There's been an "epidemic" of injuries in and around the NFL - especially @ the offensive "skilled" positions. From ARodgers to Julio Jones, etc. many teams have suffered devastating personnel losses on the O-side of the ball & have used it as "reasonable excuse" for poor game perfs/record (Falcs for ex.). Losing your "top performers" to injury may lend validity to such, however NOT ONCE this season have I heard the JETS use injuries as a reason for poor play/loss. Looking at a JETS O'(that was not "blessed" with skilled pos players from the start), LOSE: a 2-time AFC-championship starting qb to a pre-season shoulder injury; a rb to a 4-game suspension, & 1st gm back tears ACL/lost for season; thier top WR who appears in 3-4 gm's then misses the next 52 with a bad hammy; 2 TE's - 1 suspended for PED's another via concussion -& a reliable & valuable 3rd down WR who suffered a painful, elbow injury replaced with a rookie QB, an unwanted NO Faint's RB & a trio of unknown rec'vrs named NELSON (who?), SALAS (what?) & SUDFELD (manager of a midtown laundromat?) & Brown re-tread CRIBBS (who sounds like comedian Kevin Hart) all of whom provided adequate play vs NO (& prior). Too often a "pity party" is thrown for teams that loses it's elite, but the JETS have soldiered on with this roller-coaster season defeating teams with heart & a @ss-kicking,beast of a DEFENSE despite that injury-plague that's affected them like so many other teams. Just wanted to get that off my chest & directed @ the 93.2% majority of Gi-AINTS fans @ my job. Thanks for the release!
Other than the point about Sanchez I would agree, it's been great watching these unknown guys step up and contribute. I think it speaks to a solid CS and good team leaders. We'll never know what we would have gotten with Sanchez this season, but personally I'd count Geno as a net gain at this point. Also, imagine the controversy that would've been stirred up having Sanchez on the bench during Geno's poor games this season - it would've been ugly. I think we're better off the way it worked out.
This team has actually been fortunate to be healthy on the lines both offensively and defensively.. As for the skill positions? A wise man once said "when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose."
Idzik preached 'competition' from the day he was hired. He's made it clear he'll have the 'next man up' when injuries hit.
Real talk. An ours are worse in a way considering we didn't have all that much talent to begin with. Heart and fire baby, next man up do ya job.
Seeing these young 'unknowns' step up and be really good speaks a bit to Idziks approach lately as far as bringing in fresh bodies (Nelson, and a few others I can't remember their names). Every team has really really good, young players buried on the depth chart. When you're buried on the depth chart, you don't practice with the ones. Hell, you probably don't practice with the twos. No one knows you and no one gets to see you play, except for maybe the 4th pre-season game. Take Snacks for example. If Ellis panned out even a little bit, Snacks would probably have been waived or at least be a player on the Jets you never heard of. The same goes with every other team. They are gold mines of young, untapped talent just waiting for the opportunity to break out in the NFL (before getting cut). So when Idzik brings in some unknown off some other teams practice squad, he could be the next Snacks.
Our injuries never get a mention when were discussed in the media. When we win the saints had injuries or the patriots had injuries. When we lose its because we just suck, I don't mind it though its funny to hear.
When Mike Tannenbaum said Schlauderaff was our Victor Cruz, he meant Snacks. And Howard. And Cumberland.
I was arguing with some Saints fan the other day. He said they only lost because of injuries. I replied, "The Jets were without their #1 WR, #2 WR, #1 TE, and #2 TE, plus their most explosive RB. Plus we have a rookie QB." Pathetic excuses.
That was my retort to a vaGiants fan that said today, the Jets only won because the saints lost Sproles and Colston isn't 100%. pffft
Does seem like most in the media aren't mentioning that not only are the Jets doing far better than predicted but they're doing it with a ton of injuries.
Because their initial predictions, were absolutely fucking retarded. And half of this board bought in. This was an 11 win team, the day Marty parked his ass behind his desk. And, we had to get a starting QB injured, and blow the NE week 2 game, and Pitt to not have 7 wins, with a rookie QB, and injuries on a level of last year at the skill positions.
This rite here, is my opening post in a condensed version!!! When Green Bay lost to the Chi'Town-Bares, "sport voices" pinned that loss due to ARodg's shoulder injury. With the "injury-excuse" (albeit, a somewhat reasonable 1 at that) attached, Green Bay can justify any future losses due to the absence of their "star" qb & NOT because they suck. The same can be said about the Pats if they ever lose Brady; - without him - would be a team (in my opinion, devoid of much talent save Gronk in the 1st place) using the injury excuse also. My JETS don't have the luxury of using that "excuse" because we were deemed a "glorified expansion team" from the start. Our O's #'s 1,2, 3 & 4 "skilled" are considered #'s 4,5, bench & practice squad "extras". The loss to the Ben-gurls was due to simply poor & lackluster performances on both the O' & the D'. However, the W over the Faints was not a fluke as it showed that brilliant game-planning & adjmts made on both the O & D along with "All Balls-Out" play can produce positive results. You can use "injury-bug" to certain extant, but it cannot be used entirely for poor play. My JETS have yet to use that as an excuse this season!
i have to say if this team had aaron rodgers, we'd be at a whole new level (of course receivers would want to come here to play, so i'm accounting that in)
The media only accepts injury issues when consider the patriots... Tom Brady blew because of injuries at the QB position my a$$
These injuries have been bad but if i do believe the next man up has done the job very well at each position. As previously stated, Geno obviously has had a nice season when he takes care of the ball, and also Nelson who i am a huge fan of. David Nelson seems to give it his all on every down. His blocking at the wide receiver position is a rare attribute, as well as his good hands. I hope he remains a jet after this season.
