I get killed for this every time but here goes: Idzik will use his #1 overall on defense. Why? Because he doesn't have Tom Brady under center. His ONLY shot of being competitive is to give Ryan the one or two missing pieces to complete his NFL dominating, #1 overall, defense. After working with Rex Ryan for the last 10 months, Idzik is a believer. He's seen it in person. Idzik believes that given one or two remaining top players, Ryan will deliver a suffocation defense that gives Idzik's offense (Geno) the best possible chance to win. Rex will pull hard for a #1 Free Safety and another DB. Rex needs his own 22 yr old Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu in the middle of his backfield. And I think Idzik will give it to him if there's one available at our #1 pick. No rookie WR or TE will put 10-14 pts on the board every game the way a suffocating defense can keep 10-14 pts OFF the board every game. Of course, we need help on offense and it will come. But a complete Rex Ryan defense that holds teams to 16-18 pts/game will make any offense look good. #1 pick: defense
I think a true number 1 or 2 WR drafted with our first rounder can make a bigger impact than any defender. Our D is already good. Theres not as much room for improvement. On offense there is so much room for improvement. Look at how much better the O looks when Kerley is healthy. Add another legitimate WR threat or even TE and our O can definitely start scoring a TD more per game.
Except that we're tied with four or five other teams, some in the other conference. It's pretty hard to have a one-size fits all tiebreaker that includes head-to-head.
Some of what they draft is going to depend on what's available in FA. If they can fill the #1 receiver in FA then they can afford to use the first-rounder on either defense or the offensive line perhaps. Conversely if they can't fill the #1 receiver void in FA (there are only limited options - maybe Decker and James Jones?) but they do soup up the D in FA it would be irresponsible not to use the draft to beef up the O.
If that's all Rex needs is a 1st round pick at every position on defense then we don't need Rex. Still, wouldn't shock me if they did go CB or DL in the first.
That's bullshit. The Jets were the best under Rex Ryan when they had a well-balanced team. That well-balanced team led us to 11 wins.
everyone keeps talking about WR and I don't mean in the 1st round but somewhere, somehow we need a true #1 rb. Powell is a decent substitute/3rd stringer and I am not sold on Ivory, he had a very bad year IMO even if he did come close to 1000 yards, he was only effective in a few games all season long. I'm not sure what free agent rb are available
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umDr0mPuyQc NO. Tanny isn't our GM anymore. No more moving up and sacrificing depth. This team needs to build toward being a contender. It doesn't need anymore foolish trade-ups, especially when it's not even at the Qb position.
The Jets, as a team, had the 3rd most rushing yards in the NFL this season. http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...SHING&conference=ALL&d-447263-s=RUSHING_YARDS I don't think we need a premier running back; at least I don't think we need to draft one as a top pick. Ivory + Powell (+Goodson, possibly) have shown they can be successful. If we improve our passing game, they will only improve (play action, less men in the box, etc.)
I'd be okay with drafting defense under two conditions. 1. We address the WR/TE positions through free agency 2. It better be a FS or an OLB.
Upgrade at RB would be nice, but upgrades at WR are a must. If we don't have two new starting WRs next year, this offseason was a failure, full stop.
I'm okay with this as well, but there is no eligible FS worth a 1st round pick this year, IMO. I don't want an OLB simply because I think the need is not as significant as it has been in the past.
Your thought process is why this team is one of the worst offenses in football now for 5 years. This is no longer a league where you dominate just by defense. The teams with great defenses still have to score points and those teams have playmakers on offense as well. This team has no playmakers on offense. It would be utterly stupid if we dont start drafting or picking up some really good talent on offense. No matter how good your defense is, you arent going to hold the upper tier offenses to under 17 points on a regular basis.
I think we need to address OLB in this years draft. It's not a glaring need NOW. But it can be in the near future. We have Antwan Barnes, Calvin Pace, Quinton Coples, and McIntyre. We need another blue chip player at that position that can develop for a year as a pass rush specialist (in McIntyre's spot) so when we get rid of Pace in the offseason of '15 we'd have a guy that's been in the system and can step in to a starting spot.
bpa regardless of position. the only position that is set is dt and maybe lt and c. other than that every other position could be upgraded. even if that means drafting a guy who might sit behind brick or nick for a year or 2 or adding another disruptive force on the dl i want to see offensive payers brought in too, but reaching in the 1st is not the way to go about it.
I agree 100% I'm just not sure if we should use our 1st round pick on the position (and defense, in general) this year. If the BPA is an OLB, I would be fine with taking one; as of today, however, there are much more glaring needs.
