Why did Alex Smith take a pay cut to remain with the 49ers?

I don't think Geno can do anything this week that would have people saying he is great. If he goes out and is 22 for 25 for 310 yards and 4 TD the response should be about time but can he back that up or is bad Geno going to show up next week? Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

    Sanchez, is signed thru 2016.

He'll restructure, to provide cap relief as, he routinely has, because after watching this season,
He'll be confident he can win the job.

Everyone hates on Sanchez, who had the misfortune for playing under Schotty, and Sparano, but defend Smith who actually plays for a decent OC.

He wasn't going to get a big deal anyplace else, he felt the system being put in place gave him an opportunity to succeed, and he felt he was better than his play had shown over his first few years.

Took a cut, won the job, played solid ball - not amazing but what they needed he fit perfectly. Now he has a bi contract in KC doing the same thing - he isn't flashy, won't make high light films, but his record over the last couple of years speaks for itself.

I agree that if the team wants to say we have a lot of needs we need to address in the draft and don't want to spend another early pick on a QB in 2014 getting Sanchez to lower that cap number with a chance to come in and compete for the job does make sense.

Fans might revolt, but the other option is draft another QB in round 1 or 2, have a competition with Geno in camp --- and miss out on a potential solid skill player at WR, TE, or RB in the draft.

I'm not idolizing any of the QBs, for Sanchez, the wolves smelled blood and they took him out - Geno is making mental errors that should not happen EVEN as a rookie. Soon the same will happen to Geno unless some light in his head goes off.

Sanchez, Geno - they continue to make mistakes that they learned from in practice day in and day out. There are no excuses for these mistakes. At the end of the day, it's not their fault - it's the FO that decided to think they are starting QBs from Day 1. I honestly feel bad for them.

I don't idolize any of them. I want them to control what they can and cannot do. Make mistakes that's ok but have some awareness on the football field.

They don't have a choice but to do this, smith imo was drafted for competition, an to run the wildcat, doubtful he'll ever be more than a backup.

Smith was drafted to start, if he wasn't Mark wouldn't have been playing in the 4th qtr of a preseason game.

I don't see any veteran QBs that will be free this off season that would bring in any real confidence. Sanchez played well enough in pre-season to say hey do you want a shot to win he job again? Question is if they cut him would he take a pay cut to stay here or say screw you and just sign on anyplace else because he is pissed about how he was handled in that Giants game.

Maybe watching Geno Jet fans would be willing to give Mark another shot but I think it will be hard for him here b/c of the negativity of the fanbase.

I'm far from a Geno fan, but this shit has got to stop.

People don't give Geno more slack than Sanchez. In fact, I'd say Sanchez in his rookie year got more slack than Geno is now. "He'll improve! He's only 13 starts away from high school!" Sound familiar?

People give Geno more slack than Sanchez in the present day because Geno is a raw second round rookie (as Sanchez was his rookie year, except he was 5th overall) while Sanchez last year was a 4th year veteran still making the same mistakes he was making his rookie year.

You expect rookies to go through growing pains. Hence the "slack".

If your 4th year QB is still making the same mistakes he was making his rookie year, he's not going to see much slack.

I think we should give Geno the rest of his rookie season before evaluating the future. A lot is on his shoulders with shaky pass protection, no big WR targets, average running game at best, and a defense that is giving up a lot of passing yards. If he continues to play like he did last week vs the Bills, perhaps Idzik will entertain taking a QB in the draft. If Geno shows signs of improvement, something a team can build an offense around, then we can draft WR and OL that fit Geno's style of play.

    Imho, I wouldn't.

I think it may end up boiling down to a health issue with Sanchez; his arm (and some dicey renegotiations/concessions on Mark's part) along with what Smith's end-of-season report card ends up looking like.

Sanchez got his shoulder previously dinged up pretty good a while back (i.e. before the Jints pre-season game) and frankly I'm not sure if it ever fully returned to 2009 strength form.

Further, with this latest injury and season-ending surgery, who knows how he'll emerge from a pure strength standpoint. He's not Pennington 'upstairs' so while he may have some grit, he's not going to get away with a sub-par arm on gile alone, esp. in the December crunch time northeast.

    Time will tell.

Because he was a free agent and the 49ers offered him 15 million guaranteed plus 8 million a year which was more then he could get anywhere else.

Sanchez isn't an FA so we have no idea what he's market price is until we actually cut him.

His 4th year was also the worst talent, most injuries, biggest circus, worst OC in the history of football. Everything went bad in 2012 and they still managed 6 wins somehow.
