We didn't do a good job, I would say more of a mediocre job. The project picks in the 2nd round didn't do the Jets any justice - when they drafted a QB at 5, they didn't acquire young weapons to allow this offense to grow over time. How many WRs / TEs has this team drafted over the past 6 or 7 years?
No more of this, you either give the extension of 1 or 2 years, or you fire him. You don't keep him as a lame duck status. That is a distraction to the team.
Sorry but I do know how an organization is run, pretty certain a lot more than you do. Gruden inherited a good team without a top tier QB and won. Billick inherited a top tier D with no QB and won. Belechick inherited a so-so team with Drew Bledsoe and won. Payton had a hand in the rebuild brought in Brees and won. Rex has had 5 seasons to put his stamp on this team, he has without a doubt had a hand in the neglect of offensive talent brought into the team. Is it all on him, no, Mike T. already took his fall last year, bottom line is that Rex should have gone with him. Keeping a HC while firing the GM is always a mistake, as is firing a HC and keeping the OC was with Brian S.
Gruden inherited an all time D and a very underrated QB Billick inherited an all time D and a very underrated QB Belichick was on the verge of being fired before the best QB of this generation took over and led them to a SB Payton got Brees in his prime rex had success early then as we started getting older/not replacing talent he lost more but despite the issues he's had us in the playoff race in December the last 2 years which is amazing considering the healthy talent we had.
It's a business - certain people have certain responsibilities. It's really not that hard to grasp. Gruden won because he knew the previous organization top to bottom. That doesn't make him a good coach. To me he is overrated. He couldn't build that offense which is he well known for Billick - had a HOF defense, and you know what his forte was? Offense. Ravens offense didn't do jack shit the entire year. Also, Ozzie Newsome is a GREAT general manager. Belicheck - Exception to the rule. One of the greatest minds in NFL history. You don't see many coaches like him in the NFL they come around very rarely. Sean Payton - Acquired Drew Brees, good FO in Mickey Loomis. Amazing offensive philopshophy. But the opportunistic defense got them to the SB. Sean Payton doesn't coach the defense. We need a plan, a good GM that sticks to his plan (I hope Idzik is the guy) and we need to draft good players that can contribute. Saints drafted Colston and Reggie Bush and they both were instrumental in the SB run. It's not just the coach, everything else needs to be in place as well. The Jets biggest issue has been the inept ability to find good players late in the draft, and the inept ability to have a long-term plan in place to contend. We have the coaching in place, we need to get better talent around them, mold them to play our style of football and we will see a change. If the draft goes well this year, we will make the playoffs next season
It's been worse in the past I agree, but a lot of the players we acquire via draft are no longer here. 2009, 2010 We could have done MUCH better.
IMHO Rex has this thought in his head get a lead & then play holy hell D & walk away with the game. Naturally in the normal course of events that is very unlikely to happen but because RR cannot see the forest from the trees he sticks to what he THINKs will get us to the SB which is why he spends most of the money & choices on the D then the O since he wants to have the D paid & screw the O which is why we have NOBODY on O including a franchise QB
If Rex wasn't his plan, then he should have fired Rex last year. Or if the coach was forced on Idzik, he should not have taken the job in the first place.
I'm reading Collision Low Crossers: A Year Inside the Turbulent World of NFL Football. The Jets really screwed up during free agency period before the 2011 season. They got greedy and tried to sign Nnamdi Asomugha and while they were waiting for him to make his decision, several key Jet players signed with other teams. Then they had to overpay Cromartie. Also, the head coach, Rex, worked closely with Tannenbaum in making all personnel decisions. Of course, Tannenbaum made the final decisions. If you are involved in this board, the book is a MUST READ. It's really interesting!
I never pinned that directly on Rex. I never even mentioned his name in the post. I was just saying that the offense has been neglected when compared to the defense and thats a large reason to why we cant even get Carson Palmer-like play.
EXACTLY. Can Rex develop a QB though? He hasnt been able to so far. The fact that the QB position is so important is the main reason why Id prefer an offensive minded coach through this rebuild.
