Ryan won a SB ring as a line coach. It is not that big of a deal. A coach did something when he wins a ring as a coordinator or a head coach.

Ryan prior to taking the Jets job had a resume that was not too different from the resumes of these other guys who have been mentioned in this thread.

Green bay is effectively having the same problem as us in reverse, McCarthy is an offensive coach and that defense is putrid. I firmly believe that if Rex even had a Matt Stafford kind of QB we would be in contention every year. Rex is not an evaluator of offensive talent and as such the front office needs to take a little blame for not bringing in the proper scouts to mask Rex's deficiency. Not all good head coaches are also good talent evaluators. Those type of coaches are a rare bunch such as Bill Belichick.

What makes you think he's a good coach? The 49ers offense this season has regressed. They average only 168 yards-per-game, the lowest in the league. Their completion rate of 56.3 percent ranks 30th out of 32. So how is Greg Roman a good coach? Kaepernick has regressed as well.

How does bringing in ANOTHER defensive coach increase the productivity of the offense and special teams? It is about having a competent coaching staff. We have just that. You fire Rex, you get rid of an excellent offensive coordinator in Marty and a QB coach in David Lee who has helped Geno develop and actually play better the last 3 weeks.

I think the majority here would be very angry to fire Rex and bring in another defensive minded HC.

This team has improved and it is much better than last year's team.

What makes anyone think Rex is a good coach? The team's defensive ranking in both yards and points has gone up every year.

SF actually has averaged more points this year per game then last year and the will have at least 11 wins for the second consecutive year. The 49ers have never regressed in points per game rank since he became their OC.

He might suck but at least he is part of a team putting up more then 10 wins in consecutive seasons and he's facing much tougher competition.

While I'd certainly prefer an offensive guy signed as the new HC, there's no guarantee he'd be any better than Rex as a HC. The idea is to bring someone in who will be an effective leader, will have a basic understanding of all the units, will hire a good CS and then hold both them and the players accountable for the team's performance. I don't want the same problem here, just in reverse with having a great offense and a bad defense. I want both units to be good. One of the Harbaughs was a STs coach. He certainly has been a very good, very effective HC. It isn't just about what unit the new HC comes from, it's about his basic understanding and abilities as a HC, not as a unit coordinator.

Yes, if Rex is fired, MM, Dunbar, Lee and the rest could be gone. While I think it certainly is a better CS than they've had during Rex's tenure, I don't by any means think that it is a great unit. It's good. That doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. Besides, the new HC could be given the option of retaining any of the present CS he wants. Just because we get a new HC doesn't automatically mean that the whole CS will leave.

I don't think Woody and Idzik should be concerned about Jets fans being angry if Ryan is fired. Fans have a limited knowledge and understanding of things. I don't mean any disrespect to any fan here or elsewhere, but I also could care less if fans will be upset if Rex is fired. I can understand your being upset, but I want what's best for the team. I don't think Rex is, but if Idzik and Woody determine that he is, I hope they'll be proven right. If they decide he isn't, then again, I hope they'll be proven right. I just think we've seen enough of Rex's flaws and shortcomings to know that he isn't going to change significantly, and that means he isn't what the Jets need in order to win a SB. Perhaps with a different roster or owner here he could, but you can say that about many HCs or potential HCs.

The bottom line is that imo Rex's lack of discipline and holding CS and players accountable is the very worst type of HC any team could have with a young team. They need to be shaped and groomed in the correct way (to play smart, tough, not beat themselves, to show up and produce, to be disciplined).

We have gone up in yards because the defense is ALWAYS out there, look at the possessions. We have had bad QBs play for the Jets that constantly turn the ball over.

Rex is a good coach because we have had success under his tenure. More success then any of the other coaches we've had since 1998. When this team has had talent we have been successful. That to me is a good coach. The defensive line is the strongest link of the team - and we are a FS away from being a REALLY good defense. Marty is a good play-caller the Jets haven't had in a long time. Get some weapons on the outside and we can be a dangerous offense.

