I think we are overlooking that Geno wasn't the same after that rib shot early in the 1st quarter. The next play he comes back in and we fumble and he is forced to jump back on the ball and got crushed again. No idea how sore he was after that or if it had any effect at all but it shouldn't be discounted, his game went right down after that. Throw in the D was playing fine until we jumped offsides on that punt and Milliner did his impression of a guy who has never played CB before.
No. 1 in yards. No 1 in points allowed. No. 1 in Yards allowed per play. No 1 in defensive 1st downs allowed. No 1 in passing yards allowed. No 1 fewest TD's allowed. No. 1 by a mile in net yard per pass attempt allowed. The ranking may be on yards but who was talking about the ranking? We had the best D in the league in 09 and it wasn't close. You're making an argument that's not relevant to the point. The point is we had the best D in the NFL in 09. Nobody was talking yardage ranking. Anyone arguing we didn't have the best D is simply full of shit to make a point that's wrong.
it's hard to say he wasn't the same since it was so early but I do agree he looked a little off after it.
The same exact game plan Cincy used. 3 and 5 step drops and throw the ball at the top of the drop. Our CBs can't seem to cover no name WRs and they make it worse by giving said WRs free releases at the LOS. If they provided any resistance in the allotted first 5 yards none of those passes get completed as the rush gets there and/or the WR is not there.
He also got no pass protection and the run blocking was piss poor as well. Factor in we saw bad Geno yesterday and it was a recipe for disaster. The Bills have a very good DL maybe better than ours but our O made them look like the 85 bears yesterday. BTW Kiko Alonso is a very underrated player. Guy can flat out play.
Geno is looking more and more like Sanchez than like a franchise QB. It's too early to say anything definitively, but it sure looks like Johnny boy whiffed on Milliner and Geno. Mike Glennon looks pretty good in Tampa. The kid not only makes plays. He takes care of the football. Jets drafted Brian Winters in the 3rd round one pick (72) ahead of the Glennon pick (73). No sane Jets fan can have overwhelming confidence in the war room moving forward.
Touche...based on the numbers I guess it wasn't close. I never really looked at the 2009 numbers. I just know what my eyes told me. It looked like our defense was "one" of the top defenses in the league, but not so much superior than any of the others. I remember then thinking the 49ers and Ravens were just as good if not better IMO. They didn't look that dominant in the 2nd half of the AFCCG.
Glennon is playing w/ zero pressure to win, that is a HUGE difference. Not to mention they are running it well and he has a huge target in Vincent Jackson.
The league has been a passing league for years. What the Jets D did in 09 was nothing short of spectacular based on the way the league is set up to pass the ball. You have to look at how dominating our pass D was compared to the rest of the league in 09 it wasn't close. Our rushing D was real good but you have to factor in the era. The 09 team might have been the best overall D in in the last decade. The Ravens 01 D was off the charts but our 09 D was playing with a different set of rules and they were great.
people that understand the game don't use blind rankings where a few games against bad O's skew #s. Our D was very good, it wasn't anywhere near great and definitely not the best. Indy played 3 playoff games, they had the easiest time against our supposed best defense in the league. Our D folded numerous times late in games, big time Ds don't do that. w/ a double digit lead in the title game against a legendary choking QB we allowed Indy to ruin away w/ that game and it would have been much worse had Indy not eased up in the 4th. don't let blind #s fool you.
best D in the last decade? I have seen some asinine posts but this may be the most ridiculous posts I have ever seen here. wow! we weren't even the best in 2009 let alone best of the last decade. We aren't even in the discussion. Our D wasn't even great. wow!:rofl:
The biggest factor in how well Geno plays each game is how well the OL plays. Of the 10 games we have played we have given the QB time to throw the ball in only 4 games. Both NE games, Atlanta and the 1st Buffalo game. The other 6 games our QB has been killed all game with little to no time to throw the ball. Compare the results. Of the 4 games we have protected the QB Smith had 3 very good games with the 4th game being played in a driving rain storm where both teams receivers dropped 6+ passes each. The common link here is when we protect the QB we move the ball, we score points, we limit turnovers and we win. When we do not protect the QB we get games like Tenn, Pitt, Buffalo2 and Cincinnati. To a lesser extent we get games like the Saints and Tampa where the QB has to play exceptional under great pressure. The OL is the biggest weakness on this team and is what is killing the team. Although MM deserves a lot of blame here. He has failed week after week to find a way to protect the QB. He has failed to pick up blitzes. He runs many routes without checkdowns leaving Geno with little options. On 3rd and long he puts Geno out there and tells him to throw it down the field who cares if he is a rookie and has no protection. His no coddling approach may benefit Geno in the long run but it also may break him or injure him exposing to many hits and to many difficult situations. Improve the protection and Geno can move the ball up and down the field and we can be a playoff team. Continue the poor protection and we will be very lucky to be a 7 win team with a broken QB. But what is much worse than a 7 win team is the broken QB. Continue not to protect Geno and his game will suffer, his confidence will suffer, the faith in the team will suffer, he will be attacked without mercy by Cimini and his coharts in crime. You could see the depression in Genos body language at the end of the Bills game. He looked like he just wanted to go home rather than play football. You could see his focus was lost. The reality is he is a 2nd round pick and therefore easily expendable. Break his spirit because of poor OL play and before you know it we are looking for a new QB.
Thanks Noam Good analysis. Although I am not sold on Geno, I think it is pretty unfair to judge him harshly in his rookie season where OL isn't helping him much. Not saying Geno will be anything like A.Rodgers but Rodgers sit behind Favre for a few years yet still lost 3 games in a row first year he started for Packers. I wonder what Packer fans were saying at the time.
While I agree with your point that the OL has had very shaky games it by no means lets Geno off the hook. Not every top 15 quarterback has a good OL but they get it done by quickly going through their progressions and delivering a good throw. This in general is a garbage excuse especially when you get into body language, and his confidence and faith in the team are suffering. If Geno looks like he doesn't want to be there because he's having a bad and can't bounce back then the Jets had better start looking for a new QB. Geno will be Sanchez only without the playoff games. The lack of talent excuse can only go so far. A lack of talent has nothing to do with Geno turning the ball over 4 times in a game.
