Another way of looking at it, why do we always believe that an unproven talent is the same as a better option than somebody tested.

What is the likelyhood of simms being the hidden gem.

We will draft another QB next year and that will lead to the same give him time debate. Jets will not be functional until 2016!!

I heard a pretty incredible stat today, in 3 games Geno hasn't completed more than 9 passes in a game. He has 25 completions and 5 interceptions in 3 games, factor in fumbles he has almost half as many TURNOVERS than he does completions, it's amazing really.

Geno is not ready, he is completely out of his league and needs to sit, you can't keep sticking him out there he's giving the team no chance to win.

I have no faith Matt Simms will be a hidden gem, but I do not believe he can be worse than Geno.

This is a bad test of who should be on the field though.

If you think Matt Simms is capable of performing at an acceptable level and helping you win games then you make the change because Geno really needs to sit right about now and start processing some of the suckitude, both his own and others.

If on the other hand you think only that Simms could not be worse than Geno then the question becomes whether sitting Geno is better for his development and whether the losses the Jets are likely to rack up when he sits is worth the investment.

So far the Jets appear to believe that Geno really gives them a better chance to win. They're not willing to take the young QB losses that Simms offers, even if he is competent, until they are out of the race.

Here's what I think is going to happen at this point. I think if the Jets lose to the Fins next weekend with Geno having a bad game that he'll go to the bench and Simms will get a shot behind center. At 5-7 with Geno having 7 weak games in a row the Jets will basically punt on the season and take a look at Simms while letting Geno try to regroup mentally on the bench.

If the Jets beat the Fins next weekend and Geno does not totally suck in the process I think the odds are we don't see Simms until week 16 at the earliest.

I don't think Geno being out there is doing the Jets or Geno any favors. When your QB has about as good of a chance as turning the ball over then he does completing a 10 yard pass he needs to sit regardless of who the guy behind him is.

Geno is not ready and he is regressing a lot, he has no confidence in himself and the team clearly has none in him at this point. Rex should announce today that Simms will start at QB IMO. And not because I'm a Geno hater, but because Geno is no where near ready to be out there.

So true. Sanchez was awful last year, had a horrible string of games his rookie year and wasn't great year 2, but there wasn't a time where they used the wildcat as much as yesterday. There also wasn't a time where you felt that he was as bad as Geno was yesterday. Even when he was replaced by McElroy last year, it didn't feel as hopeless as yesterday was.

Geno is awful and won't get better.

Both points are valid. However if the Jets don't believe Simms will be successful they can't send him out there. Losing with your best QB on the field because he's not good enough is understandable. Losing with anybody else on the field is not.

In this case Geno is a major part of the problems with the offense. However there are other major problems also.

Putting Simms out there to further highlight those other problems would be irresponsible. Putting him out there to do better would not.

So it really comes down to who the Jets think has a better chance of succeeding on a given day and letting Geno take his lumps if they can't figure that out.

There is an argument for sitting Geno as part of the development process but I think that's a decision the entire organization has to be behind. Putting Simms out there is a huge risk at this point. If he shows nothing then the organization just treaded water in the deep end of the pool instead of getting anything productive out of those games.

Put another way: neither of the QB's is getting the Jets to the playoffs without an incredibly lucky streak at this point. Given that the playoffs are a major longshot what does the organization want to do with the last third of the schedule, particularly given how rough December has been on the Jets recently?

I remember it was reported late summer that some in the Jets org wanted Simms to start. This was either a Shefter or Florio report. Simms does have backing within this org

I get all that, but Geno's play is so bad no responsible coach can continue putting him out there. You just can't, he is incapable of playing in the NFL at this point. It really doesn't matter who the backup is when your starting QB is playing this bad.

Wow, what a long way to go to support Geno in one of the worst stretches a QB has ever gone through. The only risk and I mean the only risk of starting Simms is that he does well and the Geno pick looks even worse than it does now. The only person that looks bad from that is Idzik.

