It's Amaro, not me. Amaro runs extremely well for a big Guy, those kind of players are rare. Amaro would be used as a weapon, receiver in the NFL, Ebron would be a more conventional TE. Both are good players but come from different systems.
It's important not to get caught in a baskets trap when you're evaluating people for the offense. If Amaro is a complete prospect at TE, a guy who can handle both the blocking and the pass-catching aspects of the role, then he's a no-brainer as an addition in the latter part of the 1st round. On the other hand if he's a WR in TE's clothing then you really don't want to take him up high as a TE. You're not going to get what you need out of him if he can't block well in the NFL. All the talk about great receiving prospect who forces mismatches doesn't mean as much if that's all he brings to the table. At that point he's just a bigger slower possession receiver. He's got to be able to fit in all the baskets the Jets use a TE in for him to be real value in the 1st round.
I just want to clarify my stance on Amaro. I never said Amaro couldn't block, I never said he wasn't a complete TE. I did say he's a receiving TE. His strength is his receiving game and he should be utilized and play wide at times, not like most conventional TEs. Amaro isn't slow, he's probably as fast as a lot WRs and will be one of the fastest TEs in the NFL. What makes Amaro successful is his quickness for a man his size. The key to Amaro's game is creating mismatches against slower, less athletic LBs and smaller DBs. Brdyway...I just don't blow smoke to talk, I study players as much as anyone, so you're not telling me anything new.
I know you look at everything. I just don't want the Jets to be limited by their personnel because they took a guy in the 1st round who had one thing handled and wasn't good enough across the board. Ivory, Powell and whoever else is running the ball for the Jets next year need TE's capable of blocking against a DE or LB as well as TE's that create mismatches against LB's and smaller DB's. It's tempting to look at Amaro and see him as one of the great two-way TE prospects of recent years. The problem is that most of those guys did not get taken in the 1st round and most of them were clearly two-way guys. Don't win the last war, fight the next one.
sign me up for amaro. dont matter to me about the blocking. if u can land a guy with his current ability and potential in the NFL passing game, u do it. oh and just so no one thinks i am stroking WW - dont like the punter in Rd 7. to each's own but i cannot validate taking a non-position player during the current 7 round system. just cant do it. there are too many examples of teams signing these guys off the street, coming in, and being very effective.
Jets could double dip and grab Amaro and C.J. Fiedorowicz from Iowa - he's the best blocking TE prospect. You look at what the Patriots (Hernandez / Gronk) and Ravens (Pitta / Dickson) have done via draft for TEs in the past, and I don't see why the Jets can't do the same with 2 3rd rounders. A lot of these TEs are lining up as wide receivers and are making a hell of an impact - Jimmy Graham spends over 50% of this snaps as a WR - which is why if he gets franchised it could be as a WR
I agree. I need to see more of him. I watched the bowl game last night and that was the first time I'd seen him. He's certainly big and has very good hands. I didn't see the smoothness that some have talked about regarding him. I definitely want to see more of his play, but at this point, I'd much prefer Ebron over Amaro. The only knock on Ebron is that he isn't always focused and drops some easy passes. That's easily fixed. He's more athletic, smooth, and a better all-around TE imo.
The best TE prospect that can come in and immediately help the JETS in the run and split out wide is Arthur Lynch from Georgia. He is 6'5 255 and is just a bull in the run game when he blocks. He should be available in the late third to early fourth round.
Not a fan of this draft at all outside of the Amaro pick. Love Amaro selection and right now he would be just below Watkins and Evans on my wish list. The rest of the draft I would be extremely disappointed in and would seriously question Idziks ability as a GM if draft went this way. We still would have the glaring need for a #1 WR type. I like Cook and I can get on board drafting him if we drafted one of the other 10 or so 1st-2nd rd WR talents available in addition. Yes I know we have some holes on D but that is on the back burner until we can get some serious upgrades to offense. I will be very disappointed if at least 3 of first 4 picks don't go to offense. This WR class is very deep, there will be some serious talent floating around in 3rd rd.
Appreciate your comments. While doing the first Rd, I made the picks for the previous 17 teams and Watkins, Evans and Ebron were all off the board. I went with Amaro over Lee. Evans & Ebron would have been my choices over Amaro. I took the potential elite TE, knowing I had other WR options in rd 2, with such a strong group. The quality of TE's drops significantly after the top 3. If you like Amaro and want a #1 WR it wouldn't happen in anyone's mock draft. Watkins, Evans, Lee & maybe Benjamin, if he declares, are IMO the only true #1 potential Wide outs available. The term #1 wideout is somewhat of a fuzzy tag given by NFL fans, most Teams don't have an Elite #1 WR that deserve that distinction. Remember, I mentioned we will probably address WR in Free Agency...Jeremy Maclin a possible option. Brandin Cooks isn't a mediocre player, doesn't have the ideal size but plays bigger and has all the tools to be an excellent NFL WR. Cooks might be the best second tier wide out available, in fact, after the combine he could slip into the end of Rd 1. Amaro & Cooks would increase the productivity of our Offense. I still addressed some key defensive postions...OLB, S, & CB depth, Cro's status could be questionable.
Great thread and discussion. Watched Amaro last night and he is very impressive. He finds spots to get open and is very aware of the first down marker. My worry, and this could be just based on this game as a sample, was the athleticism - he doesnt feel like a Graham or V Davis in terms of separation and instead seems to rely on using his body to get separation and tremendous hands to bring stuff down. I could see him being dominant speedwise against big 12 comp, but will he be able to perform that way against nfl comp? (his blocking looked fine if not outstanding to me)
I'm glad to see that you like Hakim Smith. I've been very impressed by him in the games I've seen. I'm curious what you think of his teammate and fellow S Pryor. At least one site I read had him rated much higher than Smith, but hasn't he been injured? I don't recall seeing him play that much recently, and earlier in the year I was focusing primarily on Teddy, not Louisville's D. I hadn't seen Muema before their bowl game, and he knocked my socks off. He'd be a very nice addition in the 6th round.
Trade up to #13 and take mike evans. Our #18 and #68 (from Tampa) should get it done. R1 (from St. Louis) - WR Mike Evans R2 - S Ahmad Dixon R3 - ILB Chris Borland R4 - CB Chris Davis R4 (comp) - T Seantel Henderson R5 - Trade for future 4th round pick R6 - OLB Jordan Tripp R7 - RB Jerome Smith
agree. and this is exactly why he is one of the guys i hope we dont take. It doesnt create as many mismatches with him at TE if teams just play him like a WR and bring in personel to treat it as such. its a different story if he was a guy who could excel blocking and get down field just as well out of a down stance
i dont think the gronk/hernandez comparison is a good one. both of those guys where dynamic receivers and they could both block. in hernandez case - block extremely well. pitta dickson might be a better comparison. and i wouldnt call that duo dynamic
Aaron Hernandez is / was a shitty blocker, I don't know what you are watching. Ebron is a far better blocker at this stage then Hernandez. Do not sleep on Fiedorowicz's ability to catch the football neither, he isn't on the level of Gronk or Hernandez but he can catch the football. Fiedorowicz is a vicious blocker as well. Ebron / Fiedorowicz I believe has a much higher upside then Pitta / Dickson. btw I was not comparing their skill-set - I mentioning the fact that good teams do indeed double dip on TEs. Good teams. You could argue Ebron / Fiedorowicz has a better chance of being a better blocking duo then any of the other two.
