The offense sucks lol, I really don't know what else to tell you about that one. I don't see it as an excuse - I want them to be in the best position to succeed that is all. I've seen development this year - I just want to continue that to happen. A new system could hinder that.

Jim Schwartz is a player's coach - yet I don't see them playing hard for him or making statements for him to stay.

Motivation again can only get you so far on the football field. You need talent also. Rex didn't do his best job in that Buffalo Game, but I won't fire him because of that game alone.

They were also very talented. I think you need leadership at both the coaching level and at the player's level you know? That guy on the field - Russel Wilson and Pete Carroll come to mind.

I want our players to focus on improving - not to learn a whole new approach. I don't think it is best for their development - but we will see from Idzik's decision. We should be a playoff team next season if we keep this CS intact.

Yes indeed, I respect peoples' opinions on this board - you have yours I have mine - nothing wrong with that. At least tomorrow is Friday

Why would anyone want an 'offensive minded HC' when the Jets don't have an offense?

I am not changing my argument, I still believe Roman is a fraud. I like to read fan's opinions because they are no different then us. Combine that with articles I have read and I do not believe he is the answer here.

Regarding the bold part - it's not because of that - I just do not believe in what he does. His name doesn't bring me any excitement. Now David Shaw? That guy he is something special I believe. I don't want to fire Rex for just anyone.

    Jets, Jets

The Jets need better players especially on offense. Idzik will get them in time. He also needs a head coach. An NFL head coach needs to coach the coaches, motivate the players and deal with the media. Rex seems to want to be a D-coordinator not a head coach. If he wants to continue with the Jets he must convince Idzik that the has grown into a head coach and is willing to act like one. He has to get involved with all areas of the game and supervise the whole operation. If he agrees to do that he can get another year.

Anybody think that maybe Woody and Idzik made the decision to get rid of Rex a long time ago, just waiting till the end of the season?

Let's just hope that Rex is right about something for once.

If they made up their mind already, they should have done it last offseason to make it a clean move. Now they messed up a firing if they actually do it which is incredibly silly.

Rex has outperformed anything this team should have done this season. The team is playing hard, guys are improving - Milliner has actually looked good the last 2 weeks, Geno has looked better, the DL is plays balls out...i see nothing wrong with bringin back a coach that can deliver a solid defense and a unified team for 17 weeks.

Let MM work with the offense, bring in some skill players, and see what happens, but getting rid of Rex is a mistake this team will regret for many years.

On the first point, we are in total agreement. The offense sucks and needs to continue to improve. I also agree that a new system could hinder that development/improvement. If Idzik does fire Rex, we'll just have to hope that he's smart enough to hire a coach that will run the WCO, regardless if he decides to keep MM and Lee or not. Hopefully, he'd want to keep one or both, but if not, at least the basic offensive system and plays shouldn't change dramatically, and any adjustment would hopefully be minimal.

I don't know anything at all about Schwartz, except he seemed to be doing a good job his first year or two, but things have really gone South. I also don't know how likeable a guy he is. Rex is a very likeable guy, the kind most would enjoy having a beer with. I understand totally why players and so many fans would be so loyal to him. I actually hate it, that I think he needs to go. I love the fact that his dad was a DC with the Jets and that Rex really wanted to be here. If he is kept on for another season or extended for a year or two, I won't be horribly upset, but I do think it would be a mistake. That said, I would root for him to succeed. If he can learn, change and develop, it would be in the Jets best interest to keep him and the present CS, I'm just not convinced he can.

I also agree that motivation alone isn't enough, that talent is needed. Buffalo isn't the only game where the team was flat, didn't compete or was unprepared. I think that's a big indictment of Rex as a HC, but wouldn't fire him for that alone, either.

I also agree that a team needs leaders on the field as well as from the CS. I think they're developing some young leaders on the field and that's encouraging. I'm just not convinced about Rex's leadership abilities.

