With Geno hitting a rookie wall fast and hard he's lost the right to be a sure starter for next season, and while his career and time in green and white is far from over the jets have to have a contingency plan at QB in addition to any skill position acquisitions made. In my opinion bringing in a veteran Quarterback is the best step the jets can make. A rookie would be redundant as no matter how talented they are in college they're just as likely to get overwhelmed by the pace and complexities of an NFL defense as rookies are want to do. Theres little room on this team for another project or a battle of NOTHING but projects, at least 1 QB with real starting experience is needed to round out the position. with that in mind I've compiled what I think are the best choices available to the jets next offseason. Jay Cutler (keep in mind he's asking for more $$$ than the others) Josh Freeman Michael Vick Josh McCown Chad Henne Mark Sanchez (cut and resigned, no renegotiating his contract at that size) Of the selected which do you think would provide the most for the jets if given a chance to start?
I don't like any of them. But I would like Suan Hill. He could be the best Jet QB to play for us since Favre by a good margin. I think Geno has potential. But I also agree with you we need insurance and a guy like Hill would be a very good stop gap if Geno flames out. I would not be against drafting another QB in a very deep class next year in round 3 or 4. The more the better.
Meet our next franchise QB: Mr Randell Cunningham Jr. Yes, when he was only 5, but he was already a freak athletically (he played on the same t-ball team as my nephew). yup, he's our next franchize QB. I can just feel it. Idzik should put a futures waiver on him right now. I'll bump this in 10yrs as the ultimate "I told ya all so!!!" Heres hows he looking now. He's already a top QB prospect in Nevada. What's Idzik waiting for???
Draft a QB in round 4. Somebody will slip who has value there. Sign a vet stop gap who is going to hold the clipboard unless neither Geno or the rookie is good to go. Good candidates for a round 4 pick: Aaron Murray, J.C. McCarron, Jimmy Garoppolo, Zach Mettenberger, Logan Thomas. Candidates for a vet stop gap: Shaun Hill, Charlie Whitehurst, some guy named McCown (there are a couple on the market), maybe even Chad Henne if he floats loose and isn't getting a starting position anywhere.
I definitely agree that the Jets need a veteran who can start or backup, but the problem is that most of the ones available are awful. Josh McCown and Shaun Hill would be the only two I'd have any interest in. Cutler has a $10 million arm and a $.10 brain. No thanks.
Yes, please add Shuan Hill to that list. I agree he or McCown are really the only guys that aren't multiple re-treads, head cases (Cuttler) and/or not very promising. Hill especially intrigues me as he's been around long enough to have plenty of experience and he's never really been given a true shot to start. I think he'd come in fairly cheap and driven. But that's just me...
That poll list is too shitty for me to even vote. Also I highly doubt Cutler won't be in a Bears uniform next year.
I don't know how many games either has started in their career, but following are career numbers for games played and some other career stats. Shaun Hill Vikings 2004 - 1 game Vikings 2005 - 1 game Niners 2007 - 3 games Niners 2008 - 9 games Niners 2009 - 6 games Lions 2010 - 11 games Lions 2011 - 2 games Lions 2012 - 1 game Career TDs - 41 Career Picks - 23 Career Completion % - 61.9 Career Yards - 6,381 Josh McCown Cardinals 2002 - 2 games Cardinals 2003 - 8 games Cardinals 2004 - 14 games Cardinals 2005 - 9 games Lions 2006 - 2 games Raiders 2007 - 9 games Panthers 2008 - 2 games Panthers 2009 - 1 game Bears 2010 - 3 games Bears 2011 - 0 games Bears 2012 - 6 games Career TDs - 46 Career Picks - 45 Career Completion % - 59% Career Yards - 8,459 Neither are anything to get excited about, but are better than any QB the Jets have had since Favre. They could give solid starts until Geno or a rookie develops, or be a solid backup. The opportunity to compete for the starting position could be an enticement to get either to sign here, especially if Mornhinweg is still the OC and/or we have an offensive-minded HC.
If Cutler is available you have to go get him. I don't trust the Jets when it come to drafting a QB. So let's take another route, bring in a vet that can play the position for a few years while we groom Geno.
I selected Cutler, but wouldn't mind McCown who would be way cheaper to sign for two years or if we can bring back Sanchez on the cheap. I feel a year on the sideline might be what he needed and he wasn't worse than McCown who has resurrected his career. I would like to see what Simms could do with 1st team reps too. Smith is not the answer so move on. Regardless we need to get a QB in the draft, not the 1st round, but in the mid rounds when some of the top 12 will still be available and let him sit for a year or two. I like Mannion from Oregon State as a prospect.
That's the most likely scenario but I don't think the Jets are going into next season with Geno Smith and a rookie as the only options in camp. Nobody wants a DoA season that is ko'd by a lack of a competent QB again. That's been our situation now for two years in a row.
The only quarterback who *might* be available that could seriously improve the offense overnight is Ben Rapelisburger.
IF Rex and Marty are back I guess I'd e ok w/ Vick as a short term stop gap. I would love to see mark cut and re-signed but I don't see it happening. I think Schaub could be a good stop gap too.
Im big on going hard to bring in Cutler he has alot of years of great football left in him .And he would be perfect in Martys throw the ball West Coast offense
Vick would get hurt. Schaub won't be in stop-gap mode. The Jets just need to bite the bullet and sign a competent journeyman that they'd prefer not to have on the field but that won't kill them if the young guys aren't ready. Anybody who has recently made a habit of throwing pick-6's is a bad idea because those don't happen by accident.
Who cares about cheaper options ,If theres one posistion that deserves big money its the QB .If Cutlers willing to leave Chicago and they have a low enough draft pick Tressman may want to draft his own QB.Add two or three WRs draft a te and some O-Line help and we would be competing for the divison for the first time since the year of the flood. Are we seriously talking abot Shaun Hill?and Luke Mcown?Id take Sanchez over anyone on that list except Cutler
Why do teams that Jay Cutler plays for seem to consistently under-achieve? Cutler's teams at Vanderbilt went 11-35 during his career. It is impossible for that to happen with a great QB under center.
