It's hard to find a franchise QB. That's just a fact. If it wasn't hard then most teams would have one and instead you have maybe 7 or 8 guys in the entire league that fit the bill. In that light is Rex's position on winning with ground and pound and a strong defense really that unreasonable? It may not work but is it unreasonable? The Jets have had only a couple (maybe) of franchise QB's in the 50+ year history of the franchise now. The Patriots are in the same position, they just happen to have one of them now. The Fins and Bills are in the same position as the Jets, looking hard and hoping they have the guy. So if you're a highly competitive coach like Rex do you come into NY saying "we're going to get our franchise QB now and then win", a prospect that is unlikely at best, or do you come into NY saying "I'm going to build a great defense and we're going to run the ball 500+ times and win that way". On the second thing at least Rex knows there's a good probability he can make the thing happen. It's not totally random and potentially heart-breaking like the franchise QB search WILL be. Rex has his flaws but he's a very smart guy and he knows football and I think he took the path with the highest chance of success and came up just short. He didn't want to be the guy sitting there waiting for a QB to finally prove out when he had the goods to try to get it done a more predictable way.
If you go back and look at the roster from 09-10 the two years we went to playoffs its night and day compared to the roster of Today. Its pathetic really
No it was the plan of management. The Jets went for it because they had a stadium to finance during a recession. The rules changed when the Union eviscerated rookies for veterans in a capped environment. The Jets were clearly going to clean the cap and collect draft choices last year and this year. That was in place before Idzik was hired.
Tell me if you wouldnt of like a few of these guys on the field this year. The Jets have a way of letting talent and depth walk away heres the list of players we let go since 2009 some needed to go most didnt Dwight Lowery James Idhedibo Shonn Greene Plaxico Burress Dustin Keller Matt Slauson Brandon Moore La Ron Landry Braylon Edwards Jericho Cotchery Brad Smith Joe Mcknight Darrele Revis Alan Faneca Steve Weatherford Leon Washington Yerimyah Bell Kerry Rhodes Damien Woody Jim Leonhard Drew Stanton And heres the list of players let go that Needed to go LT Jason Taylor Aaron Maybin Bart Scott Thomas Jones Mike Devito Eric Smith Wayne Hunter Tim Tebow Mark Brunell John Connor Greg Mclroy Jay Feely Kris Jenkins Sione Pouha Kellen Clemens Konrad Reuland Rittui Opituta Vernon Gholston Hayden Smith Derrick Mason So basiclly theres the good and bad list of players we shouldnt of gotten rid of compared to those that needed to go .I know the cap and all that but we havent had a group of guys stay together over the years zero continuity.Hopefully Holmes,Sanchez,Hill get added to the " had to go list"
You make some valid points. There's only one thing I disagree with, and that's your bolded portion. I don't think he's very smart at all. He knows football, and his defensive football IQ is pretty darned high, but if he can't understand offense after coaching against it and trying to figure out how to stop various offensive systems and alignments over the years, then even his football IQ isn't that high. Listening to him speak, and seeing some of the decisions he has made in general, I don't think he is very bright at all.
The only headline story I can think of that really pissed me off about Rex this year was the Dave 'N Buster fiasco. That was pretty stupid. After a bye week, we come out completely flat and lose a must win game that should have propelled us to playoff ambitions. Granted, Geno probably had his worst game of the season. Either way, that was plain stupid by Rex. Love the defense, afraid of what happens after Rex. That said, hate seeing Miami in playoff hunt and feel the Jets have really fallen far from grace. This was a rebuilding year before the draft back in April, I think if Rex can close out the season with a win in Miami he is definitely back; if a loss at home and than a loss in Miami.. :breakdance:
Let's see - 9-7 first season, 11-5 second, so you got me there, 2 game improvement. Same results, though. then 8-8, 6-10, and 6-8 so far this year with two gifted wins. How you see this team "improving", especially if you watch the games, is fair weather fandom at its best (or worst).
