I think Herm did not have to be paid off because he hopped right onto the KC red/yellow bandwagon
Like I previously said, I'm glad that they are going to re-up him. What are your thoughts on the extension? Or...are you just a troll?
I'm glad that they extended him. He took a team that was put down as 32nd in the NFL by the so called experts and put us in mid table. He did this with a rookie Q/B and numerous injuries and a new O/C, which always creates problems in any team. Idzik now has his own draft team in place this year and I feel that we will have a good draft and that with good use of our cap space we will push on over the next few seasons to greater things.
The Jets definitely outperformed expectations this year and the coach should get the credit for that. I know they had a rookie QB, new OC, etc, but I would still be concerned if I were a Jets fan about the offensive production of this team. They need to add talent and bring out a new scheme in 2014 if they hope to be competitive. I'm not sure Rex adds enough value to get that done, no matter the offensive acquisitions.
I think that all Jets fans were more than a little concerned about the offensive production during the first half of the season. We seemed to be far too pass orientated with little playing to our strengths on the run. This seemed to change over the last few games with the ground 'n' pound game being re-established. I can only assume that words were exchanged between H/C and O/C. I also think that things have improved dramatically now that Geno has been told to use his speed a little more and not just stand in the pocket until he gets hit! Jets fans have to be optimists or else we would all jump off high buildings to our doom! Things can and will get better next season.
Am I the only one who thinks a TWO YEAR extension makes the most sense? Enough time to see where Smith goes and how a couple of FA and draft cycles work out, but not enough for anybody to get too comfortable.
Ahh I was in jest (hence the winky face), your response is kind of serious haha I don't really think your team is crumbling. Oh they definitely need to upgrade their offensive talent, but that was a known problem all year. With a ton of cap room and draft picks, the Jets have the resources to improve, it's now on Idzik to wisely use those resources to help improve the Jets. Tanny dug us into a hole where we couldn't realistically make big changes from 2012-2013. So Idizik had to be conservative and I think, hopefully, Geno/Winters/TBO are going to be reliable starters next year out of the draft. I don't think they need a new scheme. I think MM will be able to improve the offense and stay with the WC style with Geno and new weapons. The problem with the offense was lack of playmakers, they had nobody who could create a big play, big plays had to come from either a) broken plays b) perfect design and execution. Nobody could break the top on a D or just catch a slant and turn it into a 50 yard TD. Hoepfully, they get healthy and find a playmaker or two in the draft+FA. This is a big, important time for the Jets is this offseason. It's make or break for filling up the team with talent. It's going to be exciting time for Jets fans because this year had a bleak outlook and while I enjoyed this year hoping we could sneak into the playoffs, I always had one eye on next year/down the road because this year was supposed to be a wash.
The fact that he took a rookie QB that was up and down all year and pretty much a very re-modeled team overall and made 8-8 makes me want to gag as to why people need to feel Rex has to prove himself again. What Bull$it !! For Rex to go thru another season of 'lame duck/hot seat' second guessing by the fans and media, why even bother? If I were Rex I'd be shopping around...
Ugh...I wasn't signed in so the winky face came across as a hyperlink...I assumed (incorrectly) that it was a link to Gronk partying...... I think the ground and pound was better in a lower scoring era, but to be able to beat teams like the Broncos in the new pass happy league you need to be able to score. The ground and pound can work, but I think it puts too much pressure on your defense. Like you said, the Jets lack big play weapons, which doesn't allow them to execute much else but the heavy run attack. This year was better than expected for the Jets and it's possible that they could grow on it next year. I just don't think it will be enough to win it all, and isn't that what it's about?
why would you extend him? what advantage is that to the team financially or competitively? id rather have rex coaching for his job again
You're right, I do feel that he has already proven himself, but again, you have to look at it from a GM perspective. 8-8 is nothing to write home about. I'd rather wait until Rex has us superbowl bound or at least a division title before getting that big extension. 12 wins next year or deep playoff run seals it, IMO. Rex doesn't care what media / fans say about the alleged "lame duck" status. I knew from the beginning of the season this was never the case, it was just media clowns blowing things out of proportion. That's not reality, that's sensationalism to sell papers. The sheep follow it, but anybody that knows football and pays attention knew Rex was staying unless we had a disaster season (4-5 wins).
Jets, Jets Who cares if the coach gets an extension? He has plenty of money and will work hard regardless. If the Jets make the playoffs he will be rewarded. He makes more money than most of us on this board. Why should we care?
