If Manziel is there dont the Jets dare to skip this kid, I want Tony Romo 2.0 improvising and extending plays for us.
one can hope but if we win another game I don't think he'll fall to us, there are far too many QB needy teams that pick ahead of us.
Johnny Manziel: I am ready for the NFL http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1885906-johnny-manziel-claims-i-am-ready-to-play-in-nfl At a media event preceding Thursday's College Football Awards show, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel talked about the 2014 NFL draft. Gabe Bock @TexAgsRadio Follow Manziel: Biggest factor [for NFL] is, "Am I ready for the next level?" You don't want to be unprepared for NFL and leave 2 years on table. 8:13 PM - 11 Dec 2013 Gabe Bock @TexAgsRadio Follow Manziel: I'll sit down in the next few weeks and talk to [my mentors and coaches] to see if I'm ready for the NFL. In my mind, I am ready. 8:16 PM - 11 Dec 2013 The big takeaway was the last part: "In my mind, I am ready." Nothing is official, but when a player says he is ready for the NFL, the chances of him returning to school aren't great. While Manziel's outlook could change depending on what his advisers tell him, it's not likely. According to most, the 21-year-old is a surefire first-round pick. ESPN's Scouts Inc. ranks Manziel as the No. 20 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback behind Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles. CBS Sports puts him at No. 12 and No. 3, respectively, with Derek Carr instead of Bortles ahead of him in the QB ranks. Sports Illustrated's Peter King has Manziel at No. 9 and No. 2. Manziel's dual-threat ability and athleticism are his defining traits, and for good reason. He ran for 1,410 yards and 21 touchdowns during his Heisman-winning freshman campaign and has followed that up with 686 yards and another eight scores in 2013. But as Texas A&M's Twitter feed shows us, he has taken significant steps forward as a passer this season: Texas A&M Football @AggieFootball Follow Take a look at Johnny Manziel's passing improvements since his Heisman winning campaign #12thman 11:04 PM - 5 Dec 2013 Manziel's agility and playmaking ability undoubtedly make him a tantalizing prospect. But as someone who still has room for development as a passer, is that alone enough to make him "ready for the NFL"? That question can't be answered until he is actually playing on Sundays, but judging by Manziel's own words, there's a good chance that will be next year. _
It's going to come down to how Manziel's arm is perceived. The combine is going to tell us that he's under 6 feet is my guess. The NFL is going to discount his running ability some because no franchise is going to want to take somebody with a high 1st round pick and then run him 10 or 15 times a game. That's just asking for trouble. He could easily slip out of the 1st round despite all the hype now. That would be the arm is ok but nothing special scenario. If you have trouble grasping this scenario just think Tim Tebow coming out of Florida. All the hype in the world isn't going to get you drafted up high at QB if the perception that you're a great QB who can make all the throws is not firmly in place.
His arm is plenty strong enough for the NFL. He can make every throw. Those two Alabama games are all any scout needs to see. He made every kind of throw possible and all on the money. He's Russell Wilson 2.0. Not as strong but same height and both very athletic playmakers. I hope to hell the Jets grab him if he somehow falls to us.
The Bortles love is disgusting, just because Mariotta is going back to school this guy comes outta nowhere btw my 2nd favorite QB of this draft Derek Carr: He definitely won't surpass Teddy, but Carr is the next best thing this draft. But back to my homie David Fales - he doesn't have Derek Carr's upside in my opinion, but think accuracy wise, Fales is the 2nd most accurate QB of this draft. We prob won't draft a QB in the first, but I hope Fales is available in the 3rd round to 5th (he won't fall to the 5th) for us. Would love to pick and have him compete along with Geno and a Vet. Simms will be gone, so will Garrard and so will Sanchez. That would leave Geno Vet Fales Fales would have an excellent opportunity to start for the Jets. He is far better then McCarron (as an NFL prospect) who has done more with less.
The only comparisons you can make is that they both have decent arms, they are around the same height, and they're both pretty athletic... But there, the comparisons end. Wilson is 2x the leader Manziel is, and that's what truly makes Wilson great. I wouldn't touch Manziel in the first 2 rounds.
Right, because all Manziel did was lead his team to huge wins the last two years, including putting on a QB display against #1 Bama in their house and this year at home in a close loss. No leadership skills there. Hopefully other teams GM's think like you and pass this kid over and he falls to the Jets. There's no chance he drops out of the first round. Manziel leads through his stellar play.
Enlighten me. I've only seen Manziel twice outside of the usual clips and YouTube montages. He looks a playmaker to me but the 'experts' say that NFL teams will have to accommodate him with shotgun-heavy playbooks. Given that we haven't done that with Geno (and shotgun is about the only formation he does look comfortable in), would we do that with Manziel? Or are the experts talking shit again?
Yes shotgun formation and zone-read plays definitely favor Manziel. Sure we would do that with Manziel if it suits him best and improves the team.
I just said I don't think the comparisons to Wilson are fair comparisons. Wilson is an amazing leader, one of the best in the NFL no doubt about it. It just seems like Manziel isn't going to be able to handle NY too well with the way he handles himself. By all means though, if we do take him he will have my full support.
NFLDraftScout and CBSSports have both updated Manziel to show him as 5'11" recently. That's a move that Manziel and his advisors would make before the combine to avoid a surprise result.
Right, because all Tim Tebow did was lead his team to huge wins over the last two years, including putting on a QB display against #1 Bama on Dec 6, 2008 to win the SEC Championship trophy. Seriously, Johnny Manziel's draft position is going to come down to whether there are teams that believe that he's going to be a big time QB in the NFL. It's not going to be overly influenced by what has been an amazing two seasons in college. Doug Flutie, great college QB, not top 10 pick. Tim Tebow, great college QB, not top 10 pick. Manziel is going to be judged based on what people think he will do going forward not on what he has done in the last two years. If he was anybody else I'd be certain he'd be better off going back to school for his Junior year. Because of the hype and the fact that he may never be better perceived than he is right now he may be better off coming out. I won't be surprised if he goes top of the 2nd round in that situation. I'll be very surprised if he goes in the top 10 though. The guys you really need to compare Manziel too in terms of where his perceived value is likely to be are Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. Both good QB's in college with special qualities and both not 1st rounders because there were reservations also.
Obviously it's going to come down to whether teams think he's the franchise QB. My point about the big wins in college was in response to the question of his leadership abilities. I never said that his draft prospects would be solely based off his college wins, however his body of work is definitely part of the evaluation process. Manziel's draft prospects will also benefit from the lessons that teams learned from passing on Brees and Wilson. He won't be overlooked in the 1st round and he can thank his two older QB brethren for this.
This is undoubtedly true. It would be a major factor if Manziel had another season under his belt. I still believe the sophomore thing is going to work against him.
NFLDraftscout is pretty much CBSSports. I'd think the Aggies site is more reliable, or if his "advisors" were to release something regarding his height, it would be through ESPN or even the Aggies site. You may be reaching here. We'll see what he comes in at though.
He was listed both sites at 6'0" two weeks ago and he is at 5'11" now. Somebody decided to make a change. I'm guessing that the info came from Manziel because I cannot figure out how the change would have arrived otherwise. The two sites are related but there is some lag between their ratings. Manziel is currently listed at 2nd best QB on NFLDraftScout and 3rd best on CBSSports.