It does not matter if Simms does nothing because he really can't do any worse than Geno is doing now it is almost impossible. When your third string RB looks better throwing the ball than your QB it is time to bench your QB and look for another one no matter who he is. Blaine Gabbart even played better than Geno is now his rookie year.

What this really boils down to is the mistake that was made with Sanchez. There was obviously a power struggle going on with who would start at QB and that lead directly to Sanchez's injury. Anyone and I mean anyone who watched the NYG game new Geno was not ready and all the reports coming out of camp said he was not ready yet here we are.

Geno had five completions going into garbage time five. If you don't want Simms to start go find any QB at this point and put them in. I hear Freeman is available.

Edit: Project Qbs do not start right away for this very reason. If Geno was ready to start day 1 he would have been drafted in the first round. In typical Jets fashion we ruin any chance what so ever for Geno to be successful. The kid has talent but it is raw talent that needed a couple of years with NFL coaches and watching NFL games. Very few QBs come back from starts to their careers like this.

Geno Smith is Jay Cutler without the talent... All the bad and none of the good.

Geno makes too many stupid decisions. He wants to be Brett Favre but he is not. He needs to be more Alex Smith and protect the damn ball. He throws some dumb passes.

Then you may be able to equate his performance to Cutler. Cutler was an average QB before Trestman. There is no doubt Geno would look a hell of a lot better if he were throwing to Marshall, Jeffrey and Bennett, a solid OL and was throwing outlet passes to Matt Forte (the best RB in the league IMO)

Without the talent? What do you mean by that? Geno clearly has an arm, that was never the knock on him. The problem is he is utterly atrocious at reading the defense and finding his hot route at this stage in his career. Defenses have figured Geno out. Blitz the hell out of him, don't give him time to throw the deep ball and watch him crumble.

I understand all the hate and I'm with it to a certain extent but I just don't agree with benching him right now. What purpose would it serve? I doubt Simms is the second coming of Brady and would vault the team into playoff contention. And what if Simms comes in and he stinks up the joint? At what point do you bench him and go back to Smith to show "accountability". Call me crazy but I trust the CS more with what they see from practices every day than what the fans think.

No, he's the same qb now that he was before and Forte is good but he's not the best in the league at all. Do you watch football or just play fantasy?

Exactly! It's rock bottom. I really do not understand how you can watch him play and come away thinking any different.

I seem to be missing what your point is. That he was the same QB as before. Before what? I was disputing the Cutler argument as it didn't make any sense. Geno clearly has talent. Every QB ranked highly has talent it's just a matter of whether they can actually translate that to the NFL. When the level of talent around a QB increases as it did with Cutler it helps that QB translate the talent into the NFL. I'm sure there were plenty of people around here who believed Sanchez could be a franchise QB his first two years until the talent around him fell apart and it showed that he was a product of that talent.

In regards to Forte it really is a matter of opinion. Nobody would argue that he is a better runner than Adrian Peterson for example however where I find his value and where I think he is the best RB in the league is his ability to do everything at an elite level. It is very rare to find a RB who can run, receive and pass block effectively but hey, it's just my opinion. This is something the Jets have sorely missed since LT left as Sanchez relied on him heavily in the passing game.

Really?? Did you just start watching football? Cutler was arguably better in Denver at times. He has always been immensely talented and no one would think to say Geno was more talented. Also, no way Geno has Cutlers arm talent, few do.

I get the OP's vitriol, but let's take a step back. Four years ago we brought in a rookie QB to replace Bret Favre who got us to 8-3 before his injuries limited his effectiveness. Before that we had Penny & Vinny, who most of us (including myself) have fond memories of. Sanchez took us to the AFCCG twice and was a big part of those postseason runs. Going into the 2011 season I don't think anyone was clamoring for Sanchez to be let go.

In 2011 we lost our best offensive and defensive players, and replaced Faneca with Ducasse and went 8-8, with Sanchez starting to decline, or at least plateau when we were hoping for steps forward. Last year he was a mess. This year we started another rookie QB with early success that has gone by the wayside into what is turning into a bad experiment.

