Ive heard a lot of bad things about Morris this year... I doubt he even touches the 3rd round. From what Ive seen, I havent been that impressed either.
Great matchup Saturday 3:30 CBS Texas A & M @ LSU. Johnny Manziel against Zach Mettenberger. I'd take either of these guys next year. _
How does my boy Blake Bortles look now? He did lead the come-from-behind win against none less than Teddy Bridgewater a few weeks ago.
Impressions of a few of the QBs being discussed here. Both Manziel and Mariota had tough days but didn't get any help from their receivers. Both had drops in the endzone and a bunch of open drops, but both threw really bad red zone INTs. Literally the same int into the flat both of which could have been 95 yard pick 6's. Mariota is not right with the knee but even still has a very smooth and strong arm, very accurate but was victimized by an awful game plan- run run run when they should have put he ball in his hands and let him throw it. There was a series when they were trying to get back in it, inside the 5 and they kept running it instead of letting him throw it. Awful. Lots of drops, but not a gret game. Even still with the bad knee he had a great TD run the got called back on a penalty. Still a huge talent. Manziel has incredible escapability. And is always looking downfield to throw. But threw up a few floaters that were caught by great plays by Evans. Wow, I want that guy on the Jets, he is a fast physical big guy that catches everything. Not a great day for Manziel but it was a slick track and he had a bunch of drops. Zach Mettenberger is a complete stud and a big time QB. MASSIVE arm and throws lasers, extremely accurate. If we have any shot at him, we seriously need to think about it. AJ McCarron, what can you say- efficient, extremely accurate, a leader, a winner. Not so sure it's just the talent around him. 2 guys I didn't see, Taj Boyd with a huge productive day, but it was against The Citadel. 20-26 with 5 TDs. It's like Geno's game last year against James Madison. I mean, who knew James Madison had a football team. Same thing with The Citadel. And Derek Carr. 7 TD passes, the few I saw we're of the bomb type. The announcers in the A&M-LSU game made some ceiling comparisons: AJ = Phil Simms Mettenberger = Flacco Murray = Drew Brees Manziel = Fran Tarkenton or Russell Wilson _
Would love to have any of the 4 QB's you mentioned. AJ and Murray are 2-3 rd picks, imo. I think Manziel is still a top 20 pick and Mettenberger is also a late first/early second.
Bewildered, betrayed, confused, no I'm not talking about Nathan Lane's life as a Fins fan. I'm talking about what the sophomores will be going through this time next year if they somehow wind up in the NFL with all the attendant pressures and lack of fundamental learning opportunities that a pro job brings.
I see people keep sleeping on David Fales. Him or Carr are my favorite QBs in this draft. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
One good year in college. That's enough for us to spend a high pick on a guy? I thought we already made that mistake.
Solid point. But Id certainly take Mettenberger over someone like Aaron Murray who has more experience, even McCarron. Also, Mettengerber has responded well to NFL level coaching (although Cam Cameron was fired for a reason). I see a lot of tools in Mettenberger that can make him an NFL QB. Although I saw the a lot of tools in Geno as well. At this point, finding a franchise QB is a crapshoot for the Jets. I just want them to find THE guy.
You only like him because he can throw a strong ball. I bet you loved Rex Grosman Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Don't listen to the haters. Funny how the criticism has nothing to do with the play but rather the lack of experience. Just once I'd like to hear exactly what is wrong with these guys instead of simply "inexperience". It might make for better conversation on a message board, so I'm guessing none of these guys actually watch the games. Therefore they just screech "inexperience" and slam the book. Is Manziel too small, weak arm, is Zach too immobile, is Mariota too frail? Nope. INEXPERIENCED! Makes for a very boring discussion. _
Have you seen him play at all? Or just the clips? Guy has all the arm talent in the world- extremely accurate for such a massive arm. And he's a big physical guy. _
Im ok with Teddy , Mariotta ( even tho impossible to get) , Manziel , Zach , Murray , Carr even AJ. Just dont get me Braxton Miller , Sephen Morris, Tajh Boyd , Brett Hudley thats just Geno all over again and if so i rather build around him then develop a guy with the physical tools again without the It factor.
