NFL head of officiating says that the Competition Committee will look into implementing the NCAA rule, where taunting is considered a live ball penalty (if the play is still going when the taunting starts), with a 15 yard penalty being enforced at the spot of the foul. Golden Tate's moronic performance on Monday night prompted this, of course. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...-negating-tds-that-involve-taunting-penalties This obviously wouldn't change anything when taunting occurs after the player has crossed the goal line.
Golden Tate's disgusting display was exactly the type of disrespect I was talking about. There are laws and rules, some express and specific, some vague and catch-all. Professional athletes should not be treating other professional athletes in that manner. They should not need rules or penalties to come to that realization. Maybe I'm just an idealist, but this is the 21st century. Buy a clue. Penalize the crap outta these idiots. It's my favorite part of the justice system, woe as it is. _
Show ups When did respect for your opponents become a thing of the past? Their parents and former coaches should be embarrassed. I guess Tate learned nothing but football at ND.
Yes, if the taunting occurs after the player crosses the goal line the play is over and it's a dead ball foul. Currently in the NFL taunting is always a dead ball foul, whenever it actually occurs, but the NCAA rule is that if it occurs while the play is live it's a live ball foul, just like an illegal block or unnecessary roughness penalty.
I hate hotdogging but I don't think it should be penalized. All of these incidental penalties that don't impact the game are killing the game. I look at this as a sportsmanship issue. There are very few if any NFL players that didn't play multiple sports at every level going back to pee wee football or baseball. WTF happened to teaching sportsmanship and the respect of your sport and opponent as part of participating in sports at every level. Why are we rewarding players with attention that leads to earnings for their poor behavior? When NFL players act like this it trickles down to College, High School and below. It's only natural for kids to emulate the people who are at the top. This is like a bad feedback loop that needs to be unplugged. Rather then throwing a flag, their pee wee football coach, mothers and fathers should be invited to slap the shit out of them on national tv when they act like a fool.
Luckily, we rarely have to worry about our guys hot dogging in the endzone. Makes me sorta miss Tony "field goal fist pump" Sparano.
Tate is a dirty player. He commits a lot of penalties that go unnoticed and has a terrible attitude. I just wish he got tackled after that play because of his stupidity. With that said, I don't really like taunting, but I heavily enjoy endzone celebrations. They have been part of the game for a long time. Even taunting isn't that bad as it doesn't affect the actual game, just players talking junk to each other. Big whoop. It's just drama for the over-reactionaries.
