Salas and everyone else competing for the 5th and possible last spot. In this scenario Salsa or Gates could easily beat out Nelson for the last WR spot. Although with so many young and unproven WRs its quite possible we go with 6 WRs next year. especially when one considers the injury history of our Wrs. Hill, Kerley, Gates, Nelson, and Salas all have significant injury histories. Looking back at last year I do not think Holmes, hill and Kerley had more than 2 combined healthy games last year. Kerley with 2 concussions and the elbow. Holmes never fully healthy, and Hill with an assortment of injuries all year long.
