There's no such thing as a 3 year rebuild in todays NFL. Every team is a good quarterback away from being playoff caliber.

    See chiefs, colts.

Chiefs already had the talent on offense in Bowe and Charles, they just needed a QB to glue things together.

The Colts had Reggie Wayne and drafted Coby Fleener and Ty Hilton alongside Luck.

It's not just the QB. He's the most important piece but you need to have other pieces in play or he's not going to get the job done. The Jets don't have those pieces at this point.

    Back to the OP:

I have doubts about Idzik, and given the overall situation that is not something I say lightly.

Here's the thing - it's one thing to say the Jets are rebuilding, and that fans should not expect great success while the process moves forward. Be patient and all that.

But at this point, what can we say is evidence of progress, of a basis for going forward with greater success in the future?

Other perhaps than the Ivory pickup and of course the overall play of the DL, I can't think of anything tangible. I suppose overall speed at linebacker is a possibility, but it hasn't really translated into significant improvement. I also suppose Quigley is somewhat better than Bobby Malone, but again not to any great extent.

    Meanwhile:

OL. Moore's retirement perhaps could not be helped, but he did almost go to Dallas. Perhaps an effort could have kept him here. Far worse was the decision to let Slauson go. His first year as a starter he was the worst starter on the team, but now is playing quite well. Idzik should have kept him. As for the going forward part, it is too early to tell whether Winters was a good pick and will be a solid part of the OL, or not.

TE. I was not opposed to letting Keller go, and there was not much available. But with an aging Winslow and a mediocre Cumberland, does anyone think Sudfield might stick? Well, let's just say TE needs attention going forward.

RB. I am not as high on Powell as some, and Ivory seemingly cannot catch a cold. But he is a solid runner. But, is this rotation likely to be successful in the coming years? I kind of doubt it.

WR. If Holmes leaves the Jets will need TWO starting caliber receivers to be competitive. Right now, a train wreck.

QB. Enough said elsewhere, but for purposes of this post, the only question is whether the Jets need one or two new competitive Qb's next year.

DL. Yes, the team's sole bright spot. But with all the high picks spent here, you'd have to expect it would be good. Still, solid young players provide hope going forward.

LB. I am surprised how well Pace has held up, and Harris seems somewhat sharper. Coples I can't seem to make my mind up about. Hopefully he lives up to his draft status.

DB. If Milliner does not stick, this corps will be a huge problem going forward. I would not be surprised if all four players who started yesterday are not starting next year. Think of that.

CS. I am near certain unless there's a miracle turnaround that Ryan will be gone next year.

So, where is the improvement from last year? Other than Richardson, I don't see any.

Idzik had one draft and really did zilch to solve any problems we've had on offense. The 2013 draft on the offensive side was a complete bust. I'll see what Idzik does with cap room and a ton of picks in next years draft But if the Jets still have no QB and zero offense Idzik has to go, even after only two years.

No doubt he gets 2014, but I did not anticipate that whether he gets beyond that should be questioned at this point.

I think the D-Line is at least a solid foundation to build with moving forward, along with Davis and Coples. We have a promising front 7 that could be together for a long time. That's also why I dont want to get rid of Rex. Our best talent is on defense. I think we are better off with a coach who knows how to get max play out of them while having a good coordinator like MM to coach the offensive side of the ball.

I agree with you at RB, we need a back who can catch balls out of the backfield. Goodson has potential but I doubt he is a full time player, he's more of a 5-10 touch a game kind of a player. I'd love to be able to get an explosive back who can score from anywhere on the field.

It's hard though, when you basically have no legit talent on the offensive side of the football, it's hard to replace it all in one off season. Last season was about getting under the cap which Idzik accomplished. I didn't love the Milliner pick in the draft, I really wanted an offensive weapon but the Rams traded up for Austin, nothing Idzik could really do about that.

This off season he needs to revamp the offense in any way he can.