Of course I've seen him play. One good season with an NFL level play caller. Inexperienced. I love the guy's arm it could def rip through the Meadowlands wind. I dont like the fact that he's only good season because Cam Cameron came to town. I think he is a fraud. Derek Carr other then Bridgewater is the 2nd most cerebral QB in the draft. I want that guy if he is available. David Fales if he is available in the 3rd
That's fair. My only thought is, what happens if he's NOT a fraud? If Cam actually unlocked the QB he really is? If he's the real deal and just needed a competent OC to reveal that. And if it IS that, maybe you're getting a guy on the very ground floor of his upside? I am so tired of 6-2 or 6-3 guys having the ball knocked down at the line. The guy is 6-5 and is 230 and will probably play at 240-245 in the pros. A rocket arm that can throw lasers with accuracy. Give him to MM and maybe he becomes great. _
So here are a few questions related to the QB class next year asked through the device of prior QB's and why they worked out or failed. 1. Why is Cam Newton doing so well in Carolina? The Panthers run an offense that is well-suited to his skills. They went heavy read-option his first season and he performed very well in it but the team did not win a lot of games. The second season they were really struggling on offense and they mostly put the read-option away and Newton matured, particularly in terms of protecting the ball, and they finished strongly enough to be confident in the offense moving forward. This year they are running a normal offense with the read-option as a 2-5 play a game gimmick and they are doing very well. Newton has become a franchise QB instead of just a franchise prospect as he was in 2011 and 2012. Teams looking at Manziel and Mariotta need to look at what the Panthers did with Newton and figure out whether they can handle the skid marks on the road and occasional bumps that will occur in the multi-year process to settle their young QB down. Obviously another year in school wouldn't hurt either guy. 2. Why is Andy Dalton doing so well in Cincinnati? The Bengals are loaded with offensive talent and have drafted heavily on that side of the ball over the last 5 seasons. 2008 - WR Jerome Simpson 2, WR Andre Caldwell 3, T Anthony Collins 4 2009 - T Andre Smith 1, TE Chase Coffman 3, C Jonathan Luigs 4 2010 - TE Jermaine Gresham 1, WR Jordan Shipley 3 2011 - WR A.J. Green 1, QB Andy Dalton 2, G Clint Boling 4 2012 - G Kevin Zeitler 1, WR Mohammed Sanu 3, TE Orson Charles 4 2013 - TE Tyler Eifert 1, RB Giovani Bernard 2 Do you see what the Bengals have done here? They've drafted so much talent on the offensive side of the ball that they could have brought in Charlie Brown to play QB and probably not failed too badly in the process. Not all of these guys hit of course but when you spend as many quality picks as the Bengals have spent over the last 6 years on that side of the ball you get results that pay off when you find a decent QB to run things for you. I included 2008 even though none of those players are still on the Bengals because Simpson and Caldwell caught 87 balls from Dalton his rookie year before they left. Teams looking at Aaron Murray and A.J. McCarron should look at the Bengals and try to figure out if they have the current personnel to support either guy or whether they are willing to make a major commitment to bringing in talent around them to make sure things work out. 3. Why has Christian Ponder failed in Minnesota so far? This one is fairly simple. Ponder was over-drafted and under-developed after the fact by the Vikings. He was a 3rd-4th round quality QB likely destined for a backup role in the NFL until the combine. He impressed a bunch of people with his attitude and his game film was good enough not to sink him. He wound up drafted in the 1st round and was immediately thrust into a starting role with the Vikings, a role for which he was unprepared and likely incapable of playing at the time. He's a decent QB but not starter material at this point and his natural evolution as an NFL QB was stalled by the early exposure. He's the kind of guy that if he had sat for a year or two might well have turned into an above average starter if the opportunity arose. Instead he is seen as a perennial disappointment, due to his high draft position and early exposure, and will likely have to leave Minnesota and go backup somewhere else and wait for another opportunity. Teams looking at any of the second tier prospects should be very wary of fast risers after the combine. NFL QB is one of the hardest jobs to succeed at and no amount of hype is going to help a guy if you throw him into a job for which he is ill-prepared. In fact too much hype will hurt his chances instead.
Great post. Especially the part about Cincy- they took a guy they view as the franchise and have made concerted efforts to give him weapons to succeed. Loved their picks of Eifert and Bernard this past draft. _
