Except for when it doesn't. Great effort in the second half today. 2 huge holds for FGs. The 4th down stand and of course the stop at the very end of the game where they didnt even give the Saints a chance. Not to mention the first half turnovers that got us the lead in the first place.
Yeah the front 7 coming alive made a huge difference. They dominated the O line at the end of the game.
Brees and Company benefitted greatly from two ridiculous roughing the passer calls, and a hold that erased an INT. Our defense played much better than the final numbers read.
It'd be nice if the offense could just get first downs at the end and seal the deal instead of just handing the ball back to our opponents.
I hear ya, but 3 ints against the pats in the 4th qtr kind of put that to rest. Plus with Ivory having a monster game plus having the lead and milking the clock, I guess it was the least of the poisons.
I agree with this. I really want to see this soon. It feels like it's been a couple years since our O has done this. The "4 minutes offense" as it's sometimes referred too. From what I saw we just rushed 4 all the time and it worked?
I'm not sure the concept of a shutdown defense exists any more in the NFL. The officiating is too tough on holds and PI's and general hands on the receivers at this point. I think the best defenses instead create inflection points where the game can swing suddenly. A good defense does that a few times a game. An average defense maybe once. The last drive just isn't that meaningful in an era where breathing on a star QB draws personal fouls and there are so many flags thrown down field. Rex's defenses create more game-changing opportunities than most. This despite often working with role-players in key roles. What we're seeing this year is the beginning of a dominant front 6 that will create lots of potential game-changing opportunities. The Jets need to solidify the back end but they've got a great beginning here. The good role-players in the run defenses, Sione Pouha and Mike DeVito, have been replaced by legitimate two-way star potential in Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison. That's why the pressure is there as often as it is.
It would help if there were skill players on the team that would make this possible. The Saints were completely selling out for the run in the 4th quarter and the Jets had nobody to make the saints respect the pass at all.
It was pretty bad after the 4th down stand when we went three and out and handed the ball back. Heck, my heart was still racing from Coples' stuff in the backfield I don't know how the D found the stamina to get up and play another series but full credit to our boys who came out and were able to close the game
I agree. I think you need a receiver that can outright win 1 on 1 versus the corner. We tried with Hill and it appeared that he wasn't interested in being part of the play. I can't blame the MM play-calling at the end there. If MM goes aggressive for the 1st down and it ends up with 3 incomplete passes and no time off the clock people would be livid. Running and getting time off the clock is at least something positive even if you don't get the first.
It's funny what happens when your offense doesn't turn it over a bunch. The defense actually stays fresh for most of the game. Who woulda thunk?
Yes. Hill ran the wrong route, and would have had an easy first down had he cut back when he was supposed to- you could see how disappointed and frustrated Smith was after the play.
Funny, I've said that often and people seem to dismiss it like that theory doesn't actually exist... Amazing when you actually see it in action...just like in the Pats game..
