Meh. That might have been true in years' past, but the Ravens are ranked 20th as a pass D in total yards. Even their better stat of ypa is merely 14th. They do not in short have a great pass D this year. It is average. Do they play better at home? Sure, but that's on the whole team, and btw why do you expect Smith will play well against that flaming blowtorch when he sucked against Buffalo? In short I disagree on this one. Play Simms now before the playoffs recede further.
With a record of 5-5 and a decent shot at the sixth seed in the playoffs, the most important thing the Jets can find out now is if they can take that spot.
I know the part line is that Sanchez sucks and that he really had a bad year last year. With that being said, we have now had ten games to see what this offense can accomplish with someone else at the wheel and in retrospect he does not look quite as bad. If you throw in the fact that every time he got momentum, Tebow was there waiting to take it away and Sparano was his OC you could make a case that Sanchez should be mostly judged on his first three years. Without his wonderful performance in 2012 he improved statistically in each of his first three years. The team did take a step back going 8-8 in 2011 but with our loss of talent on OL, WR, and our defense getting older I would not say that the fault lies with him. If no one else on our roster takes the reigns and brings this team to the playoffs I could see Sanchez coming back to compete for the starting job next year. This would allow us to give Geno more time to develop and to fill other holes instead of brining in a # 1 pick or a big time free agent to fill the starting QB job.
When Geno throws his first pick 6 on Sunday, Simms will be in... Look for that to happen within the first 5 minutes of the game.
We've got to get real on this though. The 32 TD's was completely outside any of the other numbers Sanchez put up in 4 years with the Jets. It happened when the Jets hired an excellent red zone consultant in Tom Moore and when they signed a completely one-dimensional player in Plaxico Burress, whose one dimension at that point was jump balls in the end zone. If any of the other numbers that year had suggested a leap in Sanchez play then things might be different, but he had a low completion percentage, low yards per attempt, and high turnovers, all for the third year in a row. The TD's were an outlier.
It was a good pick. It may not work out. That's the way the NFL works. It's not like the Jets took JaMarcus Russell or Tim Couch and are now screwed for 3+ years as a result. Putting this another way: Trent Richardson really was a top 10 pick in 2012. That doesn't mean he's going to work out in the NFL. Just that he had the value to be taken in the top 10.
If the Jets had a real option at QB sitting Geno would have been a better move. They didn't. And so we get rookie souffle. It is what it is.
Agree. Anything that can be perceived as remotely positive by Sanchez was an outlier or a mistake or a function of those around him. Everything that sucked about him was totally on him--in 2011 and 2012 he had a massive offensive line (Wayne Hunter was awesome), dynamic playmakers all over the field, an incredible running game, two OUTSTANDING offensive coordinators, a head coach on the cutting edge of the 21st century NFL offense, and a defense taking away the ball constantly giving him a short field just for him to shit the bed. I mean, we've got to get real here, right? _
yea that's bullshit, how many of those are because Geno can't get rid of the damn ball? like half probably.
In 2010 he had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. He had Jerrico Cotchery, Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes as his three main receivers. He had Dustin Keller at TE. He had LaDainian Tomlinson playing behind him in the backfield. He put up 54.8% completions. He put up 6.49 YPA. He had 18 turnovers to 17 TD passes and he led the NFL in dropped interceptions by a wide margin. C'mon man. I liked Sanchez as much as anybody but if he couldn't have a breakout year with all that talent when was he ever going to put it all together? The simple answer is never. He just isn't that good. Geno, BTW, isn't that good either based on what we've seen. But he hasn't had anything like the kind of opportunity to be good that Sanchez had in 2009 and 2010. The Jets had some real talent on offense and Sanchez still looked pedestrian at best.
This is why we need to let him gain his experience this year and then put weapons all around him and see what he does. I do think we should draft a QB to compete, but I also think we need to wait for weapons before we can accurately judge his performances. It is EXTREMELY hard to have a good year with no weapons other than running backs.
I'm agreeing with you. In 2009 and 2010 he TOTALLY sucked it was just the team around him. He did NOTHING positive. Hell, he only threw 8-10 good passes in his entire career--probably only 3 or 4 of them in 2009 and 2010. I would say 90% of his completions were inaccurate and the other 10% were throws a pop warner QB could make. Not one pass that ever wowed you. And don't forget all the dropped INTs in 2010--he had about 50 of them that skewed his number to make them look just OK instead of the dogshit they should have been. And those playoff wins were a mirage, masked by something that had nothing to do with Sanchez. And he NEVER dropped a dime like Geno did this year. NEVER. And then we surrounded him with all kinds of talent and dynamic playmakers in 2011 and 2012 (you know, the kind of talent we have THIS year) and a massive Offensive line giving him all kinds of protection and he continued to shit the bed. I mean--great QBs are supposed to make those around them better, right? _
You can't look at 32TDs and say well everything else sucked. So they brought in the right coach and the right weapon and he nailed it. Imagine if they did that with the OC and other skill positions. That is the best total for a Jets QB ever...ever! 17 INTs -- the fumbles were a bigger issue, but he got killed by Wayne Hunter -- still was able to stay in the pocket and make plays. They screwed up in 2012 with Sporano, Tebow, thinking Hill could replace burress, and thinking Greene could replace what LT did.
You're picking a bad topic to fight on. The sarcasm around 2009 and 2010 just doesn't work given what we know about those teams and how they were constructed. Yes, by 2011 the Jets were in "past window but don't know it yet" mode but the two years before that were all about having a young QB unable to lead a deep veteran team. That Sanchez got the playoff wins is testament to how good Rex Ryan's defense really was and how strong the offensive line was in controlling the trenches.
Yes you can, but that's not what he said. He didn't say the 32 TDs were "good" and "everything else" sucked. He's saying the 32 TDs were a mirage--they were artificially inflated because of Moore and Plaxico. Had nothing to do with Sanchez. That he sucked and was just along for the ride on those 32 TDs. Just like he sucked and was just along for the ride in 2009 and 2010 if you rationalize away anything Sanchez did that was even remotely positive. _
