Geno HAS stunk, no doubt, but if he is the guy the coaches see the most long term potential in, I'm not sure it makes sense to yank him after poor performances in two games where the decks were stacked almost overwhelmingly against him. If we're gonna find out if he is "The Man", or just a serviceable back-up, don't we have to give him a chance in some situations where he has a reasonable chance at success? Team has two straight winnable home games coming up. Unless the coaches get the sense that Geno's confidence is crushed, and his mind's not in it anymore, I think it's reasonable to keep him in for those games.
The competition mantra made sense when the team had Sanchez and a supposedly healthy Garrard. It doesn't have to be robotically applied to our current situation to have meaning.
At this point, it would be hard for any QB to succeed on this Jet team. Beyond the lack of skill players, the Jets have now chosen an offensive approach that's both backward and predictable. Folks on this board last week pointed out that all a DC need do to beat this offense is put 9 men in the box on first down and blitz on every passing down. The Jet response to the crowded box is the wildcat, which works about twice a game and they still have no response to the blitz. It's time to hit reset with Smith. He should sit the rest of year and be reviewed again next year when hopefully the Jets can put real players around him and can actually run a real offense. When you have reached a point where there is no discernible benefit to the team or the player to continue the status quo, the decision to change should be easy. Send Simms out there and please go back to a real offensive strategy. He'll probably get his butt kicked but this is the NFL and that's what he's getting paid for. Who knows, maybe he'll surprise us.
It makes sense NOW, Millner gets benched for being trash TWICE, how come Geno doesn't get benched for being even worse? Don't tell me pulling Geno out at the end when the game is decided counts as being benched because it doesn't Rex will lose this team, if this continues with Geno starting - he needs to pull the trigger and see what he has in Simms.
At least with the awful WR/TE/OL corps, we have a control group - if Simms looks better in the middle of the shit storm then he's justifiably the better QB and should get better with more talent surrounding him.
How much is that backwards approach caused by dead weight behind center? How much better would the skill players look with a QB that can use more of the playbook, hit timing routes, hit receivers in stride?
At this point it's just a recipe for failure with Geno. He turns the ball over, so the Jets go so conservative that hardly any QB could succeed. It's funny, but do you remember earlier in year? Geno was making some downfield passing plays. Converting long third downs. What happened? I think early on, few teams were blitzing the Jets. The early strategy against Geno was to sit back in coverage and try to confuse him. But once someone starting blitzing him, all hell broke loose and now everyone is doing that. There seems to be nothing the Jets can do with Geno at QB to make a defense "pay" for a blitz. The offense is in a total rut now and no good can come from staying the course. A few posts ago, someone talked of a control group with the Jets current skill players. At least by playing Simms you obtain the value of information.
Opposing DC's and their staffs earn their pay by analyzing opposing offenses for weaknesses and how best to counter their strengths. I think it is fairly obvious what has happened since early in the season. Those DC's the Jets are now facing can see what works in defending against Smith. Stop the running game, blitz him, and he will not react quickly enough to counter the blitz effectively. It's rather straightforward, actually.
And in the meantime, Geno gets his ass smashed week in and week out while Rex and Idzik can feel good about Geno gaining "experience". To use a boxing metaphor, this would be like trotting a guy out in the 11th round after being knocked down twice in the 10th and doesn't know where his corner is. Maybe it will take an injury for this CS to see the light. Might be the only way Simms sees any real playing time. At the rate Geno is getting blasted every week, it won't be long..
