So next year Holmes - the most experienced receiver leaves and they draft a receiver. Hill and Kerley are back...Ivory and powell are signed. Maybe they pick up another TE...you think there will a drastic upgrade to the skill spots? The defense needs to get a safety and corner and LB-- so you will have a mix of new players coming into the system. Geno flames out over 11 games and fans will not want to see him next year - they will be saying draft a QB or let Sanchez try to do something while Geno sits on the bench. At some point they will have to determine if their money and draft is best spent with a new rookie QB in 2014 or a recycled vet or see if Sanchez is willing to fight for his career.
This year we have had roughly the same quality offensive talent. Slightly better RBs, same WRs, worse TEs, and a worse OL. OC I'll give you. That being said, he's a fourth year veteran. He's past the point of making excuses. If he struggled this year, what would be his excuse? 1st year learning MM's system? FWIW, I don't think Geno or Mark will be our answer.
if he struggled this year it would have worked out perfectly for the Jets. Sanchez struggles, Smith comes in for part of the season that is already lost and he gets to come in next year as the default starter. Unfortunately Sanchez played well in pre-season while the new offense was being learned. 67% completion, moved the chains, put points on the board, and was the winner of the pre-season competition. So now you can say hey save money - don't draft another rookie QB...focus on building skill players around the offense and let's see what SMith and Sanchez can do with improved players. If Smith can't win the battle in pre-season he will never be the guy.
geno has had a few bad games now. i was hoping by this point in the season hed be able to string together some good games in a row. coming off a win and a bye week, nice boost of confidence going against a weak bills team. maybe he was too confident after the last performance against the bills. maybe he just cant get the ball out quick enough to face a pressure d. weve seen it happen a lot already this season. geno needs to get quicker and throw to his spots when needed. footwork still a mess, but its not as bad as earlier in the year. i dont know if they get rid of sanchez at this point. geno has shown flashes but he needs to do more. i know the secondary is doing just awful and dee milliner while making a play or two is still a huge liability, but give the defense some credit, the game didnt get that bad until genos first int. i mean the team could have gotten over dee's horrible coverage but once they got the ball back on their side of the field, well, it was over. also the penalty that gave them 3 points was a real momentum killer
I have not forgotten that Rex ended Sanchez's season by playing him in the Snoopy Bowl. I doubt Sanchez has. Why should he want to play for the Jets rather than start fresh somewhere else? He knows most Jet fans hate him, since they do. He knows Rex nearly lost his job last off season, partly for sticking with him. He knows Tanny lost his job, mostly for extending his contract. He lived through the Tebow mess. He knows his best leverage to get traded or cut is NOT to redo his contract. Seems like a no brainer to me. If I were Mark Sanchez, not that I am a fan, far from it, but putting myself in his shoes, I think the Jets would be the last NFL team I would want to be at next season.
Watching Geno play doesn't make me pine for the return of Sanchez. If Geno keeps playing like shit then we should bring in someone else next year to compete with Geno.
The only place Sanchez might get a chance to start is probably going to be in NY though. Cleveland, Minnesota, Jax, Texans- they are all going to draft a QB and start them. In NY - which he seems to really enjoy living - he can redeem himself and resurrect his career. That would be the reason for him to rework and prove everyone wrong. or he can go someplace at the vet minimum and hold a clipboard like David Carr.
That would mean using 3 top level draft picks in 6 years to bring in QBs without really upgrading the talent around the QB. Can the Jets pass up a top tier WR, TE, RB in the 1st or 2nd round again for another QB right now?
What a story it would be if Mark came back, won the starting job and lit it up. Highly unlikely but, a great story indeed...
I know people will blast this but I agree. I think this offense really fit him nicely. He really seemed so much more comfortable in it than any year previously.
I was thinking about bringing in a vet. Someone like a Kyle Orton. While he's not great he's a serviceable NFL QB and a guy that can run the offense if Geno still sucks next year. Fuck Sanchez he's done here. Geno's garbage play doesn't change anything.

All of the QB's not playing in garbage time looked bad in the pre-season. That just is what it is. Lack of talent on that side of the ball, including in the QB's themselves, is the main reason this is true. People are absolutely forgetting how limited the last QB was. By the midpoint of last year he was Chad "3 shoulder surgeries" limited.
Sanchez completed what 67% of his passes in the pre-season? He moved the team consistently, 1st downs, TDs, FG - he showed a lot of upside with Marty.
Let's put it this way: If Geno keeps these performances up, the Jets are looking for a QB. I'd rather know than be on the fence or lulled into a false sense of comfort. Kaepernick, Griffin III, Freeman, Sanchez, Tannehill are just some of the recent QBs who fooled their teams into thinking they were set at QB. Granted, Washington drafted an insurance policy but the rest of the teams did nothing for contingency plans.
You are right up until the point about him winning the job. He actually did not win it going into the season. Shaun Hill beat him out. Hill got bench in like week 6 or 7, Smith was inserted then held the job until Kaepernick last season. The point is all Smith wanted in exchange for the restructure was the OPPORTUNITY to compete; there was not guarantee he would win. I think that's all Sanchez would want, just the chance to compete.
To have a competent backup (wherever that be Smith or Sanchez) and the best CB in football of course we would of been a better team. At the end of the day, until the Jets have a long-term plan when developing a QB, we will continue to go through QBs like $1 bills at a strip club.
