I made the following argument in a mock offseason thread I started in the Draft forum and wanted to get the thoughts of the general forum. I feel that Ducasse was coming on until the penalties derailed him. Last I checked Colon leads the league in total penalties and penalties per game. Both guys are FAs at the end of this year. Colon will be on the wrong side 30 with very long injury rap sheet. Why not resign Ducasse to compete for that RG spot? With his run blocking prowess, the right side is the better fit for him anyway. The same fans who took great delight in Ducasse's benching because of his stupid penalties seem to give Colon a complete pass. I don't know about you guys but the inconsistencies and mistakes of a young developing player is a much easier pill to swallow than that of an almost 10 year vet. We endured all the pain associated with Slauson's development for the Bears benefit. I would hate to have it happen again. Provided he doesn't continue to improve, at worst, he would be a younger cheaper version of Colon, a punishing run blocker, who gets beats occasionally in pass protection and gets a lot of penalties. Vlad just needs to learn how to hold and not let the QB get killed when he gets beat the way Colon does.
I don't see why not. I'll be the first to say it I guess. He was handling Wilfork in week 2, as Gruden kept pointing out. Yes he is a penalty problem, but that can be fixed. His ceiling is still high enough, and reachable enough for me to say lets try one more year.
For 1 one more year? Hmmm . . . nah, I'll pass. And yes, Colon has been ghastly. Every time Jets get a penalty its usually on Colon.
If we have the cap space (which we will) then why not? Unless one of our other OG draft picks from last year steps up in a big way, we will need the depth anyway.
I wouldn't mind extending him, but obviously not for big money. We need depth and the CS has been working with him.
if he wants vet min. 2 years no guarentees, sure. we want all the leverage in case he does show he can play with no cap implications if he doesn't. he takes this he just as good as any udfa we might take a look at
I say no. He's just a project that hasn't worked out and it's disappointing because I really thought he was coming on in the beginning of the year. I think we've seen his ceiling: great run blocker, but dreadful in pass pro. I wouldn't mind him maybe trying out to make the roster, but I don't think he should ever make the 53 man after this season.
Million dollar body and a 2 cent head. No more picking up players for physical prowess like we are the raiders. Lets get some football players.
I have np giving him the vet minimum and letting him compete for a roster spot. But I doubt he would make the roster next year. We need to upgrade at least 1 if not both guard spots next year. I would love to see us sign a FA upgrade for LG and move Winters to RG and draft a guard/center that could challenge Winters and could backup Mangold especially if Mangold's play keeps deteriorating. With 2 better guards maybe Mangold and Ferguson's play will get better and our line can start approaching mediocrity. We have so many holes to fill but we need to solve the OL problem 1st. It has been the number one indicator of how our offense performs. In the 4 games the OL has somewhat pass protected we have had an offense in the 8 games we have not well we all have seen the result. It all starts up front. The Seattle way was to build both lines through the draft 1st then add skill players in later years. Idzik showed a commitment to that in last years draft. Hopefully some of these developmental OL he took this year will show some promise next year. I would expect Idzik to continue that philosophy and take another OL next year along with a blocking TE. Ivory shows a lot of heart but is making almost all of his yards after contact. He deserves a better line. The other big issue we will have next year is CB. Cromartie is likely gone unless he renegotiates his bonus and contract. That leaves us awful thin at corner. Then if we lose Rex I do not even want to think of the defense.