They had Kerley, ivory, who was an upgrade over Greene, and offensive line that was better than last years, David Nelson was better than Clyde gates and Chaz Schillens. Cumberland was better than Reuland, Powell improved on last year, Winslow was also a good surprise apart from the 4 games that he served, and Geno improved his completion percentage to a respectable 66.8% This offense was better than the one that MS played behind last year, I'm not saying it was all pro, but it was better. And don't forget MM, big improvement over TS.
Extending Rex for one year basically resets the situation to 2013 all over again. This makes sense for all involved. Rex will not be a lame duck, which is a good thing in and of itself. If the Jets make the play-offs and end the season with the arrow pointing up, the implication is that he will be paid off with a lucrative extension. At that point, why would you want to get rid of the most successful coach, statistically, that the Jets ever had. And there's no reason Idzik would not be on board with that. If the Jets flop, Rex will not survive. Many of his supporters will jump off the bandwagon, since, after all, he will have missed the play-offs 4 straight years. Even if Idzik adds his pieces and they don't pan out, it will be a much better for Woody & Idzik, public-relations wise, to let Rex go next season, assuming 2014 does not meet expectations. If Rex meets the challenge of coaching for his career and the Jets do well next season, he'll be here for at least the next three-four seasons. If a miracle occurs and the win a VLT in the next three years, Rex'll be elevated to Joe Namath/Mark Messier status in NY sports annals. If he doesn't, Rex will end up on his feet. He will get another HC job
I agree about MM being a big improvement as well as Ivory and Powell. Cumberland and Kerley were already on the team, Winslow was decent but far from great. Ican't honestly say he was an improvement over Dustin Keller. Maybe about the same. Winters was not an immediate upgrade over Slauson OR Moore either, he barely beat out Ducasse for the job. I don't think the oline was better at all. Geno Smith was tied for the 5th most sacked QB in the NFL this year at 43 sacks and Simms got sacked 4 times. Last year Mark Sanchez was 11th at 34 sacks. Yeah some sacks were the QB's fault and not the line but same is true for Sanchez. Also you have to look at QB hits. Year - sack-hits 2011 - 40 - 70 2012 - 47 - 76 2013 - 47 - 97 To put this in perspective, the 2011 oline was the one with Wayne Hunter, the turnstile. Perhaps he was better than we give him credit for? The only argument you can make about the oline is that they did well in the run blocking, however a large portion of our run game was Ivory breaking tackles and making big plays, not really because of the line, although they did make plenty of good blocks over the year. I'd say the run blocking was about the same level as last year, so when you take into account the bad pass protection numbers, it looks more like the line got worse (which you kind of expect when you have to start a rookie at guard for most of the year after losing 2 starters). Colon was an improvement, but he was a penalty machine at times. Not sure if he was better than Slauson or Moore. Last year's team had 4 pro bowlers. This year's team had zero. Our talent level dropped over all, especially losing Revis & Laron Landry and replacing them with rookies and 2nd year guys. Holmes didn't do all that much this year. Nelson was a good pick up, and definitely an upgrade over Schillens (who isn't?), but Hill pretty much did nothing. Maybe the WR core was slightly better, but they were injured on and off all year. I firmly believe the Jets have accomplished more with less this year and large part of it is coaching, but the improved run game definitely helped. Both years we were hurt by injuries. We were also like the 7th youngest team in the NFL based on starters. Imagine if MM got a chance to work with this offense at full strength. It didn't happen for a single game this year. Goodson, Winslow, Cumberland, Kerley, Holmes, and Hill all missed significant time. If we had all of our pieces in play most of the year, I might concede the talent argument, but it's hard to judge due to injuries / suspensions. Based on that, MM & Rex Ryan did an outstanding job and did indeed over achieve.
I also think a one year extension makes the most sense. Among other things I don't know how you would value Rex's second year in a two or more year extension based on what we know today. If the Jets make the playoffs in 2014, then that's one thing. If they don't, that's another. If they don't he should not be brought back for 2015, so given that reality, what number would you give him for his second year? I would even go so far as to say Rex himself might be better off negotiating a new contract this time next year, since if they do make the playoffs in 2014, he will be in a better position than now. A one year extension is a compromise, which is appropriate in this situation.
I think this is Woody going to the GM and saying,"let's load up the offense and make a run in 2014. If Rex doesn't deliver with all the weapons in place then he's a goner in 2015" No way you're telling me the Jet's think Rex is the future of this team with just a one year extension, and rightly so. They're as sure about Rex as they are about Geno being the future.