Idzik without question is a huge problem as he is as clueless as they come. The NY Jets needed offense in the worst way and they should have drafted some offensive players but the idiot Idzik decides that Millner who is weak and can't tackle is the answer in the first round when we could have taken a WR or TE. Come second round he takes the clueless and gutless Smith again we could have taken another WR. 3rd round the moron takes Brian Winters another clueless Idzik pick who can't block anybody and you want to know why the Jets are giving up sacks at an alarming rate well Winters is without question the weakest link on that offensive line and he was made to look like a fool on most passing down plays especially the last sack when he completely whiffed. In the 3rd round we could have taken RB Lacey. Can you imagine if they took Hawkins, Lacey and Eiffert then we would have had some weapons. Only Richardson has performed above average all other picks have been disastrous never mind the waste of free agent signings with Gerard and Goodson. You should also look at all of the transactions from month to month from the beginning of the football season till now to know that Idzik is a moron. Dave Nelson has been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL and Buffalo waited 3 years for him to show something and they finally put their hands up and said this guy can't play and let him go but don't you worry all of the retreads of the NFL come to John Idzik and the NY Jets.

It is truly sad that we do not have anybody within our organization who has a clue as to how to build a winning football product and what is even more sad that anybody that does wouldn't come to the Jets because they don't want to have that moron Woody Johnson as their boss.

We have nowhere else to go but down from here and I wouldn't be surprised if the lose the remaining 4 games as their offense is as putrid as I have ever seen and I have been a Jet fan for 40+ years and this is as bead as it gets and it appears that it will only get worse from here.

Idzik was so worried about the QB position that he forgot to draft WRs and TEs. We missed out on some decent WRs and TEs

Here are the WRs we missed out on

    - Terrance Williams
    - Keenan Allen
    - Stedman Bailey (could of really helped Geno Smith here)
    - Kenny Stills
    - Marlon Brown
    - Kenbrell Thompkins

We passed on 2 good WRs for fucking Brian Winters, I thought skill position players were more important then Gs?

Here are the TEs we missed out on

    - Jordan Reed
    - Mychal Rivera
    - Joseph Fauria (big fan of him before the draft)

Strike 1 to Idzik IMO. I wonder how many WRs / TEs we even looked at during the draft process?

Or he was so worried about the OL with both guards going away that he prioritized it later on in the draft.

On the 9 and the 13 there were no WR's to draft. Hopkins went on the 27 or something. There were no TE's to draft. Eifert went on the 21.

So Idzik and company did not reach for less talent based on need and deprive us of Sheldon Richardson in the process.

    Think about it.

Tyler Eifert has been decent, so is Zach Ertz. There were at least 4 TEs that we could of had that would of had an impact and 4 more WRs that could of had an impact

On the 9 we should of taken Warmack like I said numerous times, instead we have a bad injury prone CB in Millner. Who cares about conventional wisdom. Look at how bad the interior line is. Our QB can't even make reads. Don't even get me started on Geno Smith, I would of rather sucked with Mark then have the pleasure of watching Geno Smith play for 16 games.

Warmack would of had more of an impact at G, then Millner at CB. He's been benched more then the passes he's deflected!

We had options. Weapons were there for the taken.

Idzik is lucky he drafted Richardson (or was it Rex?) otherwise this would of been one of the worst drafts in recent memory. He better get at least 5 starters next draft otherwise he's off to a HORRIBLE start.

Why let Slauson go? Use him as a stop-gap in the mean-time?

    Jets, Jets

Wow this is amazing. Idzik is supposed to solve all these problems in one year. I hope that your bosses are not as demanding.

Yes, but... You can't take a 21 to 27 quality prospect on 13 let alone the 9. You just can't do that. That's Kyle Brady territory.

Warmack hasn't done anything to deserve his draft position yet, which is a blessing for the Titans because they may not have to pay through the nose to keep him in a few years. If they do have to pay through the nose they're going to let him go, just like every team with a great guard has done over the last decade since Steve Hutchinson.

Guards are important but you can't pay them like tackles and if you draft one up high that's what you're going to wind up doing unless he flies the coop and screws somebody else's cap instead.

You need to show me something. I didn't see anything as a priority. Let's just take the "BPA". That's not how the draft works, you need to combine BPA with need (at a small percentage).

Fucking cornerback, how about Vaccaro? Pretty sure we needed a safety. Striking out on 90% of your picks is not a good start.

EJ Manuel wasn't regarded as a first round pick, Bills took him in the lottery. Kyle Brady couldn't catch in an era where a TE didn't mean much - there is absolutely no value there. TEs are becoming the best weapons on the field in today's game.

I think he's miles better than Winters, plus if you think about the Titans offensive line, they were the worst offensive line in the league last season, they are better but they need more. I think Brick and Mangold would've felt much more comfortable with a blue-chip LG then Winters who really isn't that good to begin with. I hope I am wrong. What about Vaccaro or someone else? Millner was a bad pick.

