Right now the Jets would be drafting 20 or so and given the four or more wins remaining on our softish schedule, maybe lower.

All those bluechips will probably be gone in the top 6 picks

Fortunately a bluechip QB fell into John Idzik's lap in the second round last April

Oh I love Geno, I see a lot of promise in this kid and think he's going to be a winner.

The fact is we just do not know what Geno will be. He has shown potential (just like Sanchez did) but he has fundamental issues which will take time to correct.

Does this fan base, coaches,GM and owner have the patience to develop a QB. It takes 3-5 years to become a above average QB in this league and 7 years to reach the peak. We will not really know about Geno until year 3 (if he starts correcting the flaws and we surround him with some talent.

My guess these boards will be lit up to get rid of him mid next season.

The fan base is irrelevant. It's about way more then patience, it's about a development plan and an able student with the talent and vision to be a top QB.

It doesn't take 3 to 5 years to become an average NFL QB. That's nonsense. Aptitude, talent and coaching aren't pre-determined. Andrew Luck is a very good QB as a rookie as was Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson. There are numerous examples of QB's stepping up in year 1, 2 and 3. That doesn't mean they don't continue to improve.

Did you pick 3 to 5 years because this was the break out year for Sanchez who won the starting job in the third pre-season game?

I think year 3 is when we can really start to judge Geno and see whether he'll be good or not. The front office has to do their part by bringing in weapons for Geno. But Geno has to actually have the mind for the game if not it won't matter.

Can you read it takes 3-5 years to become an above average QB. None of those Qbs you mentioned were above average Qbs until well after year 3. Big Ben flopped in year 3 when he was asked to carry the load.

Yeah that was it everything is about Sanchez such a brilliant poster.

Right Brady didn't make the Pro-Bowl in his second year, Wilson didn't go to the pro bowl as a rookie and Roethlisberger didn't have an outstanding rookie year followed up by a very good 2nd year.

All of them were top 10 QB's in the NFL the first time they stepped on the football field.

The Sanchez line was a low blow but you've been on your knees with Sanchez for so long I couldn't help it.

Tom Brady was well above average in year 3 (2002). Big Ben went over the handle bars of his bike before training camp in year 3. Hard to figure out what happens when they dump the load on him without taking that factor into account.

Luck and Wilson are currently 12th and 6th respectively in terms of QB rating and have thrown 28 TD passes and 9 Int's between them as their teams have won 6 and 8 games respectively through 8 and 9 in.

I don't know what your definition of "average" is but I am guessing it is something like Junc's definition of "average" or in other words a completely nonsensical invention to somehow make Mark Sanchez not look like the suck that he has been.

Can you show me some stats to back this up? For me so far, I see Peyton and Brady hitting their absolute peak in exactly year 7, but for Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, Eli, Flacco, Big Ben, Jay Cutler etc they hit their peaks before year 7. So I want to know if you have a list of some sort or some stat to show this is true?

"Interesting" QB prospects that will likely be gone by the time we pick, and any QB that will be available by the time we pick wont be a better prospect than Geno was, or at least not significantly better to where we would throw the towel in on Geno.

Bridgewater, Mariota will definitely be gone in the top 5. Manziel could follow in the top 10 if a team loves his athleticism, or he could very well fall. Tajh Boyd hasnt helped himself by going back for his Sr season, but he could still be a top 12 pick based on his potential and experience. I personally dont think Hundley is NFL ready, but he could be a 1st round pick. Then there are wild cards like Mettenberger and even Petty at this point.

Based in terms of prospects, the only QBs that I would consider drafting if they were at our pick are Bridgewater and Mariota. Theyll be long gone though.

For the Jets, the more QBs to go ahead of us the better. It just means a better prospect could fall to us. At this point, I think Geno has done enough, especially if he progresses the rest of the season, to warrant another year as the starter.

Bridgewater, he is gone at the bell

Mariota is going to fall, very unrefined, would be disaster for a team who had to start him immediately

The only qb with getting if he fell would be Bridgewater

You think 11 total TD's to 16 turnovers so far earns him the right to have no competition next year? Your standards are pretty low if that's the case.

You seem to jump to conclusions without much thought based on context.

Given what we have on offense (which is pure shit), and what he's done so far, yes, I think he's earned the starting job looking forward. Numbers arent everything, and Smith has clearly flashed talent so far. Now he certainly has made some poor decisions, many that are inexcusable, but IMO the good outweighs the bad. We also know that Smith was "raw" coming into this system, and that it would take time for him to adjust to the pro level. Dont forget that this is a QB that didnt drop back from center much during his college career.

Also, if you read what I wrote well enough, you would understand that this simply isnt a situation where its cut and dry. You have to consider the fact that in order to add "competition" through the draft, we'd have to spend a high pick. As Ive said, I dont think anyone that will be available by the time we pick will be a better prospect than Geno was coming out. That pick is better used putting talent around him in an offense that severely lacks talent.

What would you prefer- a good WR prospect to help Geno develop, or a QB prospect that is on a similar level to Geno when he was drafted, in the same talent starved offense?

So yes, I would rather build a team around Geno at this point, rather than spend another pick on a QB who will be forced to play with the same shitty supporting cast as Geno.

Mariota will go top 5. 31 TDs, 0 INTs, and all the physical ability. Some team will pick him very early.

You don't have to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a QB to get a blue chip prospect. How did I jump to conclusions you clearly stated in your post that you think he's done enough to warrant the starting job moving forward did you not? By the way most if not all of his turnovers have been due to horrid decision making on his part so nice try blaming it all on the receiving core. So you wouldn't add a QB in the off-season?

Have you not learned from the Sanchez era that flashes of greatness mean absolutely nothing if you make horrible decisions that lead to turnovers. What if Geno was to completely implode next season, thanks to your train of thought we now have no other prospects to turn to. Draft a QB every year until you know you have a sure thing, that's my belief, doesn't have to be in the 1st/2nd/3rd round but you take a good prospect when given the chance.

I agree...Go ahead Mr Idzik and draft a QB with one of our 7th round comp picks to keep our believers in this failed "draft one every year" theory happy, warm and fuzzy

That is the exact BILL WALSH theory. Take a QB low every year and mine for gold! In the mean time if a gem like Geno drops your way take him and develop him!

There are folks here that think he's going to fail because he's only a 2 year starter.

Guys going to be a real real good one. TB, Jax, Minn hell I could see Houston getting him and those teams would be set for a decade.

Nah dude, He can't make throws under duress...That is essential in the NFL, if you can't throw under pressure you are a dud.

Very easy to throw in the wide open offenses that Oregon. Run run run and throw to players in space. He needs to stay for another year

If Oregon played FSU, Bama or even Baylor they would have been blown out by a lot larger margin of points