I don't want our players to have to learn a whole new approach either. IMO, that's been the biggest problem in Jets' history aside from having clueless owners who made terrible hires to begin with. It's one thing to fire a HC, but quite another to hire the new HC with total disregard as to what offensive and defensive systems he will employ, and continually be changing those systems, and as a result, frequently churning the roster as well. There are a lot of WCO disciples out there. There are also a lot of 3-4 devotees. If Rex is fired, there is absolutely no reason why one or both systems should have to change.

If Rex is fired, and the CS is as good as some (many?) Jets fans think it is, unless the "new" HC already has a group of friends that he could assemble into his staff immediately, I see no reason why some of the better parts of the staff (Dunbar, Lee, and perhaps MM) couldn't/wouldn't be retained by the new HC unless there is some kind of major philosophical difference or a personality conflict.

Thanks for the civil exchange of ideas. I enjoyed it. Go Jets!

Um, maybe to help build/develop one?

I don't. After the Saints game, Woody and Idzik sounded like they were hinting that he was going to be extended, talking about how great he is. If they decided to fire him, it was within the last 3 or so weeks.

Idzik is probably leaning towards firing him, but we straight-up don't know what Woody thinks. Idzik might not know either. In that case, he would be foolish not to do some due diligence by figuring out a game plan for the head coach hiring frenzy. You have to have all that figured out before you fire the coach, since Black Monday is a huge frenzy of activity in every front office that has fired or lost its GM.

Woody Johnson was right there in the post-game speech, clearly visible in the video that his media employees released, looking happy- so it's entirely possible that Woody still supports Rex and wants him back. On the other hand, if he truly has given most of the authority to Idzik, then that won't matter. Or if Woody got demoralized by Rex's team doing poorly late in the season (as has often happened), maybe he decided to fire him then.

It's probably just about a 50/50 proposition, I don't think it's a slam dunk in either direction by any stretch. But personally, I think that looking at how much he's done with such an underpowered roster with such poor QB play, you ought to give him the chance to show what he can do with a rejuvenated roster in 2014. If he can get it to a 10 win or playoff team, then you know the Jets are on their way back, and poised to get even better in 2015.

If he doesn't improve in 2014, maybe you look in another direction. By 2015, Geno Smith will have had 2 years on the team, and if he hasn't improved in his second year, you can feel justified in drafting a new QB for your new HC in 2015. If you fire Rex now, the new HC is not going to be excited about Geno Smith with all of his interceptions and relatively few TDs in comparison, so he may pressure Idzik into drafting another early round QB, when we really need receivers and can't really afford to draft another QB in the first two rounds.

Firing Rex in 2013 does not make much sense, given that this was a bad rebuilding team and realistically, they had almost no chance of making the playoffs. If they get to 8 wins, that'll be pretty miraculous considering the level of QB play and the fact that this easily could have been a 4 win team.

OK. Let's say Rex gets a 1 year extension. What standard will he be held to?

    Second round of the playoffs?

    Make the playoffs?

8-8 (or 9-7) because that would be an improvement?

Record doesn't matter became he is a great coach and never gets good players, OC is crappy, too many injuries, QB sucks, etc.?

There are a lot of ways to look at that proposition and I'm not sure any of them really cover the big picture.

I think probably Rex gets held to the "how did the team play in 2014?" standard.

Did the offense finally show signs of life after 3 years of dysfunction?

If yes then you probably want to keep Marty M around and that argues against a coaching change.

Did the defense improve year over year instead of the slight regression that has been happening recently as the talent declined a bit each year?

If yes and question one was yes also then you probably want to keep Rex around to build on those events.

Did the Jets play a consistent season that was not marred by bad losing jags, particularly in December?

That would be another factor to consider.

Realistically if all of the above were true the Jets win 9 or 10 games and make the playoffs which resolves another question mark.

On the other hand, let's say the Jets make the playoffs with 9 wins and the offense is not consistent and the defense wasn't a huge strength and the Jets had a major losing streak during the season, particularly after the bye.