No. you have to take the BPA unless the value is really close and you are jammed at his position and need the other.

Nobody on the 13 had half the value that Sheldon Richardson did, even for a team deep on the DL like the Jets.

Sheldon Richardson is *the* superstar in this draft based on what we've seen so far. He's the Warren Sapp.

What you are advocating is that the Jets should have taken Tyler Eifert (over-rated Notre Dame TE just like Kyle Brady) and passed on the guy who could be great.

Just bow out of the thread at this point. There was nobody for the Jets to take at WR or TE on either the 9 or the 13 and the more you talk about it the less knowledge you display.

I believe Eifert would have much more of an impact with Jets then with the Bengals. Eifert is a #2 TE, and more than likely will become the #1 TE when leaves. Millner has done nothing to prove his draft status again he has been benched MORE then the amount of passes he's deflected. Do you not see how problematic that is? There are un-drafted CBs that are outperforming him. Un-drafted WRs are embarrassing him.

Any of the players I listed would of helped this team MUCH more going forward then Millner, I don't see how you don't see that. And again, you are dispelling the fact that TEs have evolved over the years and are far better at the position then Kyle Brady.

Stop living in the past. 13, I am glad we took Sheldon, but that 9 spot oh no that was a BAD pick and you know it. No excuses, and his play on the field justifies everything I am saying now.

You better hope your boy Millner becomes a big time CB soon. Offense is going to get Rex fired, surely a player that can actually catch the football would of helped this team.

Bills reached for Manuel and it seems to be paying off so far, I would rather take chances then play it safe all of the time.

I was actually thinking that Idzik was trying to win this season and work with Rex instead of trying to make him a lame duck so he could hire his own coach. I hate the idea of losing on purpose so you can build for the future. Plus if you buy that theory and hope to play to a worse record so you can get a higher pick it's no guarantee that it will work. Many of the lower picks in round 1 are better players than the top guys chosen. But this decision on starting Geno against Oakland is a bad one. Supposedly it didn't play well in the clubhouse last week when it was announced Geno was going to start. The players at least do not believe that Geno gives them their best chance to win because he doesn't. And if they don't believe their team is giving them their best chance to be successful it isn't easy to get them to play hard. And that's what we saw on Sunday. A team that was flat and made mistakes when the season was on the line. Too much of this kind of thing going with Rex the past 3 seasons.

Oh yeah, Eifert woulda been the second coming of God himself with Geno throwing to him and everybody else hurt.

After all he's done so well in Cincinnati with Andy Dalton throwing to him and all the talent outside.

    Seriously?

Look I get that you're pissed off, but be pissed at the right person. Yourself. Nobody thought the Jets were going to be anything but terrible this year and yet they gave us a few games worth remembering a few really good wins. And yer bitching about it. You're angry because the Jets did not live up to whatever fantasy you were holding in your head about 2013.

That's on you not on the Jets or anybody else because this team was never going to be even average this year with all the holes they had.

I'm not mad, I'm not the season ticket holder wasting my money, I expected this team to be better than last season however (7 to 9 wins). I think that was a given seeing the upgrade we made at the coaching position on offense.

However, it is obvious that the Jets did not have a plan this coming draft, and blew away the 9th overall pick and the 2nd round pick as well as potentially every other pick other then 13. Did you not watch the offense last year? Did you not see we needed help on offense? Jets have no clue how to build an offense and it's going to cost Rex his job. This franchise is going to be in a world of hurt. Our record wasn't suppose to be good, but we were suppose to be excited about the future. What fan is excited about the future of this team? They continuously make dumb decisions year in and year out

Jets made some poor choices in drafting. Idzik's first draft and he only gets one good player. Drafts a QB in the 2nd round, doesn't provide any weapons around him and he's worse then rookie year Sanchez. Geno Smith was a bad idea, the scouts everyone knew it except for you and a couple of other posters. I remember when you said Geno Smith reminded you of Chad Pennington ... really? I don't want to hear about "value" when you are rebuilding a team.

Jets don't have a top 100 position player on offense, the rest of the league is laughing at our offense just like they did last year. The Jets don't have ANY potential on offense to look forward to. You would think they would of learned a lesson. If we drafted some players last draft as I mentioned maybe there is something you look forward to in the future. I don't care if you reach, you need to take chances, I guess Millner an overrated Alabama CB was their chance. What's the success rate of Alabama players in the NFL anyway? Like 5%