Those #s offensively for the 49ers are skewed. Their offense hasn't performed against good teams, they stat-padded on the worst teams in Jaguars (42), Texans (34), Packers (34), 34 (Falcons). When has the offense showed up against a good team? 7 Points on the Colts when the Rams put up 40. 9 on the Panthers when we put up 20. Btw the Packers are not a bad team, but their defense is.

#s aren't everything buddy. Kaepernick has regressed. Crabtree / Boldin and Vernon Davis and they still rank pretty bad.

I want no part of Greg Roman.

Rex isn't an effective leader? How many coaches go into Foxboro and beat the Patriots in a playoff game? Rex can motivate his team and that is an obvious fact. Harbaugh is an excellent coach - but I do not see a Harbaugh level coach available. I think Rex has helped the offense, in a sense of understanding blitzes - the offensive line has played much better the past few weeks. People think Rex does nothing to help the offense, sure he isn't a QB guru - but to think he does nothing to help is bullshit.

You have no idea how good this CS can be because it's only been together one freaking year with no talent on offense. Give Marty some talent and we will be putting up points. Marty's history proves just that.

The italicized part is funny - this CS will be gutted and gone unless Woody makes them stay and I doubt that will happen. HCs want their own coaching staff. This is a pipe dream at best.

It is Idzik's choice to fire Rex, if he does he better have a great coach that can continue to develop this defense that doesn't run a true 3-4 / 4-3, AND develop the offense and that coach better lead this team to the playoffs or a 9 win record - if this team takes a step back, Idzik needs be out the door. Right now this team is on the rise - there's no reason to take a step back at this juncture. Get talent on offense and we will win 10 or so games and be in the playoffs.

Not every coach is perfect - show me a coach and I will point out their flaws. He holds players accountable, how many times has Millner been benched? Geno been benched? That is such bullshit.

Jet fans always think firing someone will make the team better.

Herm Edwards was successful when this team had talent.

Rex is a good coach. The league is full of good coaches. We have a great HC in our division. Good isn't going to cut it. I don't have anything invested in Roman. This is about Idzik. If he's a great GM he will get a great HC. If he isn't the Jets aren't going anywhere with Rex or anyone else.

Herm was a good motivator - that was about it. Rex is a better motivator and Xs and Os guy.

Idzik will have a lot on the line if we suffer with a new HC - his ass will be out the door right away if he fires Rex and we take a step back - we should not be taking a step back.

Rex has potential to be great - I believe he is getting better each year.

This league is not full of good coaches - look at the teams that lose year in and year out with good talent. Case and point the Lions coach. Top 15 QB, Top 1 WR, amazing D-Line - can't beat the wack ass Giants. Can't win a division HANDED to him.

Rex is special - now is not the time to let him go. If we suck next season fair let him go.

Imagine the continuity we would have acquired by now if we'd have just kept Herm? Off the charts!

Herm left to go to KC
    We didn't fire him

I believe we got a draft pick which turned into Leon Washington IIRC

We traded him. Leon is long gone, but the continuity would still be here.

I have read quite a few times in this thread that Rex is a good motivator.
That is one of the most ridiculous statements I have read on these boards in long time.

Team was real motivated coming off the bye losing 37 -14 when they were 5-4 and in the hunt, or the following weeks scoring 3 points each against teams completing with them for the wildcard.
The looked real motivated losing 49-9 to the Bengals after beating the Patriots or 38 -13 to Tennessee.

I am not saying that we should have won all or any of those games because our talent level sucks, but if you want to claim Rex is a good motivator he would get his team to show up and put up a fight on a consistent basis, but well too often we have gotten blown out under his watch.

The second hysterical thing is that he holds players accountable. Sanchez through his tenure was really held accountable. The incredible and ongoing amount of pre-snap penalties reeks of holding players accountable.

    Rex is a joke.

