Do you have season tickets? If you don't sit in the stadium, you have no idea if Smith can read defenses or not.

That's all you can ask for really. Let's add some weapons and see what Geno does.

Improvement near the tail end of the season is good to see... Surround Geno with players please.

If the man had success with Bailey, Austin, Wood at college then we know playmakers will elevate his game

His footwork is bad I'll give you that. That comes with repetition on top of the fact that the guy probably didn't get too many reps in training camp with the preseason injury/splitting with Sanchez.

Inaccurate? The guy throws the ball on a frozen rope right to the spot. The ball sails on him some which comes from the poor footwork, but that has less to do with accuracy and more to do with poor protection for a lot of the year.

How do you know how well he can read defenses? Do you watch the game tape after?

A bunch of blind statements because the guy turns the ball over a lot. That automatically makes him inept at doing everything.

Been a Jets fan since back in the Pennington days (only 25 years old, so I haven't lived through the Jets up and down past forever).

Just to be completely honest, I'm done being a Jets fan if we do NOT give Geno another shot next year. Unless we somehow trick someone into giving up a 1st and 2nd rounder for him, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Name the 4 Quarterbacks this year with 3,000 + pass yards and 350+ rushing yards....

Now tell me their surrounding cast....

    Yeah...

We're seriously screwing up the future if we don't give Geno another shot, sure, bring in a competent backup (not Cutler, etc. - maybe a Schaub). Surround him with some talent and protection (when he has time - he's good). If not - we're pretending we don't have other GLARING needs aside from QB.

No chance in hell would we ever get 1st or 2nd rounder for him, let alone probably find someone who wants him in a trade.

Geno should be named the starter, and give him weapons to work/grow with.

You just haven't been around this board long enough. All anybody talks about is the QB. It's as if there were not 44 other players in uniform. It gets maddening.

hes not going anywhere. there are still questions, he isn't for sure our next long term solution but he's a big part of next years plan.

hes earned that much, he ain't no Jimmy Clausen. (hell if we're lucky he'll be nick Foles)

His inaccuracy also stems from his poor anticipation. He tend to wait for WRs to get open as oppose to throwing them open. That can and likely should get better with time. His footwork though is an abomination and his mechanics are very inconsistent.

There's a lot to work on over the spring and summer. Now the Jets and Geno have a lot of tape of him playing in the NFL to work with. That should make a big difference in terms of correcting problems.

The deep drops are a real problem. Geno still doesn't know where to set up when he's dropping back and there's pressure on him. A lot of the time the answer is to step up and make a quick read and likely throw it away but Geno still tends to retreat and give ground and ultimately make the same decision from 10-15 yards deeper than he ought to be at the decision point.

That's just one example of something the Jets and Geno can work on. There are many more.

NOBODY should be NAMED the starter, not Brady, not Unitas. Every year must be a competition. The best I'd give him is "it's his job to lose."

ok his job to lose. but he needs every snap he can get. no splitting snaps competition that is just going to prolong his growth or the evidence that he won't be the guy.

Geno comes into next season with a leg up but in no way shape or form is he the starter going into camp.

They need to either bring in a proven veteran or resign Sanchez. They can't go into the year with a lot of new pieces with Geno and a career backup that hasn't started a game in 5 years.

Eh, not sold on Smith at this point but have seen enough to give him a shot next year.

His rookie campaign wasn't good overall but he finished strong.

And for all the Sanchez Supporters.
Smith won one less game with a much worse team than Sanchez had his rookie season.
He threw one more pick on 50+ more attempts.
Fumbled the ball less. Scored more TD's (rushing and passing combined)
In other words he was basically even with Sanchez's performance his rookie season.

not a glowing endorsement, but just like what I said with Sanchez after 09...he's got a lot to improve on but he's a rookie, let's see where it goes next season.

    re-sign*

But no, I don't think we need to re-sign Sanchez at all, especially without a total restructure of his contract.

Geno can have some competition but I think he deserves the starting job given a good training camp and progressive off-season. He should be the Qb for at least the next year, IMO.

I mean this isn't a huge deal, but after this weeks game, Geno Smith just became the first quarterback in Jets history to throw for 3000 yards in his rookie year. He deserves a chance to show progress in the regular season IMO.

I agree that there should not be a competition. I would've been okay with a competition had Geno stunk in the last 4 weeks. However it is imperative that they bring in a competent backup QB ala Kyle Orton or Shaun Hill or Jason Campbell etc. So that way if (god forbid) Geno gets hurt, or Geno struggles we have a guy that can come in and run the offense.

Geno Smith with Jeremy Kerley in the lineup:
    8-4 record
    211 comp/ 353 att. (59.8%)
    2,573 passing yards (214.4 ypg)
12 passing TD, 6 rushing TD (he was held TD-less in all 4 without Kerley)
    18 total TD -12 interceptions
    passer rating of 79.4

Jeremy Kerley is a solid player, but the fact that his presence was so game changing for Geno shows the ridiculous lack of talent on the roster. Geno was held win-less and touchdown-less in all 4 games without #11. With all the cap space we have and the draft coming up, I'm excited about what this kid can do with a viable supporting cast.

Also, I'm really curious to see how the season would've unfolded if Kerley didn't go down.

Add in a stud TE like Ebron (please!) and an OT like Lewan or Henderson and maybe our O is set for the year?
