oh you mean the rookie qb, yeah we usually expect them to always have a smooth transition from week to week. he was a superhero 3 weeks ago, then a terrible qb, then he was great again last week and now he is terrible again. listen there are much bigger issues to look at coming out of this game than the qb throwing 2 pick 6s. they are definitely not what lost us this game.
He was also a guy who could and would go up and make a tough catch in traffic. In 2009 he was a much better receiver than Stephen Hill is today. No he doesn't. Cotchery was an outside receiver and a pretty good one. Kerley is a good slot receiver. There's a huge difference in terms of who they are covered by and what it takes to account for them. At the pace he's going he will be an average WR in about 2019 but in fact will have been retired for 4 years by then. Sorting out which of the mistakes are Genos and which are the guys he is throwing too is not easy but it is clear that everybody is making mistakes. That's what happens when you have rookie QB and a bunch of subpar WR's. Kerley, Holmes and Winslow are the only established receivers on the Jets at this point and two of them aren't playing. If we're lucky Nelson will continue to be serviceable and will not get hurt. It's a mess out there.
Did they lose us the game no -- but you want to see the guy improve. You want to see growth, understanding situations, understanding defenses, getting a feel for managing a game, making the right read, and the right throw. Aside from the Falcons game he has done something in every game to hurt the team. In 8 games he has multiple turnovers in 6 of them! The other 2 -- was his only clean game against Atlanta and the Pats game where his INT was a pick 6.
Oh no, Geno threw some interceptions! Rookies never do that! When you're being told to air it out, chances are, there'll be some bad throws. It's to be expected so it's not crazy that he's throwing them. It's difficult to have turnover free games though with a lousy supporting cast. When receivers aren't completely open, QBs have to throw them open, and it's difficult for even the best QBs to consistently do that. Geno is having to do that a lot more than he should be. I've seen at least a few interceptions happen due to miscommunications/poor routes from wide receivers, due to Geno having to throw to where he assumes the wide receivers will cut to. Most of the time Geno makes the right reads and does well, however, as the game gets more and more out of reach, Geno ends up trying to anticipate more, and try for bigger plays, which can end up with mistakes on both ends (WR and QB). As for your whole "his supporting cast is great" thing, if you think those guys are good, chances are you're thinking the supporting cast of every single NFL's team's QB is "good". Also, The rush yards mean nothing without context. It may look good that the Jets are running aginst a depleted Patriots front 7 or beating up crappy run defenses like Buffalo or Atlanta (they have a decent ranking in rush yards only because teams choose to pass more against them). Hell, a good portion of the rush yards are from Geno's runs, too. Anyway, I'm done arguing with you if you're going to try and convince me that a supporting cast of Powell, Hill, Cumberland, etc are playing well and are good enough for us all to expect Geno to thrive in his role.
Andrew Luck last year has 23 TD and 23 Turnovers. 1:1 ratio that is what you need from your rookie to be competitive. That is the number you see and go ok now can we build on that and watch this person develop into a real legit dangerous QB. You can't have Geno go 20 TD and 32 Turnovers and say wow this guy is the future! Let's build around him!
Air it out? His interceptions happened 6 yards from the line of scrimmage today. He wasn't even airing it out...he was hoping for a 5 yard gain. Also find it funny that people will make all these excuses for Geno - oh it's the receivers, oh it's lack of talent around him, oh he is forced to make throws...when is it not everything else and it is the QB? Dee Milliner has been benched twice for poor performance...Geno has had just as negative an impact on games.
