Yeah I mean, we have the best QB in the league along with the best coach how come we aren't contending for a SB like the Pats?
There's every reason to believe that he is at least partly responsible for that lack of talent on offense, if not directly, then indirectly. His expectations of and handling of the offense, and choices of OC have also been so awful, that he has wasted what talent we have had. With all the #1 picks and excellent players on the DL they should have won 5-6 games based on that alone.
No we don't. Just because Rex is fired, doesn't necessarily mean the defense or offense will change. Idzik could look to hire a new HC who favors the 3-4 and the WCO, even if the coordinators themselves change. Those are not Rex's biggest knocks, either. The biggest knocks of Rex that I've seen from Jets fans on multiple Jets boards and from the "experts" are what I posted earlier in this thread (#36). I also left out that even though Rex talks tough, his teams never play tough. If the other team hits them in the mouth a couple of times, the Jets backs down. Rex is all mouth and a bit of a bully. He talks tough, but doesn't back it up with actions. Idzik can't do a darned thing about those. They are all in the HC's realm and are what Rex cannot or will not learn to do well.
Sorry, but this is utter nonsense. There are plenty of excellent DCs around. Just because Rex leaves doesn't mean the defense is going to fall apart. Even more nonsensical is your statement that Rex leaving will stunt Geno's growth. How exactly is that going to happen? If anything, it will enhance Geno's growth since Rex is totally clueless about offense and how to handle a young QB. His forcing Geno to start too early and then shutting down the offense after the BYE has probably done more to stunt Geno's growth than anything.
He's smart as a DC, not as a HC. Different skill sets. Apples don't fall far from the tree. He's just like his old man. Since he's spent so much time thinking of how to shut down offenses, you'd think he would understand how offenses can defeat a defense, but he can't.
I like and agree with much of the earlier part of this post. It's your last statement that just isn't necessarily true and that I take exception with. Yes, unfortunately, more often than not with the Jets, that's what has happened, but it doesn't have to. If Idzik has a brain at all, he doesn't have to repeat the same mistakes that every other moronic GM the Jets have had have made. Idzik could hire a new HC who either decides to keep MM as OC or bring in another WCO disciple, or he could even hire MM as the HC. He could also then hire a DC who runs the base 3-4 or even keep Thurmond or perhaps name Dunbar DC. So you see, it's not necessarily a given that if Rex is fired that they will be gutting the roster and changing all the systems. That is flawed logic.
I've seen a number of you guys who want Rex retained make comments about all we need to do is build up the offense so it can score a lot of points and everything will be fine? Do you really believe that? Do you really believe that Rex will allow the team to do that? I don't, not for a minute. He obviously still thinks the team can win with D. He's too willing to shut things down, go passive and settle for FGs. That's been the big difference in the Panthers this year. Rivera learned that sometimes you have to throw the book out the window and be more aggressive, play to win. I don't think Rex will ever do that.
As long as he knows we need to rebuild the offense and let Idzik do his job of acquiring those players, I think we will be able to reach a goal of being a good team. It's in the best interest of this organization to have continuity.
Rex homers, let me get this sraight. You want to keep the man who kept Mark sanchez in as the starter. The man who predicted SB's and then didn't produce. The man who got a tattoo of his wife with Sanchez's jersey on. The guy who doesn't manage timeouts or challenges worth a damn. Really? 40-37? Is this a champion's record? Substance over showmanship.
lmao you wanted Tebow as a starter, GTFO. I have been up and down on Rex this year, but I think it's in the best interest of the franchise to keep him and Marty here.
Unless you get me Jon Gruden or a proven winner , yeah, I'll stick with RR as opposed to some up and coming nobody who will flame out in 3 yrs.
The problem here is the same one that many were afraid of, handicapping a new coach with a coordinator (which is similar to handicapping a new GM with Rex). I think rex mostly stays because we'll grab 1 more game and end at 7-9. I think Woody/Idzik will see this as better than expected and keep him on. If we do get a new HC, we have to be really careful. If we bring in an offensive HC who clashes with MM, MM was a waste then and he might not want to be here. If we bring in a HC who matches MM offensively, we have to hope the new HC doesn't want to flip the defense, because we are rebuilding offensively we don't need to flip the whole D too. It's a weird spot for the Jets, because you if you want to clean out the GM/HC you do it at once usually, I don't think you stagger it which is what the Jets would do.
I'd try and keep continuity while improving the offensive side of the ball and giving MM an extension as well. 2yr extension for both.
You misunderstood what I was saying. I believe that Mornhinweg leaving would stunt Geno's growth, not Rex specifically. I believe that if Rex is shit canned, then so is the rest of the coaching staff. I find it hard to believe they'd fire Rex and not clean house. Rex is not an offensive guy, never was. He NEEDS Marty to get the offense together. Marty is very good at what he does, and can develop Geno given the time and the weapons. You take that away, you start at the beginning.
8-8 He keeps his job. Considering expectations were really low this year as long as he doesn't end with a losing record he deserves at least another year the right the ship.
It would be illogical to fire Rex and then not give the new head coach control over the staff he has to preside over. That staff is going to have very different opinions of the Jets talent, particularly on the defensive side, than Rex and his coaches do. GM's acquire players. HC's acquire coaches. That's how it goes on most teams and the GM and his talent acquisition staff work with the HC and his coaching staff to keep the fits as good as possible. The Rex Ryan era is probably a different animal entirely if Rex was allowed to pick his OC coming in the door instead of approving of the status quo.