In summation, let's not go crazy with the woe is us we've had shitty QB play FOREVER talk. In know everyone is into winning NOW NOW NOW, especially after we were so close, but there are plenty of NFL franchises that would kill to have our successes the past decade, as well as our QBs over the same time period.

Yes, losing badly due to having a crap QB that gives the ball away makes you want to pull your hair out, but we have to have some patience and confidence that Idzik is going to make the right moves to get us a servicable QB in the future. The past two years are just a bump in the road. I promise you the NFL is not going out of business after this season, and before you know it we will be lauding the next potentially better-than-average Jets QB.

This is a deadly accurate statement. I can't believe I'm jumping back into this fray again but the Jets Fan in me can't be ignored. The prognosticators that keep harping on about Geno and how "unproven" Simms is are really beginning to drive me up the wall about the comparison. Ummm...Geno IS a rookie. At the beginning of this year he had exactly the same amount of snaps/experience as Simms. His college career doesn't mean "DICK" in the NFL. People throw college stats around when it suits their agenda but then you see threads like the one that is blowing McCarron out of the water because he comes from an "elite" college program and his stats are skewed because the team is basically stacked. Either college stats mean everything or nothing. You can't have it both ways. So flush that horse shit right now. FORGET college. So, as I stated, at the beginning of this season Simms=Smith...there was no >< when it comes to NFL experience. The ONLY difference is Simms passed the "eyeball" test to many of us and Geno didn't this pre-season.

The whole damn paragraph is a BINGO!! When Cribbs looks better passing the ball than your starter then you are fucked. Gabbart my ass...Smith has played worse than Akili Smith, Jamarcus Russell, Browning Nagel...shit the list goes on because, at this pace it will break the NFL record.

There were an awful lot of us saying he didn't look ready. I know I was one and got blasted for it. 11 games and look what we have. He has exactly 11 games of putrid NFL play more than Simms. In relief Simms STILL looked more ready. You know when your ship is sinking you do anything and everything to save your crew. In this case I would equate that to their season and potential to be in the playoffs. Clearly I do not have the same agenda as the NY Jets.

I had to bold this entire one too. If some of you Geno Jock lovers want to stop hearing from the Simms camp...then THIS!!! Hell, Tebow would be better than THIS!!!!! There are plenty of also ran QB's on the street that would be better than THIS!!! If they trust the 2nd string QB sooooo little then why the flying shit is he on the roster? Why not flush him and Garrard and go get a couple of guys they will actually play. Hell...Jamarcus Russell would be better than this!!! There are guys out there.

This AND this... 32 teams passed on this kid and a few twice. Teams that needed a QB far more than we did. Sanchez would be considered a hell of a lot better than Gabbart or McCoy...etc... Teams knew he was a project and he was going to fall thusly. Considering the Jets infinite stupidity in handling QB's of the last decade it's not surprise that they did what they did. It's hard enough to make it in the NFL without having your head kicked in from the get go.

    Crazy insane....

Idzik could not waive a wand and make everything ok in one year.

If you want to blame someone, blame Tanny and the scouts. Our WRs are awful, half of them shouldnt be in the NFL. Our RBs are subpar at best. Not a 1000 yard rusher among them. Our starting TE this year was out of football last year.

I expect rookie QBs to suck. With this kind of supporting cast I dont know why anyone would expect any different. Until we get legit players at the skill positions no QB is going to be successful.

I was more than willing to live with the mistakes that Geno was making early in the season, because he was also able to have enough good plays that it made sense. As much as people are complaining about his lack of weapons, they're valid points, but he had those same shit options at the beginning of the season and was able to have some level of success.

Having said that, Geno is lost and overwhelmed. And if the management was honest about having 'competition' at every position, Geno would be sitting, or at the very least, sharing snaps with Simms at this point.

You simply can not be the starting QB of an NFL team and not throw a TD in a month and keep getting run back out there...
