I don't know on what basis you are implying that Idzik will not sign a guaranteed contract with an FA. Can't go by this year since he was limited by the cap.
Regarding 2011, nice job cherry picking stats. Sanchez was also deep in the list that year with a 6.4 ypa, 18 and not 17 ints, and the TD number includes running td's, which you did not disclose. His Qb rating was also far below average for starters. Your proposed scenario is not only extremely unlikely to happen, it seems for some reason to be only to exist to offer some cover for Sanchez's return next year. "may" - heh! And of course most amusing with the draft a Qb in 2015 scenario is, what if Smith does not work out? And the Jets wait as you suggest until then to get another Qb on the team, who would be the vet Qb that year? Something tells me you think Sanchez would be an excellent candidate for that job. He's not. He sucks. He won't even be with the team next year, so save yourself the embarassment.
And what's worse is that (outside of junc) you can't tell who voted for whom (makes for better flame wars) Agree about Cutler. Reminds me a little of Jeff George ....big arm but with a 'tude.
No thanks. He's awful. He got Kubiak fired. He's the reason that with all the talent that team has had they've never won anything. Pressure him and he falls apart. He chokes in big games. I'd rather see Geno throwing 30 picks again next year than see Schaub break our hearts.
People voting for Cutler is just as silly IMO. The chances of him coming to NY are as slim, if not slimmer than, Sanchez returning.
The 2011 team had LT out of the backfield -- they had a solid pass catching RB and Schotty called a lot of quick short passes. Who cares if the YPA are 3 or 20 -- you care about putting points on the board. Instead of having Cotchery he ended up in Baltimore and Mason ended up being a waste. Edwards was replaced by Burress. And Kerley was forced into action as the slot. Once again Sanchez was given new receivers to work with a no true #1 receiver. 26 Passing TDs...even with 18 INTs....who wouldn't take that? You have that this year and what is their record? Matt Schaub? A 32 year old QB that is falling apart and is closer to retirement than starting? AT least Sanchez would want to resurrect his career and prove he can start in the league. You don't think that would be another thing that would drive him to play above what he has in the past. Do I know what will be there in 2015 no - but 2014 has lost 2 top QBs and 2 other top QBs have torn ACLs. SO the 2014 draft has gotten weaker. Six teams in the top 12 will be looking to draft a QB...who is going to be left??
Schaub in 2013 and Sanchez in 2012 are virtually the same player . I don't want either on the Jets next season.
Schaub in 2013 is doing what he is doing with a team that was predicted to make a run at the Super Bowl. Andre Johnson, Foster, tate, etc... He fell apart with elite weapons and the same offense as in past seasons. Sanchez in 2012 was Sporano, Tebow, Hill, Greene, no holmes, no keller, no LT, no Burress. I don't see how they are the same player when you compare the system and the talent around them. People keep saying Sanchez sucked in 2012 so screw him...but what they hell was that team doing in 2012? The team was a joke and still managed to stay relevant for most of the season.
Sanchez is viewed differently because he didn't put up good numbers when he had real talent around him. Then he declined dramatically when he no longer had good talent around him. You give rookie Geno Smith Jerrico Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Dustin Keller and a good offensive line and running game and the odds are he puts up much better numbers than he has right now and much better than Sanchez had in 2009. That's not saying he's got anything figured out at the moment but his rookie badness surrounded by less talent looks a lot like Sanchez rookie badness in 2009. You don't get strike 5 in the NFL to prove you're a good QB. Sanchez has had 4 opportunities with different levels of talent surrounding him to prove he can play in this league and he doesn't have enough to show for that. Would it be great if he somehow turned into Alex Smith in a limited system that covered his flaws and exploited his few strengths? Sure, that would be great but it's not likely to happen and what we'll get out of it in the end is a limited QB that we are looking to replace with somebody better. With Geno at least the possibility that he can become a dynamic QB is still there. It's not looking like a great shot at that at this point but we've got much less evidence that says it will never happen. With Sanchez we've got a lot of evidence that says it won't.
People continue to undervalue good coaching. Geno has one of the better play-callers in this league. People arguing Geno vs Sanchez, but continue to leave out important factors such as Schottenheimer and his God-awful offensive system to make their argument relevant. Players on the Jets called him out year in and year out.
Schottenheimer was awful in a myriad of ways. I don't see many people saying that MM has done a poor or bad job with the Jets or that he is awful. The thing is, we fans can see things a certain way, but that doesn't mean that that's reality. For example, it would seem that MM and Lee have done a very good job with Geno getting him to play as well as he has in spite of not being ready to start due to footwork and fundamental issues, learning the WCO and adjusting to the complex WCO drops as well as taking snaps under center. But have they really? Even if they have, are there coaches who could have done an even better job? We can guess and surmise all we want, but it's Idzik's job to know. We ALL have to hope and pray that he is not only competent, but good and will make the right decisions regarding Rex, MM, Geno, in FA and the draft. His decisions this offseason will have a HUGE impact on this team for the next 5-10 years. We all better be careful with what we wish for. We may wind up getting what we wanted and then regretting it (regardless of what side of the Rex, Geno, and positional needs issues we are on).
I don't want him to start (I wouldn't want any of those names to start - aside from Cutler). I just want him to be on the roster so that (unlike this year) if Geno is pissing away a game in the entire first half, but the defense is holding us in the game, Rex actually has someone who can come in and possibly stop the bleeding and win the game.
In case somebody didn't mention it, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Texans didn't cut ties with Matt Schaub after this 2013 season. For whatever that's worth.
Josh Mcown has looked great lately ,He torched the Cowboys last night for 5 tds .Hes a free agent and i wouldnt mind having a guy like him around.Hes 34 and a carrer back up but hes making the most of his chance.Yea i know the Cowboys defense is a joke but hes looked good in recent weeks 12tds 1int 2 rsh Tds .Id take him over Geno.Im already rethinking this the Bears have so much talent on offense anyone might look good.Brandon Marshell and Alshon Jeffreys are you kidding me?Why cant the Jets go after guys like that
You are well known around here, and deservedly so, as a Sanchez Fan. Excuse me if I view your opinions about and against other Qb's as biased.
Sanchez or Cutler would be good to me. After last night, McCown would be fine too. Anyone but Geno/a rookie QB really works for me.
The question is what QB the Jets should go after, now who do you think will end up on the Jets. So out of that list, I want the Jets to go after Cutler. This is true. great post. And while I posted and thought dropped INTs was not a good stat, it turned out Sanchez never cured the turnover bug in 2010, he indeed did get a bit lucky in that regard. Another great post, gonna comment a bit Hey a great short paragraph on Smith! People always want to say yes he should start, no he should never start, but sometimes the answer is maybe/let's wait and see. I don't think drafting a QB in the 5th or 6th round would be that bad a move IF we really like someone who dropped and we didn't sign a FA veteran QB. If we sign Cutler let's say, no way we draft a QB unless one of the top QBs somehow falls to us. Reaching to fill a need can cause problems, especially if you whiff (Sanchez pick for example). I don't like this logic, they've never been good at it is probably not an indicator they'll always miss. If this is the logic, they should never draft a QB again and only try to sign them through FA. I don't think politics is involved. I think you keep Geno because that roster spot and hoping Geno becoming a great QB is lot less risky than letting him go and watching him develop somewhere else. If he turns into a solid backup, not good enough for 2nd round pick, but still serviceable depth.
Fair enough, but I'd still rather have Shaun Hill, Josh McCown, Bruce Gradkowski, or Jason Campbell than Schaub.
