I see so many posts and threads stating something along the lines of "if Rex was given the right players" or if "Rex had a QB" or "Rex has done a good job with the roster he was given" and using that as a reason to keep Rex. And it is complete bullshit and completely ignores the reality of how rosters are built in the NFL. Rex is at least 50% responsible probably more for the players on the team. This is in many ways (within cap restraints) the team makeup that Rex wants. The GM may have the "final call" but he builds the team to the blueprint that the coach sets. Pretty much 100% of the time. Rex tells Idzik the types of players he wants on defense and offense. Whay types of plays fit the systems he wants to run. He tells Idzik the VALUE of players to his team. As an example, Rex will tell Idzik that CB is more important than safety or linebacker or RECEIVER. That any defensive player is more important to his scheme than offensive playmakers. Remember Rex wants to play a game where the opponent scores less than you, not a game where you score more than the opponent. That is a huge philosophical driver for how your team is built. He will say that run blocking skill is more important than pass blocking for OL. He will say that building the defense is more important than building the offense. And then the draft board (and players they pick up in FA) are stacked according to the preferences of the head coach. That is why GMs want "their guy" because they evaluate and value talent the same way. I can guarantee that if we had an offensive minded coach, our drafting would be completely and totally different. The reality is that Rex DOES have the roster makeup that he wants. He is responsible for it. And it is obvious that the makeup of team that Rex wants is not a winning one. Anyone who thinks that the coach is not 1A in importance for selecting the players on a team is completely oblivious. The roster is not an excuse for Rex because the reality is that the roster makeup reflects the head coach and what Rex wants it to look like and the priorities for building it. He has made the bed he is lying in. The roster and all its severe shortcomings are on Rex even more than Idzik at this point.
Bet you Cleveland fans were saying the same thing in 1995. Bottom line is with a competent QB the Jets are a playoff team every year he's been here. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I can agree with this. And except for a decent QB we had the most talent of any team in the NFL in 2010. We had the number 1 defense and running game. Rex inherited a lot of talent and blew it. Time to move on. Plus look around the league. How much talent does the TB offense have? Or the Rams or Jags? They are finding ways to score points. We have the fewest offensive TDs of any team including these teams. Our offense is so poorly coached, prepared and disciplined it’s a joke. That is on Rex. Quit making excuses. He is good at defense – and not much else. Rex did a better job for us than his father but that isn’t saying much considering his father was the worst we ever had. We need a real HC.
People ignore that the defense has gone way downhill too - with his input on the roster. In 2009 the defense was awesome. In 2010 is was pretty damn good. And then it's just gone down hill ever since. There is nothing impressive about the D anymore. I'd love to have the 2009 defense every year but Rex doesn't seem capable of producing that again. I suppose we could give him another 5 years and find out. Maybe some more d-linemen and CB's would help? We don't need offense anyway since Rex is so awesome at defense once every 5 years.
I think our D has the makings of a truly dominant unit, something we haven't had under Rex. Our D may not be statistically better than last year but I think it is better than last year and probably even 2 years ago. we should be dominant up front, the LBs are good enough. We just need to address the secondary and we could finally have a truly great D.
we did not have anywhere near the most talent in the NFL, MAYBE top 10. Don't blindly follow rankings, we had similar pieces in 2008- where was the #1 D? #1 rush attack? it became that b/c of Rex.
The point was Rex did have the talent. The "if we had more talent we'd be winners" BS can be said about any coach. (Our 2010 roster was much better than our 2008 roster).
