This is what irks me about the jets drafts. ALL of these picks were developmental/project picks. When will we ever select an AJ Green, Julio Jones, Chance Warmack, CJ Spiller, Andre Johnson type offensive talent. You know, a guy who proved it year in and year out in college. No, the jets take huge risks; boom or bust. That's the strategy a team that has many established vets and are no dependent on these picks. This is why the Jets fail in the draft. And they can't develop....
Bro. Do you even read my posts or just come to your own conclusions? Noone is saying that my angles are as impactful to the players as Rex's. Neither are yours or anyone outside of that locker room. I get it. However, that's not the point I made and you clearly didn't comprehend that. The point is that Rex says this shit and it just makes him look like an idiot because the statement has zero validity. No objective person would say that the Jets draft was an A+. So to answer your original statement, yes he is delusional and talks out his ass.
Perhaps saying that he hasn't "learned or adapted" is too broad a stroke, but in a number of areas it definitely is true. He still can't handle the clock. He still gets too conservative and passive with the offense and gave up even trying to learn about offense. I think the shift to primarily running the ball since the bye is squarely on Rex. It has his fingerprints all over it. He hasn't learned there. Geno was turning the ball over, but was learning, improving and the team was winning. Since the change, Geno seems to have gone into a shell and the offense has gone down the tubes. That's not Mornhinweg's modus operandi, but it is Rex's.
Kerley's been gone since the bye. I think the Jets just haven't managed to do anything with no healthy professional receivers on the field. Holmes is mailing it in at least partly because his foot probably hurts like hell by now. That's par for the course the first year after a Lis franc surgery. He's also likely terrified that his career might be over if nobody signs him next year after the Jets cut him. Winslow has been largely written out of the game plan. Not sure why that is but it is what it is. There really is nobody else that is even close to a plus player. And Geno Smith and Matt Simms clearly are not even close to a plus QB at this point.
Because THAT'S what really matters, right? What Rex says to the media? We're talking about the guy that practices with these guys every day. It might be motivational, or he might see a very bright future. We only see the friggin guys for 60 minutes per week (an incredibly small sample size compared to the amount of time spent practicing), yet fans constantly act like they know more than coaches and managers that get paid millions to fit into that very small niche of people that can coach an NFL caliber team. I'm thinking it's to help restore Geno's confidence, but I trust Rex and still don't care about petty media drama and gossip. He's got his reasons to say what he said. I just don't get the over reactions to it. So many damn emo fans.
Okay, what DO you say? This team sucks and all but a handful of the guys on the team suck? How's that going to go over in the locker room? At least here the team believes that Ryan has their interests in mind and cares about what they think. They also know that a bunch of them are getting their walking papers in a month, but the ones hanging around need to know their coach is trying to keep it together.
You really think what he said was motivational? Sounds like praising to me. I simply was against this draft class from the start, it's not about being emo - that makes no sense what-so-ever. You know what I would say? I wouldn't say SHIT, I would keep it in house - tell the media that we have much more to improve on. Said and done. I don't need to satisfy or tell the media anything.
I was thinking about this bit that Rex is saying what he is because he's afraid of Idzik, and more afraid of saying something that might be seen by Idzik as critical of him than he is of being seen as a no cred liar. Well, I would hardly say that is clearly not the case, because it might well be, Rex not being the smartest guy in the world. But there's an argument for him being more concerned to be seen as NOT being a liar. First of all Idzik I think has likely already made up his mind to fire Rex, unless Rex somehow leads the team to three wins down the stretch. I doubt anything Rex SAYS will affect the outcome in his favor. Whether the standard of performance is fair or not, if he wants to come back it will have to be based on results. Second, Rex should look to his future and wonder whether his prospects elsewhere will really be helped by statements like the A+ one, or the perception he is playing Smith to curry favor with a possibly incompetent GM. If Rex is fired and wants to work elsewhere, I don't see how those kinds of decisions and statements help him.
