So because we drafted him in the 2nd round means 10 games is enough? If the CS truly believes the player can grow and be developed, than where he was drafted should have no impact on how long he gets. It should go until the CS feels it's a lost cause
I think midway through next year is a good gauge to reset and evaluate where Geno is at and the future of him with the team. Get him and receiving core and MM a full offseason and let them go at it.
Geno was 8/19 against the Saints and his 8 completions traveled 7 yards in the air combined. Talk about not being able to stretch the field. Just basically telling teams to crowd the line with 11 players because if Geno has to throw 3 yards in the air it's a mystery where it will go. As for rushing stats: 302rushes 1295yards 6TD 129.5 YPG
I don't think any rational fan thinks that 10 games is enough to know what we have in Geno. However, 10 games is enough to get benched if you are not playing well. In the NFL, the development and psyche of a 2nd round QB does not supersede trying to win games especially when you have a shot at the playoffs. Also, getting benched doesn't mean his career is over.
Midway through next year? If Geno shits the bed the final 11 weeks of this season and you give him 8 next year how does that help anyone? Geno is failing at basics you want to see in a QB - pocket awareness, decision making, reading a defense, turnovers, footwork, slow release etc... He really does need to take a seat and observe a bit -- that isn't saying they give up on him they say he needs more seasoning and sometimes watching a game will help re-focus things for a player. Dee Miliner has been benched twice as the #9 pick. Tell me Dee has had more of a negative impact on the team compared to Geno?
Well not being able to stretch the field probably comes down to much more than the Qb. Holmes didn't olay and Winslow didn't play and I believe Cumberland didn't play and Kerley got hurt at one point. So including a rookie QB, MM had Nelson (not on the team to start the year), that silas kid (not on the team to start the year), sudfield (not on the team to start the year), and the invisible man Stephen Hill. Tell me how MM sets up the team for deep passes there? Where's the WR that beats the defense? And that doesn't address that the Jets didn't go full game manager because to me game manager means letting the QB only throw in favorable and instead the Jets put the ball in Geno's hands at important times which goes against the idea of game manager. This could just be differing opinion on what a game manager is expected to do, there's no set definition. Are the rushing stats without Geno? I took Geno out when calculating since if Simms comes those yards/attempts/TDs go away. I agree, I just don't think benching him makes sense right now. It doesn't add up to me. If you think the season is over with Geno, you are basically saying even though the Jets with Geno are currently in the 6 seed, the season is over. If you say the Jets are hurting their shot at a playoff spot playing Geno, you are basically ignoring the Jets got to 5-5 with Geno. It just doesn't add up to me either way, and it's not an established veteran behind Geno, it's someone we would like to develop also. To determine if Geno is the one? That's something you CANNOT mess up on. 1.5 years is kind of low, but yeah I would say 1.5 years is a pretty good spot to evaluate. I think it would be kind of silly to decide without giving the QB a full offseason, and for this team this year, a healthy set of playmakers on offense. So for me 1.5 years is a pretty good, and albeit on the low side, of figure out if Geno is the one. I don't buy making that decision before a full offseason, that seems a bit too early. I don't see why comparing Dee to Geno makes any sense? Dee a CB was benched twice, wouldn't the more relevant be the comparison to Sanchez who didn't get benched until his 3.5 years into the league? It's also a lot easier to see when a CB fails than vs when a QB fails or succeds. What goes into a good TD pass is a good throw, good protection, good routes, good play call, and good throw, and good hands. What goes into a bad play can be any of those or a combination. Compare that to Rex's defensive scheme for corners, it kind of an easier to point out where a CB messed up.
I think you are the only one saying benching Geno basically means the season is over. Rex has 2 young QBs, a 2nd rounder and an UDFA, as well as a vet that should probably be playing with a walker. At this point, you go with whoever gives you the best chance to win week to week even quarter to quarter. Rex can go to Simms and go back to Geno if it doesn't work out. No one's long-term future will be in jeopardy except for maybe Rex's if he decides to ride the Geno train all the way to the last stop.
So next year they let Holmes go - their most experienced receiver. Now you have Kerley and Hill. Winslow is gone so you have Cumberland. Maybe Goodson isn't in jail and he is back in the backfield. SO you need to bring in a TE, at least 2 WR, a new guard and now you need all of that to mesh. So if Smith has issues the excuse is what? Well these guys are all new? They have to figure out how to play together? You can't blame Geno for struggling with a new cast of weapons? I'm not comparing the play of Dee and Geno - I am comparing the fact that they are both rookies and Dee isn't allowed to learn on the job as the #9 pick. Rex has 100% say on defense and knows Dee can learn better watching from the side instead of messing up in live action. Geno is in the same boat -- but Rex as the head coach seems to be unsure of how to handle offensive deficiencies. You have a player that is in a tailspin right now the last 5 weeks. It would make sense to have him take a step back and observe. Players will revolt at some point. Holmes wants the ball, Hill is losing reps and in the back of his mind you know he is feeling like a scapegoat for Geno, the defense will eventually say screw it if they aren't going to take Geno out to at least stop the turnovers why should I kill myself. A struggling QB can cause an entire team to implode. Geno's ability to handle adversity was a question coming into the draft - do you really think he can handle a locker room turning on him?
