Voted for Cutler because he was the best of those options. Aaron Murray or Logan Thomas would be great value in the late 3rd or early 4th.
I think the child that Randall is holding in that photo actually passed away tragically. I don't think that is the same kid as the one in the next photo.
Build the OL and get a good TE and WR and roll with Geno for another year. A veteran QB just sets the program back another year. I'm not convinced Geno sucks yet.
i go with mcown and draft another qb in the mid rounds, cutler needs to go to a win now team,we are not there. even if we get a wr and te in rounds 1 and 2 they will still be rookies and come with all the issues we see from rookies. i am looking for a journeyman that won't hold the team back capwise and development wise while we groom the hopeful 10 year starter. schaub would be interesting but i think he falls in the same category as cutler andhas had one of the top wr's in th league. not sure how he would look having to elevate the talent around him
While this is a common perception about Cutler, I think if you drill down a bit on his history, it is not really all that concerning. Before I get to Cutler, I think of the various strategies at Qb going forward, getting a solid vet makes the most sense right now. At best Smith may be able to develop in the Aaron Rodgers way, and I have no confidence he will be a top half NFL Qb by next season no matter what he does this off season. The core of quality Jet players is aging too quickly to wait for a rookie Qb to develop. Time is not on the side of drafting another rookie Qb, which btw the Jets do not seem to know how to do. So get a solid vet at Qb, see if Smith can benefit from watching, and use hte high picks elsewhere, filling other holes on the team. The Jets should have the cap space to sign a quality vet, and of those listed Cutler has the most promise. He is not too old, and should have three or four solid years of play in him, which brings us back to Cutler's injury history... First of all take into account that the occurences of Cutler's injuries do not really establish any pattern attributable to him. Most injuries occurred due to poor protection by his OL (he holds the record for sacks as a Bear Qb despite only playing there five seasons). But what i find encouraging about his injury history is two things. One is he has been injured in a variety of ways, nothing like say Pennington who had chronic issues with his passing shoulder, arm and wrist. Cutler's history is totally different - a concussion here, leg injury there, broken finger, and this year a groin injury. In short he does not display a chronic injury pattern. The second point is in total he has not really missed all that many games. After his rookie season he started all 16 games three years in a row, and of his other four seasons he missed only one start in two of them. This year has been his worst after his injury in the Skins game. But before then he was arguably having the best year of his career. He had only been sacked six times in his first four games, a fraction of his totals in the previous three years. Before he went down he had a Qb rating of 98.2, and threw multiple TD passes in five of his first six games. In short Cutler is the best option and we should not be afraid of his injury history.
Cutler also, despite being injury prone is not a winner. He hasn't been nearly as good since his Denver days. Sure he is talented as they come, but I don't like the guy's mental make-up and demeanor on the field. His rise to prominence was beating a 7-9 Seattle Seahawks team. Now if Brandon Marshall comes along with Cutler, sign me up. We saw what Cutler can do with a limited team and it's not pretty. You go ahead and throw 80 million at him, there are better ways of getting a franchise QB - but it requires a long-term plan. Geno Smith, in my opinion will not be the franchise QB of this team. Cutler will also want a long-term contract which will cost Geno Smith his job for possibility 4 or 5 seasons. That is not the Aaron Rodgers route - Smith's future will be in question more than ever. Cutler is not a 34 year old Favre. Cutler is not the best option for this team.
For someone who in effect called Cutler a concern due to injuries, I don't think you really know him all that well, no offense. I think I established that injuries are not a real concern, yet there you go again restating a tired canard. I don't know about a long term plan for Qb, but I do know Smith is not one to count on in that regard. But the more I think about it with the age of the current core of players, the role Idzik is now playing, I don't see drafting another rookie Qb as the way to go. Get someone in there who can produce next year. Right away. Cutler as I said is still in top form. No one else who is as good as him is going to be available. I mean 98.2 Qb rating??? And complaining about his won lost record at Vanderbilt??? AYFKM? You realize his last game there was a win over Tennessee, which was the first time Vanderbilt had beat Tennessee since before Cutler was even born. As for his pro career, despite some problematic situations, his career won lost record is 51-42. And you don't like his demeanor on the field. I just don't know what to say about that one... Cutler is the best available Qb. The Jets will have cap space to sign him. What the contract might look like is hard to say at this point. But it can get done.
