Rex got most of the higher draft picks on defense but his D is only average and gives up big plays on a regular basis. He doesn't know how do handle anything dealing with offense esp. management of the Qb position. One year he says he's going to be involved with the offense (as most head coaches are) and the next year he changes his mind and says he's only going to coach the D. There's been three switches on this by him in five years. In 2011 and 2012 the team lost their last 3 games and didn't make the playoffs. And won't make them this season and at best will only win eight games. So if he stays next year what's it going to be. Head coach or DC. He's lost enough games to be fired. I disagree that he's gotten the most of his talent this season. Too many mistakes on a weekly basis.
And you don't think the progression has trended downward because of a lack of talent? Look at this team compared to the teams from '09 to '11. And btw, if we win 1 of the 2 next games we've actually progressed from last yr despite a talent level that is clearly inferior.
The Jets in 2009 had 3 picks only when Rex started. They went QB, RB, OG. They didn't hit gold on QB. We swapped 1sts and 2nd (and players) for Mark. That right there why the Jets have been scrambling for the past few years. They also sent a 4th and I think and swap 3rds for Greene. In 2010, we only had 4 picks. DB, OL, RB, RB. So in the first two years, the Jets went offense on 6/7 picks in addition to trading a 5th for Santonio, and 3rd and 5th for Braylon. Cromartie was sent for a 3rd. In 2011, went Mo Wilk, Kendrick Ellis, Bilal Powell, Jeremy Kerley, Greg McElroy, Scotty McKnight. The total is now 10/13 offensive players. In 2012, the Jets went Coples, Hill (5th and 7th trade), Davis, Bush, Gannaway, R. Griffen, Antonio Allen, Jordan White. Here they went 4/8, bringing the total to 14/21 for offensive players. In 2013, Dee, Sheldon, Geno, Winters, Oday, Campbell, Tommy Bo. And traded a 4th for Ivory. 19 our of 28 picks under Rex/Tanny/Idzik have gone to offensive players. Including trading picks for Braylon, Santonio, and Ivory. Including trading up for Sanchez, Greene, and Hill. You want to see why the talent short, look how many stars come out of giving up extra draft picks. Sanchez got a big extension, hasn't shown anything since 2010/2011. Greene is gone. Hill is invisible. Santonio got big money and fell off/got injured. Braylon we had to let walk. So if the roster blame skips over the GM and goes to our HC, remember we drafted more offensive players than defensive players under him, including trading picks for two wide receivers. The problems of the roster more so fall on the GM. We spent picks on players, overpaid to keep them. We spent picks to trade up in the draft, those players didn't pan out. If you miss out on all of those, well where does the depth come from? Then the missed Gholston pick hanging over them and the one year gamble with Favre. The team was playing a game of how do we get better next year and forgetting to think about how we remain good 5 years down the road. And because of that we are where we are. I think if Rex is indeed in control of all the signings/draft, we should just call him GM and never hired Idzik. I don't think this though, hence why the GM left last year and not the HC with him or instead of him. If Idzik/Woody wants Rex gone, it better be for coaching stuff and not leftovers of Tanny's gambles that didn't pay off in the long term
Has it occurred to the Rex supporters that maybe the rest of the NFL has his number now? His blitz schemes were highly effective when he first got here and for the past 3 seasons it hasn't been nearly as effective. The 46 defense stopped working in it's first go round when teams figured out how to effectively attack it. Our run defense is pretty good. That's nice.
Bingo. People don't understand that just because the first pick of a draft is a defensive player, doesn't mean that the offensive side of the ball is being ignored. Look at how many good offensive lineman and backs come out of the mid-rounds of the draft. The general manager chose to get rid of three of Sanchez' top four targets in Cotchery, Edwards and Brad Smith, then Keller prior to this year. Why did he do this? We had to pay Revis, whether people think that's Rex's motivation or not, he was playing at a defensive player of the year level, and in order to try to fit everything under the cap, Tanny's backloaded contracts came back to bite him in the behind when he realized he was overpaying nearly everyone at the time Revis wanted an extension. Poor cap management lead to this mess, which is why we are rebuilding and weren't really expected to contend this year.
You clearly don't have a good grasp of the X's and O's of football if you think we play a 46 defense. There's obviously elements of it in terms of 3rd down blitzing schemes, but the majority of the snaps are a 3-4 defense, moreso with 4-3 elements when Coples puts his hand down on the ground. On top of the fact Rex loves to use lots of defensive backs on the field, using more of a 4-2-5 base set against pass heavy teams. Nowhere near a 46 defense, which always fields an 8 man box.
Rex uses the 46 and 46 concepts quite a bit. I'm sure with some digging I could find the center and both guards of opposing offenses covered often. It's not the base d, but we certainly use it. The point though, is that maybe coordinators know how to attack Rex and he hasn't been able to adjust.
Maybe we're watching different games, because I have almost never seen Rex line up his three defensive lineman over the three interior lineman. It'd be off tackle suicide if one of the inside backers gets picked off. Especially when there are often 5 defensive backs on the field and Rex relies on his front 6 to stop the run.
given that rex was a DC for a number of years before he became a HC wouldn't the rest of the NFL have already had his number by the time he got here if it was really that simple?
And how many times has this look been featured all year? You proved me wrong in finding them using it, but I would say we are far from a 46 defense, my man, outside of obvious passing downs when Rex dials up a blitz. It all depends on the team they're playing of course, but regardless the NFL doesn't allow teams to sit in stacked box defenses unless you're playing against someone like Geno Smith. Even still, I'd like you to tell me how teams have 'figured out' Rex's defensive concepts? Defense isn't the problem.
I think it more likely that without Revis and Cro playing badly the blitzes are a lot less effective and we haven't managed to draft or secure much of a pass rush.
They need a finisher opposite Coples.Somebody w/ some speed off the edge to compliment the Jets size/power elsewhere on D.
