I've read in this thread as well as among others that if Rex were to go they would want (puke) Kubiak...well, as of today he is available. I still say keep Rex. If Kubiak couldn't get it done with Arian Foster and Andre Johnson he's going to blow monkey ass here with our bare cupboard.
Kubiak will be a good offensive coordinator for someone. I find it difficult to believe that he'll have any shot at another head coaching job anytime soon.
I wasn't calling you emo, really just the folks who are going crazy about it. It means nothing what Rex feeds the public. But to be against an entire draft class from the start? What kind of mentality is that for a fan of a team that's rebuilding itself?
I think the problem is that all too often Rex is in the business of anointing rookies to starting roles and it results in veteran expectations. You're right, but maybe not necessarily in the context of the Jets.
I'm not against it, I may not be a fan of this draft class (Sheldon has been a surprise - I am glad he is on the team because he has shown potential). To call it a A+ class shows he doesn't know what he's talking about. Talk with some sense at least.
And Ed Reed will be here starting for 5 more years with Rex as his coach. Mark will be restructured and installed as the starter for the next 5 years. We will draft CB's and FB's galore. Idzik will then be replaced by Matt Millen so that we can find a WR. Next 5 years will be magical.
No idea if his era is over or not, and what Idzik and Woody will do in the offseason, but I think it would be best for the team if Ryan was let go. I am not one of those people who just plain hate him or think he is a complete disappointment as a head coach. He has done some very nice things here during the last five years, but overall there are several reasons that make me think he just isn't a good head coach in the NFL. - lack of flexibility: Life requires people to adapt and head coaching is no exception. Rex seems to have the old school view that once a man says/does something, he has to stick with it no matter how ridiculous it is. There are many examples of this, from him sticking with players who are clearly playing terribly (Sanchez, Geno, Reed, Cromartie, etc) for way too long and refusing to try something else, to his insane stubbornness when it comes to his defensive schemes. Good coaches have their favored playing style/schemes, but they also look at the talent that they have on the team and adapt the plays to that. When it's clear as day that we have probably the worst cornerbacks in the league, Rex still insists on aggressive playcalling and blitzes, leaving said cornerbacks exposed, instead of trying to help them out with a zone/cover 2 defense/safeties. - lack of discipline/accountability: Some of it is tied to the one above, with players never being pushed for their jobs once they win them (often by default, through being a high draft pick or a vet with a reputation), but also, considering how most seasons under Rex, we start very slowly, and our dismal post-bye-week record, it seems like his "best buddies" attitude toward players leads to too many games where they dont give their best effort. - horrid drafting record: This isn't all on Rex, of course, but I believe the coaching staff has a lot of influence on draft days, and his record during the five years is really bad. A simplified way to look at it is you get roughly 7 picks a year, so that's 35 picks in 5 years since he was here. If you look at our current team, how many impact players do we have that were drafted under Ryan? I can count 3 (Wilkerson, Richardson, and Demario Davis). Some others have shown flashes (Coples, Allen) but at this point they are too inconsistent to really consider them. So that's 3 out of 35. If some players become better over the next few years, it might rise to, I dunno, 5 out of 35? That is the reason why our team is so bad right now in many areas (secondary/offensive line/receivers). If you go 3 out of 35, its inevitable that as players leave or retire, you ll have a huge talent drain. - bad fit for available talent: this one is maybe not as important as the other ones, but I think our current players on defense would be better for a 4-3 scheme. The D-Line is the strength of the team, but being in a 3-4, they often face double teams and have to control 2 gaps, so that slows them down in terms of pass rushing. If they moved Coples, who is a natural lineman to the D-Line, we could have 4 really good linemen all responsible for less gaps, and so able to just turn the jets on to get to the quarterback. Having 4 guys there applying more pressure would make things easier on the crappy secondary as well. With 4 rushing instead of 3, we wouldnt need to blitz as much and could have safeties help out the corners much more often. Our linebackers would play well in a 4-3 as well, I think, with Harris in the middle for now (but eventually Davis moving there, I think his speed would be great as a lone MLB), and Davis and Pace as OLBs.
Sadly I really think that Rex is gone. This franchise is showing improvement this year but is in an idling phase. It needs a new face and Rex has had his chance. Idzik has gotten off to a good start finding a QB and making some decent moves but there is a TON of work to be done. Sadly, there isn't a ton of great coaching candidates out there. No Chip Kellys, sadly.
Imo there's still a bit too much of the season left to categorically state that the team is showing improvement. Yes, last year was a travesty, considering Sparano, the Tebow situation, and Sanchez going down the toilet. But those were fairly easy to remedy, and while I in particular think Marty is a big upgrade, and Tebow is thankfully gone, the overall state of the team those considerations aside is arguably worse than last year. Things that are worse include both OG's, the safeties, Cromartie, and the coverage units on special teams. Somewhere between worse and sideways (becuase I do see upside potentiall) is #2 Cb. Sideways, no better, is the rest of the OL, TE's, Smith ( and I am being generous here, and I hated having Sanchez as our Qb), wideouts, kickers, FB and overall team direction and performance. Marginal improvement can be argued for in overall speed at LB, with Harris playing better, but still I think as part of the overall and overrated front seven the LB's are not very impressive. Ivory is a clear upgrade over Greene, though. Marty is better than Sparano by a clear margin. And while the DL is very good, recent play has been less than consistent, and I wonder if these guys are getting tired deep in the season. Where you put Rex in all that is not clear to me, but overall while we are thankfully past the Tebow nonsense, Sparano and Sanchez as the starter, those were easy changes. But for the rest and overall, it is not clear to me that this team is improving.