I asked this last week but got no replies - Which Pro Bowlers on other teams are no longer on the Jets because Ryan didn't want them there?
The "gifted" wins is complete bullshit statement. Look around the league for "gifted" wins and you will find crazy wins that were handed by refs on every team. Let's not forget the game was over against the Bucs until Rex calls that stupid blitz and Hill got called for BS PI on a touchdown catch. Every "W" is a legit "W" don't start trying to change value of one "W" to the next.
I hate the gifted wins line. What about the gifted losses we gave away? How about the win that was gifted to Pitt in the 2010 AFCCG when it was an incomplete pass and not a fumble?
You would be wrong. Now if you said our secondary has blown this season then you would be right. Then again when your two top corners are a struggling rookie and a cb playing threw a hip and knee injury with someone elses throw away playing safety there really wasn't much of a surprise here. Now i do blame Rex here for the over use of Cover 0 with out having the DB packages to support it anymore. Still overall our defense is built for future Dominance.
Second overall against the run? One of if not the best young line in the NFL? Beat both Brady and Brees this year with a very poor offense to back them up? Yea, nothing impressive on that side of the ball at all.
The 49ers arent anywhere near the best team in the league but all those teams have one thing in common that we dont, a top 15 or better QB. That is part of the reason they are so successful. You cant ground and pound with a garbage QB that this team keeps trotting out there year in and year out. Those one dimensional dominant teams are a thing of the past and it with the ever changing rules, it will be harder and harder for a bottom 5 QB to take their team to the big game.
They are 3rd now and dropping. There is a good reason why they are so good against the run too. Rex constantly keeps 8 men in the box and leaves his CBs out to dry. We basically flip flopped from last year. The sign of a good defense would be good in both aspects but this team cant cover anyone. The defense doesnt scare anyone anymore like it used to. Garbage QBs keep having great games this year against a Rex Ryan defense. The same defense in years past would make them look silly. Rex needs to change things up some. When is the last time a blitz got to a QB?
The 8 man boxes are more a testament to blitzing in obvious passing situations. We routinely load the field up with defensive backs and particularly earlier on in the season were making run stops essentially playing a 4-2-5 defense, with Wilk, Richardson, Harrison, Coples/Pace and the two ILB's on the field. The one thing you can hold against Rex is his stubbornness to keep Ed Reed in the lineup and insist on leaving these corners on an island. We should've been playing a lot more zone, when Cromartie's recovery speed looks like a 40 year old guy, and Milliner just looks awful in man to man.
You're absolutely right, the d-line is excellent at stopping the run. I was wrong to say there's nothing impressive about the d. But as good as the run D is, it doesn't seem to matter when teams are able to pass seemingly at will on us much of the time. Do you ever feel confident the Jets defense is going to stop the other team? What good is a great run defense if you can't stop the pass? Teams don't get bonus points for moving the ball on the ground.
Wilson and Kaepernick are top 15 guys in the context that their teams don't make them throw the ball 35+ times a game. We have no idea if those guys would still be big plusses if they were throwing the ball with the frequency that Brady and Brees and Manning do. They're kind of in the same position Roethlisberger was in his first couple of years, although he was in an even bigger rookie bubble than they were. His stats degenerated significantly when he was asked to carry the load. Still a very good QB but not the guy he looked like his first two years. I think the NFL is a bit cyclical and that the rules changes have made the cyclical nature of the league a bit more pronounced. We could easily be in a QB bubble at this point with a lot of teams trying to throw the ball 550-600 times a year to win when in fact it's just the cyclical nature of the league and a few Hall of Fame caliber QB's that have made that work.
part of the problem here is that we have lbs who are great against the run but absolutely terrible against the pass. demario davis is one of these guys, he is absolutely fantastic against the run but in coverage he is beyond bad. he is still just completely fucking lost in coverage. we have a very very good defensive line, but i am not impressed with the linebackers overall and think they are a major weakness on the team simply because they dont cover. and our secondary has fallen on its face this year. so yeah great job on the dline, how about the rest of the team.
