When you trade up in the top 5 of the first round for a QB, you have a lot more invested and therefore said QB is given more "slack". That's just the nature of the business. At the end of the day Geno was a 2nd round draft pick, he's going to get as much slack as Kellen Clemens, Tavaris Jackson, Jimmy Clausen, Pat White, John Beck...and so on got.
I think Mark is damaged goods. No one in the organization except for maybe Rex Ryan supported the guy. And even so, the Giants game they threw him into the wolves with a shit o-line. No support from within, there's no chance he succeeds.
I'm referring to 2009 when he was NOT a FA. He was going into the 5th year of a his rookie contract, which was prior to the current CBA. It did not have the rookie scale so he was going to have a huge cap number the next season. Up to that point, he had numbers WORSE than Sanchez. Like Sanchez he was coming off IR with a shoulder injury and it was a far gone conclusion that the 49ers would cut him. However, Smith approached the FO about taking a pay cut in the offseason in exchange for the opportunity to compete for the job. He initially lost the competition but became the starter later in the season once Hill was benched. I'm assuming he surveyed the what was out there and thought his best chance to start AND have success again was to remain with the team. I'm thinking Sanchez may come to the same conclusion. The question is would the Jets be interested?
Smith got slightly more then 2Million guaranteed. He's salary this year is in the low 400K range and in the low 600K next year. Sanchez took 20.5 Million guaranteed with 58.25 million over the 3 year life of the contract. When Alex Smith resigned with the 49ers he was already cut. He got 15 million guaranteed plus 8 million a year. That was a cut in his contract but anyone who thinks Sanchez is going to renegotiate for the kind of money we have invested in Geno and Simms is off their rocker. The Jets are going to free up their cap and reload the team. The Jets aren't going to pay Sanchez 6 million more then Smith/Simms and Vet brought in on the cheap to compete with him next year.
The years on the Sanchez contract would have to be short with no guarantess beyond next year in order to protect both parties. If Sanchez plays well he gets a chance to re-up and if he stinks it up the Jets can cut him and move on.
Make it 3. I always thought he would be more efficient and further developed as a QB is he was in a WCO. This is the offense that got him drafted 5th overall in the draft.
Geno is a terrible QB right now, there simply is nothing to dispute that. the question the Jets have to ask themselves is have they seen enough good from him to believe that he can be better with more experience?
He completed 23 out of 36 against the Lions and Jaguars who are respectively the 30th and 24th ranked pass defenses this season. He threw a pick 6. He threw a red zone pick. He did this in 5 quarters of play. Some things are eternal and one of them is that Mark Sanchez turns the ball over way too much. It's possible that this is where Geno Smith is too. We know about as much about Geno through 10 games as we knew about Mark through 10 games. The difference is that Sanchez will without a doubt continue to turn the ball over too much. He'll continue to wilt after he gets hit hard a couple of times. That's just what it is. We can at least hope that Geno does what Sanchez could not and progresses into a better level of play.
It seems like the more conservative we get with Geno, the worse he gets. It's completely unacceptable to be playing like he has been though, if he continues to play like this then the team has to bring in real competition and get a real weapon for whoever plays QB.
Yep. There are two possible favorable outcomes for the Jets at this point. One is that they have a plan to get Geno coached up to the point that the flaws begin to disappear. The other is that somehow he raises his own level of play enough to make most of the flaws disappear. I'm not sure we're at coin-flip any more on whether either of the above outcomes happens. We've seen enough of Geno at this point to know that he's got an uphill battle to become a good starting QB. He needs to play better first and foremost. He needs to make better decisions. Then he needs a lot more help around him in the form of stable receiving options. The only guy on the Jets right now that you can project as a plus receiver next year is Jeremy Kerley, and he's a slot receiver. Everybody else is too old, not good enough or constantly injured.
he never turned it over at the rate geno is turning it over, not even at his worst in 2012 w/ the worst skill players in the league around him and he didn't have a full compliment of players for those preseason games yet was still pretty good outside of a couple of plays.
They could offer Sanchez a legit chance to compete and start with a low base and heavy incentives. Play 80% of the snaps, throw for over 3500 yards, make the playoffs,etc...
I agree on this. I think the Jets have been playing conservative football with Geno for 4 games and he has gotten worse and worse as that pattern has emerged. Even the Pats win was a conservative game plan with 52 rushes to about 40 drop backs. The question is whether or not they have done this because they do not trust Geno at all or whether they have done this because important people in the passing game (Holmes, Winslow, Kerley) have dropped out for chunks of the season? It could be one or the other or a mix of both. The last game the Jets were not conservative on offense was the loss against the Steelers. That was a bad game for Geno and the Jets went to the conservative plan and he hasn't had a good game since then.
Simms in 3 pre-season game consistently moved the Jets down the field. He was 44 for 59 just under 75% completion percentage.
Apples to oranges; that restructure was in 2012 after he was already entrenched as the starter. The apples to apples comparison was in 2009 going into his 5th year when he was about to be cut and coming off IR due to a major shoulder injury.