Those rushing TDs can go away (Smith can run though)if Simms doesn't turn the ball over 20 times. He already has as many throwing TDs in 3 series that Smith has in 5 games. As for running there is no reason to say Simms can't make a few plays with his feet -- hell Sanchez had a bunch of rushing TDs and no one sees him as a runner.
Look at the Raiders -- Pryor was the man early this season. New hope, new energy, now they are going into the 2nd week of the McGloin era - a walk on at Penn State, UDFA had 3 TDs last week and has sparked the entire Oakland team and fan base. Case Keenum had a great half against Indy and struggled a bit last week and got an early hook by Kubiak, but he is starting again this week. Simms college stats aren't impressive but he played for a poor team in a very tough conference. The guy looks more poised than Geno when he gets in the game.
That's great but if he was playing anything close to the first 5 weeks this conversation wouldn't be happening -- but he isn't even in the same universe as that right now. The issue wasn't the early games...granted they weren't all pretty, but the last 5 have all been poor and getting worse.
Why? This was posted by Mezzavo earlier : So I promised it earlier and since I can't sleep I'm delivering now...play by play of Simms two possessions: First snap - hand off to Ivory 2nd snap - 4/3 alignment - delayed blitz by the LB - Complete to Salas 3rd snap - 4/3 alignment - No blitz complete to Cumberland 4th snap - run Powell 5th snap - run Ivory 6th snap - 4/3 alignment - Rush 5/blitz TD Cumberland 2nd Posession 1st snap - Big run Ivory 2nd snap - Holding penalty - Full Blitz - Incomplete 3rd snap - run Ivory 4th snap - Full blitz incomplete 5th snap - Complete to Salas 6th snap - Blitz - Incomplete turn over on downs. So, for those idiots that said Simms got the "watered down" defense they are fools and want to rail against the wind to hear themselves talk. Simms was blitzed on over half of his 7 pass attempts. (1 pass attempt wiped due to holding penalty) 2 of the 3 blitzes were full 6 man rush with the one only being a 5th man delayed blitz. A point of note...when that last pass fell incomplete and our bid for a 3rd TD failed I made a mental notice of how ANGRY Simms was coming off the field. 37 - 14...no shot in hell...just lost the game...he only played 3/4ths of a quarter but acted as if he just lost us the whole game. Pointing it out...
Okay. Approach wasn't different but the intensity certainly was. Bottom line, Simms had more time to throw the ball.
Replacing Geno Smith at this point is a tough proposition if you are looking at him as the potential future at the QB position. The Jets are currently the #6 seed for the playoffs, but I think he'll be a huge part of the reason they don't get in. The guy doesn't even come close to exhibiting any sort of stability there. He's turned the ball over more than twice the amount of times he's scored TDs, for one thing. And he's throwing the ball TO the opponent...we aren't talking about tipped passes and whatnot, generally. You pull him now, and you run the risk of damaging the future with him IMO; that is if you think there is a future with him. You can say "yeah, but he's a rookie and you gotta give him time" until the cows come home...people say that about just about any rookie. Most don't pan out as QBs, really. Tough call, because the backup QB is the most popular guy on the team in times like this, to the fans anyway. Geno is too much of a loose cannon for the type of team the Jets are geared to be, I think. It ain't happening this year, and I think the Jets may need to at least bring in a guy to compete with him next year. Sanchez probably would have won that competition this year anyway, so Geno "won" the job by default in the first place.
Right. They went easy on this UDFA QB, right? That's how you teach your defense to treat the UDFA QBs with lack of experience, right? Of course it makes perfect sense.
More time to throw or was he able to make faster decisions? He was holding and patting the ball for 5 seconds. He was making his read and pulling the trigger.
Geno is struggling right now. No doubt about. He has a fee games to start turning this around or i suspect Rex will give Simms a shot. If Simms fails then I would imagine they will invest another high draft pick at the position. Which thy should. And my guy would be AJ McCarron.
and when he was blitzed he nearly threw two picks. Open you eyes! I like SIMMS and Id like to see more of him as well. but why not say the truth? When people use words like "idiots" to describe other Jets fans with differing opinions, I have no respect for that guy and refuse to discuss differing opinions. case closed.....
