To be clear, I am only talking about the linemen and not the TE's. Of course you are correct that both Cumberland and Winslow are not good at blocking. I'd actually like to see what Sudfield could do. He's a big dude. But even so I disagree with you about the OL. According to nfl.com, the Jets OL ranks fourth in run yardage total, and even with ypc lower, it is still 13th. Average those out and it is in the top ten (like I said around 8). and that is with a no threat Qb. Pass protection? the numbers do not look at all good, of course, on hits and sacks. But I blame those problems mostly on Smith. As I said he gets blitzed all the time and holds hte ball too long. Of course he's going to get hits and sacks.
The reason our running game doesn't totally suck is because we have had our pass catching TE's hurt or suspended and we run an extra lineman and a blocking TE into the mix on a regular basis. No shit we can run when we have a mismatch on the LOS. Out of our base O we suck at running the ball. We have had a couple of nice games running the ball and we even had a good stat game running the ball against Buffalo but mostly in garbage time. Smith definitely holds the ball to long but he has been hit far to many times on outright fire drills particularly in the interior line which ain't fun for any QB. When guys can come in up the middle it makes it hard to step up or see downfield to throw the ball. Smith is getting crushed far to many times right up the middle. I can't see him getting better at stepping up and letting the ball go if we don't get that corrected.
No OL can consistently prevent blitzes from getting to the Qb without help. The only way to really defeat the blitz consistently is to consistently enough make the D pay for blitzing, by countering it. Smith has not shown he can run an offense that effectively counters the blitz. He does not merely hold on to it too long. He is not successful with the screen pass, or finding his hot read. Does that mean that the OL is great at picking up the blitz? No. But I think it is impossible to blame the OL primarily with any credibility for the problem. It is obvious that Smith holding it too long is a factor, as are the other factors. To say from that that the OL is a bad OL is far from obvious.
Do the Jets have a top 10 offensive line? https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/11/20/ranking-the-2013-offensive-lines-second-quarter/5/ LMAO fuck no.
I've said it all year, Winters wasn't ready to start. Mangold and Ferguson have declined and are no longer near a pro bowl level. Howard is better than Hunter, so we hailed him as a god. Too inconsistent to be considered mediocre. Only Colon has impressed me.
Our line is weak because nobody is playing well. I've seen DBrick on his ass one to many times, and not because he's trying to cover up for Winters, but because he just gets ran through like if he was a kid.
I said it from the beginning when this post was made. This line hasn't been anywhere near the top since preseason.
Likely bottom 5 at this point. Willie Colon is good for 1 or 2 penalties a game and we can only hope that D'Brick just having a bad year, not completely finished. Brian Winters is playing as poorly or worse than Geno or Milliner right now. I wrote some things in support of Vlad this offseason, and then he absolutely played his way out of the job. Unfortunately, Winters has been worse and should be benched.
LMFAO, no our offense sucks. Not one person deserves to return on it but Ivory and Powell. Jettison the rest.
I think Bricks days as a LT are over, time to switch him over to RT or trade him this off-season unfortunately.
I think that he can bounce back. I would hope atleast. Thing is, this team has too many holes holes to fix everything. I feel like Brick is someone we'll have to deal with next season. Let's hope that he can have a bounce back year.
Hopefully he can, but we need to have a plan B just in case he can't. I feel bad for Idzik he's in a very tough spot and has a lot of decisions to make.