That does it. I'm about sick and fuckin' tired of hearing some of you bitch about talent. IF you are on an NFL roster you play and you produce!!!!! Don't TALK to me about god damn TALENT! See below please... Outside of Darren McFadden...who on that list of people do you know? Jacoby Ford?? Yeah, only because he's been in the league 4 years! Insult to Injury, McFadden has had a very down year thanks to his injury problems so scratch him. WHO on that damn list do you KNOW? Colleges like Liberty & Hillsdale?? N. Texas?? Yeah Powerhouses...hell...Colorado and Tennessee...Kansas State. Those are the also rans of the BCS Bowl conferences!! Now, the Raiders have a QB on their roster who SMOKES Geno in talent in Pryor...tremendous upside...got hurt they insert the back up QB. MATT FREAKIN'-McGLOIN!!!! You know what. They left him in the 2nd game even with Pryor available...because, unlike the God Damn NY Jets he played well and THEY have the stones to give him a shot! They are in Salary Cap hell this year....look at THEIR lack of talent!!!! Mother F'er!!!!!! Now take a good god damn look at Matt McGloin's numbers. Go to their roster and take a look at who's on THEIR o-line. It's a who's who of NOBODY's! Brice Butler - San Diego Jacoby Ford - Clemson Andre Holmes - Hillsdale Greg Jenkins - Alabama St. Rashad Jennings - Liberty Nik Kasa - Colorado Jeron Mastrud - Kansas State Darren McFadden - Arkansas Denarius Moore - Tennessee Jamize Olawale - N. Texas Mychale Rivera - Tennessee Marcel Reese - Washington Jeremy Stewart - Stanford Rod Streater - Temple Matt McGloin 18/32 197 3 td 0 int - Texans Game Matt McGloin 19/32 260 1 td 1 int - Titans Game They lost to the butt suckin' Titans by a measly few points! We got blown out. He may be completing 50% of his passes but it is competitive!!! MATT FREAKIN'-McGLOIN!!!!!!! Undrafted FA out of that fantastic QB factory called Penn State. Yeah...talk to me about talent. They've also been blown out by my standards twice this year...and both times to the Bronco's and Chiefs...the damn class of the AFC! Not the Bills, Bengals and Titans. Mid level to shit teams. Yeah, talk to me about talent. Wanna make a bet and hedge on whether or not we can beat this talentless Raiders team??
I'm not talking about our D-line Mr. Spank Your Green Pants. I'm talking about offensive production with a lack of talent. Your comment only proves my point and shuts the "we don't have talent" assholes up. Yeah...and when we're in the 4th Quarter and our defense is "gassed" because fuck'nutz Smith has tossed 3 picks and has 2 fumbles and the Faders light our ass up...what will you say then?
Of course it does. If Geno isn't getting the job done, his job should be in jeopardy, just like everyone else. It's basic accountability and it is really easy to apply and understand. One of the things that really bothered me about Sanchez in the last year was his sense of entitlement. For all of the "I've got to be better" quotes, he didn't really seem interested in getting better and kept making the same mistakes over and over again. There are times when sitting on the bench gets the message across that you are constantly competing for your job and boneheaded mistakes will cost you. For some, it will cause them to work harder and improve. For others, they will go off and sulk. We want to get rid of the sulkers ASAP. Now if Geno had built up this quality body of work, he'd have more leash - like Eli, Ryan, or Flacco. But Geno's moments of quality have been few and far between and it seems like defenses have figured out how to beat him. I haven't given up on him, but he needs to figure some shit out.
It don't matter who's behind center, if the line can't keep him on his feet, we'll be getting the same result over and over. What you don't understand is that many of us, not everyone, aren't backing Geno up because were in love with him, we're backing him up because no other QB in the NFL could do anything with this offensive line. If we had a better option at the QB spot then I'm sure we'd all be for it. I doubt that there's anyone in love with Geno the way people were with Tebow. All we want is a QB that plays well, wether it be Geno or Simms or Sanchez or anybody else out there, and with the people on this team no QB in the NFL could play well.
that's such a crock of shit. our O line looks twice as bad as it really is because geno is atrocious and can't make any quick decisions or get the ball out in time. he'll sit back taking his sweet time until the pocket collapses and then you all blame it on the o line. unbelievable.
The only time Geno has been impressive was against a Falcons team with NO PASS RUSH and a Bills team with street guys playing in the secondary. Rex make the change now before you get fired =(