You know BB, I was thinking the same thing as I sat in the runway this morning reading the A+ article. We have all known Rex to go an overhype a guy (Vern, Sancho, Hill, Tone). Usually it's for the best interest of the player, let's them know via the media that coach has their back. What I don't understand is why he is speaking this way about a rookie class, before the season is even in the books? Outside of Sheldon, nobody in this class is currently grading out above a C. His statement leads me to believe Rex us in fear for his job. He is showing public support of his GM's 1st draft. I guess you get more bees with honey, right?
To be clear i am not saying there is NO logic behind what Rex I assume thinks he is doing, as you say showing support of his GM. My point is I doubt it does him any good, and meanwhile his overall cred rating is circling the toilet with some other fecal matter, and about to drop even further. I wonder if that hurts his market value when he will be looking for another job next year.
I agree with your statement about the outcome of Rex keeping his job, what I think he is trying to do is play the company man role. What we have not seen from him is the boisterous Rex we saw when he was hired. But I truly think he is just playing a role, when he beat, the saints, pats and falcons, he acted like he won the SB. If the Jets were successful this year he would be the same boisterous man, asking other teams to to meet them in the parking lot for a rematch. I'm of the opinion that he truly believes that his comments showed loyalty to the jets organization, by not speaking ill of those players.
What coach in his right mind speaks ill of his players? Blistering them behind closed doors is one thing but ripping them in the press is a negative move that causes many ripple effects in the locker room.
true, but the population is angry and want their pound of flesh. how dare rex not shred the whole team to some beat reporter.
This is part of the reason that I think the solutions that come out of the Parcells tree are pretty sound. Parcells will give a reporter a little bit of rope with some of his answers and then if he's unhappy with the way the person uses that rope he'll hang the guy in front of a crowd at a press conference if he steps an inch too far out on the limb. Belichik just doesn't talk much moving somewhat unevenly between non-informational and surly depending on the questioner and the question. Watching him is like watching a cable financial analyst talk about corn futures except he won't even admit their existence most of the time and he'll make them sound like a really stupid investment if the wrong questioner starts asking about them. Coughlin has mastered the art of looking aggravated so well that nobody can tell which of the questions really bother him and which don't. Like Parcells he's not adverse to calling somebody out if they're just trouble-making with a question. None of the above are exactly media-savvy but the media doesn't mess with any of them anyway because they are successful and they'll get in a person's face if that person is muck-raking in a way designed to make anything associated with the organization look bad.
And making eyebrow raising comments like the A+ draft quality of all the players does not make his locker wonder what is this man talking about? You guys and this Rex can't do no wrong mentality have to bring it back to reality. He will be kissing BB SB rings after all is said and done. I for one can't wait for the Jets to get rid of him and bring someone in who is not stuck in the 80's....jmo
There was no need to day anything. The team is in a tailspin yet he praises the 4 rookies that "start" saying the draft is A+? Shut you pie hole and move on to the next question.
I can think of about a half dozen coaches, including some very successful ones, who would employ the same approach. Jimmy Johnson, Dick Vermeil, Herm Edwards. Maybe even Tony Dungy. It's just the way some guys work. Praise your players and hope they back you up. Buddy Ryan wouldn't be singing the praises of his players if they were screwing up. He'd be glowering at any two-bit reporter who had the nerve to question his guys and all their blood and bruises on the field while the guy sat in a nice warm press box drinking coffee provided by the team.
of course what he is saying behind closed doors is the same thing he is saying to the press. i asked earlier, why is what rex says held as gospel when every other coach can have anything dismissed as "coach speak"? everyone hated mangini for doing that
How about if he stonewalls the press with 72 versions of "no comment" but shoots you a text of what's really on his mind?
I really miss the Bill Parcells press conferences. They were better than the games sometimes. As someone who watches plenty of CNBC and such, I    It's so true.