Do Woody Johnson and John Idzik still decide to keep Rex around just because the team edged into the playoffs narrowly while not resolving many of the primary issues that have plagued them over the last few years?

How did the clubhouse act all season? Was the team together? Were there issues that popped up like in 2011?

    It's complicated.

The Jets could be a very good 8-8 next year with signs clearly pointing towards a bright horizon or they could be a kind of iffy 9-7 with the storm clouds still scattered all over the place.

I think it's pretty clear that another record below .500 would likely be a place where the franchise moved on for better or worse.

If REX stays and doesn't make the playoffs even if his record is 9-7 he will be fired for sure.10-11 wins and playoff berth is what it would take

I'd hold him to the standard of double-digit regular season wins, or a playoff appearance. But I'd also take injuries and circumstances into account - 8 or 9 wins could possibly be enough depending on the circumstances (i.e. losing multiple of our best young players for most of the season. I do not even want to think about that.)

It's not that "Rex always has bad players" and that if he loses it's their fault, and if he wins, it's because Rex is a genius. No. You have to look at how the overall quality of the players has deteriorated because of bad decisions by Tannenbaum. The Sanchez extension, and other big mistakes doomed the Jets in 2012, and the terms of the contract made it so that you couldn't really cut Sanchez and get cap relief until after 2014. In 2013, you could only improve through the draft, but there were so many holes that that wasn't enough. It was a situation where you have to make do with whatever guys get cut from other teams (Nelson, Sudfeld, safeties from the freakin' Jaguars and Titans) and have those guys who are not good enough to be backup players actually start for your team. It's a situation where you have no choice but to compete with fringe NFL talent and somehow not be that 4 win team everyone says you should be. Rex did that. This was as much success as you could realistically hope for with this roster.

2014 will be a different story. We will have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds, something like 11 or 12 picks total, and $40m in cap space without having to cut anyone we actually need. That will be the chance to inject a LOT of talent into the team, and the Jets should not have tons of glaring weaknesses that you have to try to coach around as best you can. This will be a situation where the Jets should have a good chance at making the playoffs.

A 10 win season or getting the a wildcard would mean I'd automatically keep Rex. The point of 2014, I think, would be to see if the team has gone from "on the upswing" to being a team that has the potential to make the playoffs pretty regularly. A playoff appearance or a 10 win season gives you confidence that the rebuild has been successful, and that's really what I want to see out of 2014.

Now by all means, I expect Rex to be trying to win it all if he makes the playoffs. But this is a team that has been talent-starved for years, so it's not a situation where losing in the wildcard or divisional round would mean he's failed at all.

In 2014, if the Jets make it to the playoffs they will be going in as the underdogs literally the entire way though, just as it was in 2009 and 2010. It's going to be uphill the whole way, and you just hope that you can be one of those underdog teams that gets hot at the right time and wins the Super Bowl. For next year, just making the playoffs or getting double-digit wins would show that Rex has successfully led the team out of the dark ages of 2011-13.

they aren't giving Rex a one year extension. if they are unsure about him and only want him another year to evaluate him, he is as much a lame duck with another year on his contract as if he just coached out this contract. Woody isn't going to pay him an extra year for the perception that he is going to be around longer when it would be clear to anyone with a brain that he is just as likely to be fired after the season as he would be to simply not be given a new contract.

a one year contract serves zero purpose.

and the lame duck concern is equally unimportant. players won't sign with the Jets because they are afraid Rex will get fired (meaning it is important to them to play for Rex) but will sign with the Jets if they fire Rex and hire a new coach just because he has a longer contract (which would mean that playing for Rex is unimportant so they may sign with the Jets anyways and not care if he is around after the season)? the reasoning contradicts one another.

beyond that, if a player wants to play for the Jets and Rex they know that all they have to do is win and he will continue to be the coach, so they won't care whether he is coaching out his contract because they will know that he will get a new one based on performance.

He won't get fired. If there is one thing the Jet organization has been great at over the years, it's rewarding mediocrity. Accounts for their phenomenal success.