Rex was only the D-Line coach when the Ravens won the SB. He was even passed over for DC when Lewis took the Bengals job for Nolan before he finally got the job after him.

He did a nice job as the DC of a stacked D. But they had their best years before he became the DC there.

Why didn't you just quote me? It's obvious who you are calling out - don't be a pussy

Motivation from coaches can only get you so far, if you don't have talent to put up points then what good is motivation from the coaches? Jets don't have a player that can evaluate the players around them like a Russel Wilson or Andrew Luck. This Jets offense isn't good by any means - sometimes players with amazing talent and leadership skills have to put the coaching staff on it's back and deliver big plays that the CS can't draw up. Sometimes that leader that player on the field has to motivate their teammates to step up.

Who is that on the Jets squad? No one. Rex can motivate his players that is fact. Only Rex haters would dispute that. Rex doesn't throw the footballs into double coverage, fumble balls or throw a pass 10 yards past a receiver. He can't go on the field and do what only players can do.

We won games because of our coaching - but again coaching can only get you so far w/out talent - Got to love Rex haters and their illogical reason.

I'm sorry but this is a terrible post. It's like you have something against the guy or something.

You are wrong in painting the picture of an offense that can't perform against good teams. Last year their offense went from 11th in total offense in the regular season to number 1 in the playoffs. What better sign that they were up to the challenge of a good team than that?

Your numbers are only looking at this year alone anyway. It's no secret they started off slow this year. Considering they've won 10 of their last 12 games - averaging 28ppg in that stretch, I'd say that Roman has fixed any issues this offense had.

I prefer to look at the guy's entire body of work rather than pinpointing a few, and they are a few, of the bumps in the road along the way. This is an OC that took a guy like Alex Smith (who was largely proclaimed a bust) and revived his career. This would be like transforming Mark Sanchez into quality NFL starter as they were on similar paths prior to his and harbaugh's arrival.. but he didn't stop there, grooming a raw 2nd round QB into a top QB in this league..hmm.

49ers fans complain about Roman because they think he's too conservative. But what they don't realize is that he's playing to his strengths. If they were out there with a different style they might be quite turnover prone. It's just a case "the grass not being greener on the other side".. They can gladly try our offense on for size if they want. Give'em a couple weeks and they'll be begging for Roman's return.

Not to mention - it's not just about the guy's abilities as a OC. We aren't hiring an OC. Presumably, we'd be hiring a HC. Roman has the characteristics of a good all around HC. Flexibility, playing to your strengths, hiding your weaknesses, and creativity are a lot of what he's shown to be his tendencies. Not to mention he's learned from the best young HC in the league in Harbaugh. He's not a guy that thrived on one system or one QB. He's had success in changing systems, adapting and again- with 2 unique QBs.

So stop with the Roman bashing. If you don't want to see Rex fired, that's fine, but don't be silly and nit-pick a potential replacement while you brush away actual critiques of Ryan.

Uh yeah he's not head coach material. I'm 100% sure Jim Harbaugh was responsible for Alex Smith's resurgence.

Here's some information regarding your boy Greg Roman.

    http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2012/12/inside-the-49ers/49ers-offense-not-really-greg-romans/

Do you really want him as a head coach? He's responsible only for the running game. His responsibility may have increased this year and that responsibility hasn't made Kaepernick a better QB.

You saying Roman was responsible for Alex Smith's resurgence is funny as fuck though and discredits your post 100%. Alex Smith doesn't credit Greg Roman he gave credit to Harbaugh.

Roman is a fraud and I want nothing to do with him - and his fans cannot stand him.

I am very aware of Rex's faults btw - Like I said no coach is perfect in the NFL - Rex has to get better as a head coach and I believe he is doing just that

If you are going to list a replacement - then I recommend you come correct. And your post was far from it. I know a few coaches that would be a great replacement for Rex if Rex were to fail next year - but I am not going to replace him with someone with a lower ceiling that only runs the running game LOL.

I guess you are one of those fire a HC every 3 years type of guy. Good for you!