The Jets talent was good when Rex took the job but it wasn't great by any means. He had a CB and a C who were topflight and about a half dozen players who were pro bowl caliber in their up seasons. The Jets imported a bunch of over-rated players who were seen as star-caliber but weren't really at that level. You want to yell at Rex for wasting the talent he was given? Then yell at him for helping LaDainian Tomlinson resurrect his career for one more great year in 2010 and an ok one in 2011. Yell at him for watching Santonio Holmes go from over-rated to the medical list. Yell at him for watching 3 pro bowl caliber linemen leave the Jets due to age, injury or retirement. Anybody here think that Faneca, Woody or Moore would still be producing at 2009 levels if the Jets had just managed to hold onto them? Yell at him for inheriting two late prime OLB's and helping one of them have a big up-season this year at the age of 33. Yell at him for having a prima donna CB who wouldn't take $12M a year to be a Jet for life even though he wasn't ever going to be as good playing for anybody but Rex. Yell at him for drafting a young QB who never grew up and then got increasingly gunshy and erratic as the offensive line degraded in front of him. Yell at him for having the best special teams coach in the NFL retire when the overall depth on the team declined below his demanding standards and left him with little to work with. Seriously, the Jets depth problems are not a head coaches fault, they're a scouting and drafting failure that has been ongoing since 2007. They were well-established before Rex even took the Jets job. Not enough good players on the depth chart isn't something that can be fixed overnight. It takes 2 or 3 drafts to really replenish the depth chart when it has declined to where the Jets were in 2009. Two more short drafts in a row is like the kiss of death on that.
I think truly dominant defenses are a thing of the past. The NFL wants points scored and the NFL gets what it wants.
I agree with this for the most part. However if you look at Seattle and San Fran, their defenses are pretty damn dominant. Yet those teams have so much balance that they could put up a lot of points too so your point holds true. The fact that we're all talking about the defense and how good it can be illustrates a bigger issue regarding Rex Ryan. The issue here is his complete inability to know anything about the offensive side of the ball. From in-game coaching, to input he has into players being drafted and acquired via FA, to managing the QB, Rex just doesn't seem to have any pulse in these areas. I think it's a fundamental problem as HC and I he needs to be held fully accountable for this. Furthermore, does Rex even have any clue what it takes to fix a team that has so many holes to fill on offense? Yes, the GM will be the architect but Rex is still one of the builders and needs to understand this area as well. I don't think he has any understanding of this.
when he had it he won big. our 2008 roster had a HOF QB on it and a young Thomas Jones who was better than LT or Greene 2010. Maybe but truly great, one that doesn't melt in big spots.
Cleveland had a good team in '94. The '95 season was ruined due to Modell. This idea that Belichick sucked in Cleveland is incorrect.
What you never hear from the Jets games -- wow so and so has been a force all year. This undrafted free agent has been a diamond find for the jets! the jets just don't seem to find those random no names that explode on to the scene.
Cause Woody must cheap out in the R & D dept or he hired all idiots for the R & D Dept which is why we make so many bad draft picks
If you didn't know yet, Ryan is responsible for drafts before his arrival as well. That includes Gholston pick too. Other than 2007 pick, where Jets ended up with Brick and Mangold, Jets drafted defensive players in the 1st round during the next two drafts. [Revis/Gholston]. God, don't you hate this Ryan guy? Why is he ignoring the offense like that? If that does not convince you yet: 2 left overs from 2006 draft [Ferguson/Mangold] out of 10 picks. 1 left over from 2007 draft [Harris] out of 4 picks ZERO left over from 2008 draft out of 6 picks What's with all the trade ups that end as failures? Don't you hate this Rex dude? I've had it. He needs to go.
I don't understand your sarcasm here, Zach. You don't think Ryan has input on draft choices? On the overall direction of the roster? I can think of some HC"s who get much credit for their input on rosters, such as Belichik, Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy and others. Are the Jets a team that does not get input from their HC? Sounds like a lose lose to me. Either he has been influencing roster moves, or the Jets should get an HC who has worthwhile opinions on the roster.
Obviously you didn't get the message either. What a pity. [Jets roster problem started WAY BEFORE REX ARRIVED.]
Cleveland was 4-5 when they announced the move, hardly the great team they were supposed to be entering the season. BB was a failure in Cle as he has been everywhere as a HC w/o Tom Brady. since the late 90s: Chrebet Victor Green Chad Cascadden John hall Bobby Hamilton Kerry Jenkins Nick Fergsuon Brandon Moore Mike DeVito James Ihedigbo Jeff Cumberland Damon Harrison
