There is no comparison between Smith and Sanchez's rookie year. 1. Smith plays in a passing offense where he has to carry the team. Sanchez played in run 1st offense and only passed when it was a surprise to the defense mainly on play action. 2. Smith is asked to carry the offense and complete balls on 3rd and long. Sanchez was not allowed to pass on 3rd down because he might make a mistake, 3. Sanchez had the best OL in football Smith has one of the worst. 4. Sanchez’s mistakes happened when the game was close. Almost all of Smith’s TO’s happen when the Jets are far behind (with no fault of his own) and he is trying to get them back in the game. Smith has 10 TO’s in the last 6 games. 9 of those are when the Jets are behind by 10+ points. 5. Smith is accurate. So far this year he has thrown about 15-20% of his passes away intentionally each game that works out to around a 75% completion rate when he is actually throwing to a receiver. Sanchez never threw the ball away. 6. Smith has pocket presence. Sanchez has no pocket presence. Smith makes plays with his legs and lowers his shoulder. Sanchez runs from defenders and gives up on plays to avoid hits. 7. Smith is poised and cool under pressure Sanchez panics and freezes under pressure. 8. Smith can take big hits. Sanchez is afraid to take a hit. The Jet OL has given up close to the most QB hits in football this year. In Sanchez’s 4 years the Jet OL always were in the top 5 in least QB hits. If we had Sanchez as the QB this year at best we win 1 game at most. He could never play with an OL this bad. We would have lost to Tampa by 30+ points. Smith is a QB with actual potential Sanchez is a proven failure. All that being said Smith is going in the wrong direction. His confidence looked wrecked last week. That hit by the Bills on the 1st series changed the game. If we do not learn how to protect him he will only get worse, he will lose confidence, he will hesitate, he will throw off his back foot and he will be indecisive. In the 4 games (both NE games,Atlanta and Buffalo 1) where we have given him time to throw he has played very well and moved the ball up and down the field. In the 6 games where we have given him no time to throw he has taken a beating and struggled. The deciding factor on Smith is will the OL give him time to throw? if he has time to throw we have an offense but give him no time and we need an exceptional game to have a chance to win like against the Saints or Bucs.

Geno 2013: 1. vs. TB in 18-17 win 2,3,4: at NE all trailing by 3 in 4th qtr 5,6: vs. Buf in 27-20 win that helped Bug back into game we were once winning comfortably 7,8: blowout loss to Ten but his 4 TOs led directly to 28 pts. 9,10: vs. Pitt in close loss 11: vs. NE in 3 pt win 12, 13: at Cincy in blowout loss 14,15,16: at Buf in blowout loss 5. Accurate like the miss on the wide open Stephen Hill vs. Pitt which could have changed that game? or is the 56% passing in a more passer friendly system? 6. have you watched Geno play? this is a man that had 1st and 10 at his 15 and took a 14 yd sacks then a couple of possessions later had 1st and 10 at his 16 and took a safety. 7. He has been cool at times, not so cool at other times- just like Mark. 8. The fluke injury he suffered this preseason was the first that knocked him out for any extended period of time. If we had Mark we'd be 7-3 at least. Our OL was MUCH worse last year as was the OC, RBs and at receivers.

Whether the 2009 o-line was the best in the league is debatable, although Pro Football Focus did grade them as such. I certainly wouldn't say they were FAR from the best. That's just silly. I wouldn't call the Jets o-line this season one of the worst either...though I think the drop off from the 2009 to the 2013 line is significant.

I don't buy any of those OL grading systems as they don't know the responsibilities on any given play. That OL was obviously good, was it the best? I don't think so. I think it gets skewed b/c we ran it so well against some really bad Ds in a few games. Our OL this year is not as good but it's not a bad OL.
I would like to see your throwaways. I mean you could say every sideline route on Sunday was a throwaway given the distance it was from any receiver, but in reality he was trying to throw to his guy.