I have confidence Idzik can find those pieces again with input from MM and Rex. If Rex is still running our draft, why would Idzik take this job, a job he has no control over? It's Idzik's draft and he defers to the coaches every single time, that's his fault. The GMs job is to take input form the coaches and scouts and all resources, then make his decision. Eh we didn't do too well in the draft and then we also missed in FA and overpaid the wrong people. It's been average so far, although the recent Wilk and Richardson picks are looking really really good. Since 2000, I will label it year. round so 2000.1 would be 1st round of 2000. WR: 2000.3 Lavernus Coles 2000.5 Windrell Hayes 2001.1 Santana Moss 2004.4 Cotchery 2005.7 Harry williams 2006.4 Brad Smith 2007.7 Chansi Stuckey 2008.6 Marcus Henry 2011.5 Kerley 2011.7 Scotty McKnight 2012.2 Stephen Hill 2012.7 Jordan White In 2009 we traded draft picks for Braylon Edwards. In 2010 we traded draft picks for Santonio Holmes. In 2012, we traded up for Stephen Hill. TE: 2000.1 Anthony Becht 2002.3 Chris Baker 2005.6 Joel Dressen 2006.5 Jason Pociask 2008.1 Dustin Keller 2010. UDFA Cumberland
GM jobs dont pop up very often. Idzik has a much longer leash than Rex at this point and can call the shots now.
rex ryan is a one trick pony at this point. and the worst part is he knows it and doesnt even seem to care. i have absolutely no faith that he can help rebuild the offense and his silly things like playing a qb in the second half of a game he wasnt supposed to play in so he could show the front office he was right is the type of stuff that i think has already cost him his job.
In regards to laxin's first post, just wanted to say I don't think we'll need to replace Mangold that soon.
Rex isn't the guy to lead the rebuild of this offense. at this point, it's safe to assume that the offense will always struggle in a Rex Ryan team. The offense we have now didn't occur overnight. It took years of neglect and poor development. This offense is basically back at square 1, and some of you want the guy that created this mess to be a part of it's rebuild? No way. The QB position: Many Rex supporters say "Get this man a QB and he will win" but when you say that you are completely ignoring the fact that this man has mis-managed the QB position worse than any coach in the league... that his QBs have not shown ANY progress in his time here and that his teams haven't shown the ability to even mask a QBs weaknesses.. So- short of signing a Peyton Manning or someone who would succeed no matter the circumstances, Rex's teams will always have QB troubles. But put a Peyton Manning caliber QB on a team and virtually EVERY coach would win.. so what the hell are you saying about Rex? I think Rex Ryan in general is not built for long-term success as a HC. That's not to say he can't win a SB or anything, just that you will not have long-term success with him because of his failings on the offensive side of the ball. For example -If he went to a team like Detroit, with loads of talent on offense and struggles on D, he could have lots of success right away. He would change the culture there and improve their defense. They would probably make the playoffs and be a tough out when they get there. But slowly after a time there, Detroit would probably start to look a lot like the Jets. Stafford wouldn't develop or take the next step. As soon as players like Bush and Calvin Johnson age out the team would probably start losing games A LOT like our current Jets. This isn't necessarily a knock on Rex. it's just taking a look at the big picture and seeing his role. He could have a lot of success bouncing from team to team and building up their D in the short term - as either HC or DC like his brother and father.. but he is not built to be a long term HC and definitely not the guy to lead a team in need of an offensive rebuild.
Our O's were pretty good the first 3 years, only bad the last 2 due to many circumstances beyond the control of Rex.
Our offense was capable in 2010. I just wanted to look this up for myself- 2009- YPG: 20th 2010- YPG: 11th 2011- YPG: 25th 2012- YPG: 30th 2013- YPG: 27th That is not "pretty good" in Rex's first 3 years. Like I said, 2010 we had a capable offense- but that was filled with aging vets on their way out (Woody, LT, Richardson), our players that had their contracts up (Holmes, Edwards)- an offense that could not be sustained. Also, the Sparano hire is almost all on Rex. From the minute he was hired, Rex raved about both of them having the same mentality and he was "Rex's guy". Yeah, Sparano led to the downfall of your favorite QB. Santonio Holmes was also one of Rex's guys that needed to be retained. He was signed at market value and he has really affected the outcome of the last 2 years- both salary cap implications and his on field play (or lack thereof).