Cutler is another dud waiting to happen if the Jets don't first load up on offense. He's not a game changer and he has one of the better offenses in the NFL to work with in Chicago right now. Without that, he's a deer in headlights. Most quarterbacks are. The Jets need to address the skill positions. Cutler would be a massive waste of cap space.
None taken. I know Cutler very well. I don't just watch the Jets play. Cutler is injury prone, I am not paying a QB 60 million to take that kind of chance. Injuries are a concern, look at Kerley whose been missing for a while. The offense hasn't been the same since he left. Jets need a long-term plan at QB to go along with the young talent at D-Line. idk about you, but I am sick of stop-gaps. The Jets need to acquire skill position players then, draft a QB with upside (and smarts) Cutler is in such top form that he hasn't played in like 5 or 6 games, McCown has been playing very well. Talk about top form. I wish QB rating told the entire story. I don't want stop-gaps, I want the Jets to go the legit way, draft weapons on offense - draft a QB a year later with those young weapons and we will thrive. We haven't tried this in a long long time. Now is the time.
I definitely agree in principle with your last statement. That said, I think they have to have a veteran for next season either to start if Geno or the rookie QB they probably draft isn't ready, or at least to serve as a backup. The problem with hoping to draft a QB in 2014 is that in typical Jets fashion, when they're bad enough to be drafting fairly high, there probably won't be any good QB prospects available who they'll have a shot to draft without trading up. If they trade up, they may get the QB, but still may not have any weapons for him. If they draft the weapons this year and look to get their QB in 2015 (if Geno doesn't develop), then they may be just good enough that they can't get a good QB in the draft. Bridgewater is the only QB I've seen who I'd want the Jets to draft high. I think Johnny Football is a dick. He's shorter like Brees and not very stout. He may be great in the NFL, but he could also get killed. I think he's been exposed a bit in the last several games he's played. In the 2nd round or lower, there isn't a lot to excite me this year, either. If Tajh Boyd falls to the 2nd round or lower, I wouldn't mind him. I've seen Aaron Murray play a lot and have little interest in him. I've also seen McCarron play quite a bit. He doesn't excite me, as I don't think he has that great an arm, and doesn't have the running ability I want the Jets next starter to have, but he seems to be pretty smart and decent at reading Ds. With the way Alabama plays offense, it's hard for me to get an accurate read about McCarron, however. I may be down on him because of his predecessor at Alabama that the Jets drafted (I've blanked on his name). Mettenberger has a very strong arm, but is pretty immobile, and I'm not sure how smart he is or good at reading Ds. If the Jets draft a QB, unless Bridgewater somehow miraculously drops to them or they go all in to trade up for him, I guess I'd want it to be Boyd, Mettenberger or McCarron. I haven't seen the Carr kid play. He might be a good option as well.
Jay Cutler is the only QB that will be available who can turn this offense around in 2014. I don't see the Bears letting him walk and unless we grab a Manziel or Carr it looks like we might get a Simms/Geno/Sanchez(?) battle next training camp. There's also no way whoever we have succeeds next year without picking up a veteran Wide Receiver. Eric Decker might be able to be had for a reasonable price since Denver already has so many options at Wide Receiver, if not him many good options to choose from in James Jones, Hakeem Nicks, Boldin, Britt, or maybe even Jeremy Maclin. I'm just sick of watching this college football level offense and we better put a lot into fixing it this offseason or we'll be a bad to mediocre football team for a long time.
If we can't get Cutler, another name that I think could be interesting is Kyle Orton. As a stopgap for a year or two would he be that bad?
I go with Zack Mettenberg (LSU) in 3rd or 4th round. The kid really improved this year under a Pro-style offense - run by the former NFL OC Cam Cameron. He had a nice running game and two NFL quality WR's. Of course, without some WR's added to the mix the kid will have no shot. Which of course can be said also for Geno this year. 3 WR's (Nelson, Salas and Cribbs) none of which were on NFL rosters at Week 1 this year and Stephen Hill who refuses to make contact with anything - including the football - because he has had 2 maybe 3 concussions in his first 2 years.
Cutler is an enigma. You watch him he makes every NFL throw in the book. What he doesn't do is consistently drive his team down the field. I think he lacks the mental toughness to be a great QB. You watch him he's as talented a thrower as there is in the league. He just doesn't have it. I wouldn't spend serious money on bringing him in.
