I think you'll start to see the "turn em & burn em" philosophy that goes along w/ "competition" starting this offseason. Jets didn't have the depth,finances or resources in place to have that type of flexibility. Instead Idzik got the books straightened out, made the roster much younger & turned over much of the personnel/scouting department. Next year Jets have a ton of cap space & alot of players where the writing is on the wall. You'll see a completely different looking team starting sometime around March. PS: I would not be surprised in the least if this coming draft turns into a trade down firesale.
It would be nice for a change to have a GM who knows that one can trade down as well as up and garner additional picks. I'm not saying I'd want him to do it a bunch of times, but 1-2 times would be nice. The problem is finding a trading partner.
we weren't in any hole, the cap was flexible and we easily got out of our cap problems w/ a few moves. we are struggling b/c we failed to provide the QB w/ any weapons.
Did you feel that Mark Sanchez wasn't ready in 2009 when he started? He played just as badly. Right now Geno is having an almost identical year to Mark Sanchez' rookie season. He struggled just as badly as geno, but the difference is he was never benched because our defense kept every game close, regardless of how bad he played. This year our secondary is hurting so games are no longer as close, and we can't survive in games with 3-4 TOs any more.
Mangold, Brick, Cro, Harris, Holmes, Revis, pretty much anyone of our big time free agents somehow deserved to be the highest paid player at his position. Not one guy gave us any kind of home town discount. Was this really such a bad place to play that we couldn't have negotiated more cap friendly deals that would have allowed us to be OK if any of these guys slumped or got injured?
Well isn't that the hole? Our WR didn't do as well as expected, our RBs didn't produce as expected, our QB didn't produce as expected and regressed, our LB were slow in coverage and in the run game, and our run game suffered mightily because of it. The Jets tried to set up the future this season by ridding some of those contracts, keeping their draft picks, trying to get compensatory picks, and loading up space next year. They then suffered a rash of injuries+suspension to the WR/TE/RB group during the season causing them sign whatever FA were possible like Nelson, Cribbs, Salas, etc. This coming offseason/draft is very important to the Jets because it will be the first for Idzik to truly improve the team with a full arsenal of cap space and picks. It will also be the first year for the Jets outside of the Tanny era if they decide to move on from Sanchez, Cro, and/or Tone. Going forward there should be a ton of young players entering this team plus FA they want to target, and hopefully we get some good health so the mantra of competition can be utilized better. If you don't have depth or have injuries, it's hard to breed fair competition or competition in general.
I would disagree. I think our general lack of talent plus injuries should have made it easier to follow the template Mezz pointed out. The idea should have been let's see if the 'shit' on the street is any better than the 'shit' we have on our roster. I think the biggest indictment on our 'lack of competition' is Reed continuing to play in front of Allen.
Ahh I was thinking more TC and before the season starts. Midseason, I think it's harder to have "competition" just because you are going week to week to try and evaluate players. For example look at WR. Cribbs, Gates, and Hazelton are all on the IR. Santonio has been banged up/limited mostly the whole year and Kerley part of the season. Stephen Hill caught 13 passes in the first 3 games, and 11 passes in the following 9 games. For competition sake, he should be benched or at least not starting. How do you do that when Hill has been your only receiver to play all 12 games this year
fortunately Sanchez, the major cause for Jet offensive problems AND lack of cap space (contract so horrible and play so horrible that no other team was even close to stupid enough to want him) will be permanently removed from the team shortly after the end of the 2013 season leaving the Jets GM with the financial freedom to continue to clean up the Aegean Stablle left to him by his predecessor
Yes, I think this is a fair point, but this may be a case of RR not playing well with others. More to the point, I think that RR probably went to Idzik and asked for Reed to be signed to flesh out the secondary. If i were Idzik I would have looked at this as an ideal opportunity to see if RR could put his relationships aside for the good of the team. Apparently he cannot.
he didn't play anywhere near as badly and proved that first month he was ready playing outstanding football and helping us to a 3-1 record. he had some brutal games but they didn't carry over from week to week, geno was horrible for most of the season- Mark was good for most of the season.
That would be a waste. IMO that would be as bad as drafting an OG in round 1. The average career of NFL RBs is 3 years I think, maybe 5 at the outside. The NFL is not a rushing league any more, but a passing league. It has also been proven that perhaps more than any other position, excellent RBs can be found anywhere in the draft, even as UDFAs.
That literally makes no sense. The job is Chris Ivory's to lose I think going forward. 4.4 YPC - plus you got Powell pushing him each and every week.
