Agreed with Mangold on this one...crock o' shit. That o-line has the 8th ranked rushing attack. That o-line is more than capable when there is a QB behind center that can recognize a blitz and change the protection. When he can read, react and deliver. You put just about any other QB behind that line and you'll get at LEAST adequate production. We aren't looking for a Manning here. If we can simply get a MATT Freakn' McGLOIN we win some games!!
I can't wait until Simms actually plays and he gets sacked 15 times and throws four INTs so all you guys singing his praise look like idiots. McElroy Part II
You realize you sound more like a Geno Smith Fan than a Jet Fan when you say such things. I want Simms in there, but I wish I had been wrong about Smith last week. So of course I watch the Ravens game, and Smith confirms my expectations. I could have waited forever to see that.
To me, this has very little to do with Simms and everything to do with Geno. He needs to sit for a while. Trotting him out there to watch him continue to regress and dumbing down the game plan is not doing him any favors. If Simms sucks or gets killed or can't link up with our crap WRs, fine - at least we know he is not the answer. But why is Geno incapable of being benched? Look at Schaub, Pryor, Weeden, Tolzien, Vick, Freeman(x2), Ponder. They all got benched for shitty play, and all of them have a higher QBR than Geno! What has Geno done to deserve the Teflon treatment, and worse yet, what damage (short and long term) is being done by leaving him in there? I'm not saying we give up on Geno and trade/sign/draft a new QB of the future AGAIN. We need to see if he can rebound, or else we are screwed for another couple of years. I just want him to sit for a game or two. The benefit to the team is in (1) allowing Geno to step away from preparation and focus on his flaws; and (2) showing the team that every position is truly open to competition.
Regardless on who you play, either Geno or Simms, this team has no OL and no weapons to throw to. The CS has done nothing to develop players. Stephen Hill is a bust, Holmes doesn't want to play on this team, Ivory and Powell can't get it done and Idzik has a tough job coming in the next draft.
At least Green Bay had the guts to bench a guy who was playing poorly yesterday and put in Matt Flynn who led them on a comeback and a tie in overtime. (btw Matt was available and the Jets could have signed him, too) How can Rex say that Geno gives us our best chance to win when his Qbr is the worst in the NFL in years. He had a total of ten last week and not much better yesterday. Rex pulled the same thing last year with Mark saying he gave the team it's best chance to win and you saw what happened then. Just because you bench Geno doesn't mean you are giving up on him. The org knows they babied Mark and started him (and basically rewarded him) when he played poorly. Everyone incl. Mark would have been better off if he had been benched. He might have though twice before he threw into triple coverages, etc. You have nothing to lose by giving Matt a start and maybe a lot to gain.
Hey, I've always thought Cumberland was a glorified backup myself. Fact is that he has glimpses of being pretty good and mostly just disappears, but apparently showcases well in practice. To me, that is a typical 2nd rate player.
Last year Kerley was the best QB on the team. This year if MM doesn't think Simms is ready it might be time for Cribbs to run the O.
I could cherry pick two of Geno's good games and go on and on about, "Production without great talent!" Doesn't mean much. Very likely McGloin will be in the same boat as Geno soon.
I agree, Geno can't be given the same amount of leash Sanchez was, but reason has to be applied to any competition. Fair to yank a guy after three road losses where our O-line was blown up by opposing defenses and our mediocre receiving corp was decimated by guys being out? I don't think so. Hasn't always been pretty, but Geno has game managed us to wins in four of five home games this season. With his main competition being an undrafted, long shot rookie, I think it's sensible to give him these next two home games to try to right himself.
You can throw in all of the tangibles or intangibles you want. The OL, the receivers dropping balls, etc. But sometimes a new guiy can put a spark into a team and everyone plays better. The team's in an offensive doldrums now and really (to me) it would have been better to take Geno out on Sunday and see if Matt could put a lift in the offense (we saw that last year when McElroy relieved Mark). I don't want to see a repeat of the past two seasons when the Jets had chances to be competitive but went with a Qb who did not give them their best chance to win. If the team tanks under Geno (and it was Rex's call, something we're really not sure of) then he has proven again he has no clue about offense and he should then be replaced. (his defense isn't that good either).
The offense could be just playing down to their QB. Losing focus, losing passion, feeling defeated, never getting in a flow. Week after week of 3 and outs, no big plays, passes traveling 7 yards in the air, no imagination, no hot reads, no explosion. Simms came in against buffalo and the offense had pep - had some spark. I want to see that spark again.
oh, really? McElroy beat Arizona last year in a game that sanchez could not. even the mnf guys said the jets had a better chance to beat titans with greg at qb and playoff spot on the line. as for the sd game, you are excusing smith using the o-line as a reason when he has been much worse at qb than either simms or McElroy were. btw, McElroy had enough arm to throw over the top of our secondary to put up 2tds in 3 series at the green-white scrimmage in Cortland. the bengals did exactly that this year, after greg chose to join their squad instead of letting the jets stash him on i.r. rex continues to insist that smith ( just like sanchez last year) gives us the best chance to win. as the tuna once said: I go by what I see. clearly, either simms or McElroy would do better than smith at this point. after 5 dreadful losses, who says we need to coddle another non-productive qb, just because some rummy in the front office made him his pet draft pick? no wonder you don't see the same curt warner/ tony romo/tom brady stories from the jets. in fact, chrebet must have been a lucky accident.
Mike McCarthy is an offensive genius, but the jets have no coach who is in that class. Rex is like buddy, knows defense only.
No, it's not completely on the line, but who do you expect Smith to throw to if none of the receiving corpse (misspelling intentional) can get any kind of separation? The few times he was able to get one on somebody's numbers, they had no hands to keep it there. Otto Fuckin' Graham couldn't lead these sorry linemen and receivers to a ginmill. "Ryan also noted that Smith's teammates are a big part of the problem. The offensive line has been terrible the last few weeks, and Smith has one of the worst collections of weapons in the entire league." - NFL.com
If Geno can't do anything against the Dolphins, then for god sakes put Simms in. How can it get any worse. Run out two Geno's as the same time? Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I don't know whether Marty is up or down on Simms, but I don't think it is him insisting that Smith is the best Qb to be playing right now. I think it's Rex or Idzik, or perhaps both.
do you watch the games? he's been such an inaccurate passer. The best throws he made in Baltimore were a ball thrown short that Holmes had to dive for and a ball that bounced off a leaping Cumberlands outstretched hands. Get over yourself with the receiver blame game. Jarrett effin Boykin was having 100 yard games with Rodgers, that's what a good qb can do. Shit, Cobb and Jones are B level at best on another team, if they were on our team you'd be saying they're shit because they'd have no catches.
