Sure, in a year or two Geno Smith may become a damn fine QB. Right now he is far from it. No one is saying to cut the guy but benching him would be a rational decision as would adding another quarterback to the roster in case he does not improve.
There is a fine line either way. Most people say a QB needs to play to gain experience. He can not learn by sitting. Yet a few years ago a QB that was drafted never saw the field for a few years. Rodgers in GB took 3 years before he got to play. We are spoiled by LUCK and RG3, Wilson. Its a tough position to play and when there is no college experience to fall back on its even harder. WVU plays a spread offense vs a pro set. I am sure Rex and MM knew Geno was a project and would take time to develop. And yet we are still 5 and 5 and have made the DOOM and GLOOM predictions of many here look off base. So many of you said that we'd only win 2 or 3 games. I think that a guy like Geno who has taken some monster hits will lose confidence if that keeps up. He played with more intensity earlier in the season. If he stumbles vs the Ravens they should sit him down early and lets see what we have in Simms when a team is trying to win a game and he stands in their way. We could be pleasantly surprised or shocked. Either way we have to know what we have in both Geno and Simms.
100%. We HAVE to beat Balt. A relatively clean game and we run it down their throats. We are so close to making it in, I am not ready to throw this season away. Good Geno, good run game, massive pass rush and were in good shape. _
You guys act like franchise QBs are all over the roster,Like if Rex benches Geno Montana is gonna suit up and win the game for us.Simms is Simms ,Gerard is washed up. We have no other options
He wasnt a bad pick, he just hasnt worked out. He was the correct pick- he had a lot of value, and at a position of need. If the pick works out, Idzik looks like a genius. Sadly for us, it hasnt worked out that way. Its still very early, but it would be wise to add another QB next year through the draft (along with some weapons obviously) if Geno doesnt show significant improvement soon.
Oh cmon. He's certainly played poorly, but he has been good for us as well. Sadly there hasnt been much improvement and consistency of the good.
What Geno has done best this year: http://regressing.deadspin.com/charts-who-are-the-best-deep-passers-in-the-nfl-1469917039
Believe me, I am certainly not high on Geno right now. But despite him being horrible a good amount of the times, he has played well too. Once again, Im not really defending him and saying he's great. He has played like shit for at least 50% of the season. But he hasnt played poorly the entire season. Its not me holding onto him, its the truth. I do expect much more from the QB position. Hopefully the Jets add competition through the draft next year.
Yep, really good at it in fact. Pushing the ball down the field early is my hope for the game plan today, the main problem is that everything has to work right for it to work. The WR has to get a clean release and beat his man, the OL has to buy time, Geno has to sit in the pocket to see the route develop, Geno has to make a good throw, the WR has to catch it, etc etc. It seems like recently the Jets haven't been able to put together everything
If our Oline keeps getting screwed they need to roll him out of the pocket more often Suggs wont forgive bad Oline gameplay.
I'm not a fan of having a quick hook with a QB, but I think the only way to drive home the point to eliminating reckless play is with a fear of sitting. Sanchez never had to worry about it, and I don't want Rex to make the same mistake with Geno. IMO last week was the first time that I thought a change was necessary. Simms got in when the game was long since decided. There was nothing to learn about him with the defense Buffalo was running by then. Last week was the perfect opportunity to show Geno that continuing his run of turnovers will not be tolerated.
we could have had Johnny Unitas back there last week and he would have been crushed too. The OL played its worst game in ages. The receivers did not get any separation and we called some curious plays. This is not a defense of Geno but a dose of reality. Geno must play better!
Really, Johnny Unitas would have gotten killed last week? Johnny Unitas, perhaps the greatest QB in NFL history. killed by the Buffalo Bills? With Matt Ryan we would have destroyed the Bills. If this team with our running game and defense had Unitas the Patriots would not be winning the division. I will tell you one thing, Johnny U would have been smart enough to throw the ball away instead of giving it to the opposing defense. You are full of it and you are absolutely throwing the rest of the offense along with the coaches under the bus in your pathetic attempt to defend Geno Smith.
He got some credit the Oline played awfull bad if you check the tape Winters and Colon failed the most , doesnt excuse Geno tho his awarness is poor in the pocket there for no one took him in the first round. I have been a big Geno supporter but if he doesnt get the job settled this last games we should add competition next year it cant be his job to lose if he keeps playing like he did in Buffalo.
Mods can the name of this thread be changed, might I suggest Geno Smith....he sucks.....he sucks .....HE SUCKS
