You want a coach that doesn't believe his team can win a Super Bowl and can't coach up players? Good luck with that strategy.
I dont agree with the Gholston comparison for one Gholston wasn't even starting and two Rex inherited Gholston he wasn't selected by him. CB is probably the hardest position to transition to on defense because technique is everything. Revis struggled, Patrick Peterson struggled damn near every CB thats been chosen that high has struggled, give him time.
Revis did not struggle this bad at all. Revis was light years ahead of Milliner at this point in his career. Not even a comparison. A good benchmark to look at is Stephon Gilmore of buffalo. They are very similar players in size and style, college experience and competition, and draft position (Gilmore 10th in 12, Milliner 9th in 13).. Gilmore got picked on from time to time, especially early but routinely faced no.1 veteran wideouts weekly and looked the part from time to time, finishing strong. Milliner is getting killed by no. 3 wideouts (Marvin Jones) and undrafted rookie free agents (Thompkins).. both of which are young players like himself. Definetely discouraging
no, he was a monster and a surefire HOFer after his first eight games he had led the Jets to a 1-7 record on the way to 4-12 for the season.... I'm certain that if we could review the TGG archives for the 2007 season, the Browning Nagles of that season would have been screaming like banshees that Revis was another Jet draft BUST and needed to be cut
Milliner is a product of Alabama. Saban does not teach NFL- style CB techniques in the tough SEC. Most CBs from Alabama struggle with back peddling. Milliner sure is plus he had a shortened camp due to an injury and operation prior to camp. He had little to no benefit from OTA's. How about you put your money where your mouth is regarding Milliner? We will set a time limit. I say Milliner will be an very good CB in a year. Are you game or not? You can pick one member of this board to eval Milliner in a year and I will too.
I reckon this is one of Rex's motivational tactics: Put some pressure on Dee to snap out of it and live up to the expectations that Rex has just set. Will it work? We gotta wait to find out.
Ruben, the argument could be made that the only reason Millinger was drafted by the Jets at all was because of the uproar of the fanbase at the Revis trade. Woody still has to sell tickets and his already restive fanbase were up in arms albeit, realistic, over the trade. The last thing Woody wants to see is a Fan revolt. Especially with PSL's still on the market. Rex being the defensive guru/Head coach and perhaps with the knowledge that he was in effect interviewing for his extension, most likely pushed the pick to both Idzik and Woody since as we've been told, everyone has a voice on draft day. Rex loves his CB's as they fit in with the scheme Rex likes to run. That is, man coverage and blitzing from unlikely sources. Millinger is here because Revis isn't. Now that Millinger so far is not the instant replacement for Revis, two choices remain. Either we wait and see if Millinger is really better than Kyle Wilson, or admit we fckd up and draft another so-called "shutdown corner". The other thing going for Millinger is that Cro is expensive contract wise and w/o a restructure, is most likely gone. For better or worse, Millinger is here for the long haul.
Can't really be mad at what Rex said, I mean what other CBs have had impacts in this draft? DJ Hayden doesn't even start and is getting less and less reps as the season goes on.
Good post. Yes, part of the problem with Milliner concerns Cro's contract. How do the Jets let Cro go if Milliner can't hang in there as a starting cb? People say the Jets need to focus on O in the draft, but what are they going to do about the secondary?
The argument could also be made that at the time we picked Milner was the highest rated player on our board. That's not a stretch at all considering he may well have been the highest rated player on almost every NFL board when we picked. The conspiracy theories seem really crazy to me. I don't think the fans really care about replacing Revis. It's about the team and building for the future. Revis couldn't be signed and was coming off a terrible injury. The Jets made the right football decision trading him.
Biggs, you were around here back during the run up to the trade. You remember the firestorm it created. I'm pretty sure it played out pretty much everywhere in JetLand and being as PR minded as Woody is, he heard the noise. Hell, you couldn't turn on ESPN new york radio without some reference to the Revis situation. It was inescapable. No one disputes it was the right football decision. The motives might be less clear for drafting Millinger BPA or not. Right now, its all about the future of the Jets. There's no arguing that. At the time of the trade, it was all about trading "the best corner in the league" or should he get paid what he asked for and could we afford him. Once that happened, the fallout came. I think that the team felt it needed to replace Revis as soon as possible and did so. The downside of course is that if Millinger were playing at a high level, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Your connecting random dots that aren't connected. Did we pick Richardson because Couples has a rep as a dog? Did we pick Winters because our guard play sucked? Revis was the best CB in the league 2 years ago. Revis was coming off major surgery. Revis was looking to get paid stupid money. The Jets are rebuilding. Dee Milner wasn't a splash pick he was the top rated player on our board.
Way too early to judge. Milner has been really bad, but at least he gets his head around. He's not making the plays, but step 1 for a rookie QB is actually seeing the ball. Hell, Kyle Wilson is 4 years in and still doesn't do it. Milner is not making plays right now, but at least you can see some subtle signs that he's adjusting to the NFL game. Not much yet in terms of results, but its waaaaaaaaaaay too early to give up.
1. People need to stop using Revis as a benchmark. Revis is a top 5 corner of all time in NFL history. The pats next QB is not suppose to be be the next coming of Brady, The Ravens next LB is not suppose to be the next coming of Ray Lewis. We got lucky the Revis pick worked out the way it did. 2. Every person takes their own path of progression in the NFL. Comparing specific players development against each other is a stupid exercise. There are so many variables that play a role, trying to make any sort of correlation is dumb.
I have no problem with Ryan touting this kid, but his all-too-often use of comparative language is not needed. Saying you think Milliner's going to be "a good one" is all well and good, but when you have to say "the top" or "the best" you needlessly bring other team's players into the mix by inferring that Milliner will be better than any of them. I even hear this same "THE BEST" rhetoric when he's talking about their practice facility for crying out loud ...."we've got the best facilities....blah, blah" -- I wish Rex would just say "Atlantic Health is a top-flight facility" and leave it at that.
why? facts are it IS at least one of the three best in the NFL compare it with the quonset hut in the parking lot known as the Timex Performance Center that the Midgets are stuck at, for example
What might those subtle signs be that you are seeing??? The guy's been benched in 2 of his 4 games. An atrocious mental error that arguably cost the team a game up in New England. He wasn't even on the same side of the field as his wideout was. His technique is beyond terrible. No jam at the LOS. Can't cut out of his backpedal. Gets horribly burned deep every game by WR's low on their teams depth charts. 3rd and 16 WR screen against the Steelers he waves at his guy going by him. Haven't seen any support in the run game, either. Frankly, I'd settle for the guy to do SOMETHING correct at this point as any sign of progress. Of course it's too early to give up but there is no excuse for this level of performance. He looks like he's never played the position before much less anywhere near a Top 10 pick. To think the guy held out of camp the first few days after never seeing a single rep in OTA's. Sit him. Go with Walls/Wilson until he he beats them out in practice and earns his time back on the field instead of it being given to him when he walked in the door.