The Jets are also not hiding Geno where they tried to hide Sanchez at every turn and tried to protect him from throwing. Geno's throw the ball 253 times through 8 games. Mark Sanchez through the ball 364 times throw 15 games. So basically if Geno throws a 111 times over the next 8 games, or 14 times a game, he will have thrown as much as Sanchez. Sanchez had 5 30+ attempt games in 2009, Geno has 5 through his first 8 games. In 2009 we rushed 37.9 times a game for a 4.5 average. In 2013 we rushed 30.4 times a game for a 4.0 average. In 2009 47% of our yards came through the air. In 2013 64% of our yards have come through the air. This really isn't a good comparison. The offensive talent was drastically different, the coaching was drastically different, and the overall strategy to learning about the QB was different. EDIT: It's just a silly comparison. The team is built completely different and the OL and run game in 2009 was superior to the one we have today. The WR we had in 2009 while not great are better than what we have today since Holmes can't get on the field. The better way to look at Geno is just watching to see how he progressed as he plays from game to game. He's cut down on some of the stupid things like drifting back and back and taking sacks while on the edge of FG range, but get him down big and clearly he isn't ready to help a comeback.
This is true. At some point this season Geno is going to have to stabilize his play and give the Jets a bench mark against which to assess their need to go get another QB in the draft next year. That doesn't mean he needs to play like Reggie Wayne was catching passes from him but he does need to give the Jets a feeling that consistent competence has arrived. If he's still throwing pick 6's to contested receivers in the flats it's going to give the Jets a major case of the yips about his potential moving forward and it should do that. Geno has the handicap of being the next guy up after a failed 4 year experiment at QB. He's not going to get a lot of time to iron out the glaring deficiencies in his game. That's not fair but it is what it is.
You know what that tells me? They need to take the ball away from geno a bit more because he is not capable of playing mistake free ball and letting him air it out so much is having more negative results than positive.
The fact that he is under a cheap rookie deal means that at worst you have a backup QB for a few years that will get to compete with whoever is drafted, signs, or re-structured
Exactly. That's what the Jets signed up for when they took him on the 39. They got a low-pressure year to evaluate him in and if they didn't like what they saw they got a do-over in 2014. It was great value on the 39 either way.
It tells me you realized your comparison is severely lacking. It doesn't say much about taking the ball out of Geno's hands. We took the air out of the ball against Pitt and got down multiple scores. Geno made 0 mistakes in the 1st of the Bengals game and were down 22 points. Down 21-10 against the Pats, we let Geno go for it and in the 1st NE game we let Geno go for it. Different results. The Jets FO wants to and should try to figure out what Geno has after 16 games this season. That means letting him throw. The team isn't strong enough like it was in 2009 to just sit on the ball and win games. You can't just slowly bring him along with a QB heavy draft next season. You need to figure out what you have in Geno. Since you didn't fully commit to him like Sanchez by trading up for him, you have less invested in him We have won games this season letting Geno throw and limiting his throws, we have lost games letting Geno throw and limit his throws. So far taking the ball out of Geno's hands has led to long 3rd downs and putting the ball back in Geno's hands in tough situations. EDIT: On top of that, look at our wins. They aren't the most complete wins. We aren't some talented SB team being held back by our QB, we are a team rebuilding trying to figure out if we have a QB. Why try to baby Geno to find out? He isn't getting beat up back there like Cutler does on a daily basis, he's staying healthy for the most part. He's not getting hurt and showing poise, why take the ball out of his hands only to most likely put it back in his hands in more difficult situations?
I am not sure where you see him overthrowing receivers left and right? I have only seen 3 INTs that he has thrown that was a bad throw or thrown off target. And those were only slightly off target. The only three INTs that would even be in question as poor throws would be the Pitt 1st INT and the 1st two NE INTs. The problem is poor decisions not poor throws. Geno said he was trying to throw the ball away against Pitt and he had no clue that the safety would be in the area. We have no reason mot to believe him. Cimini outright called him a liar in one of his I hate Geno columns. But given the accuracy of his throws and that we have never seen him actually overthrow a receiver by 5 yards this season besides the 15 yards on this play I think its fair to say Geno is telling the truth. The first NE INT should have never have been thrown but since it was it could have been placed a little out in front of the receiver. Was it a terrible throw? More a terrible decision and a great play by the defender. The second INT was thrown as a jump ball against 1 on 1 coverage with the defender underneath Hill on third down it was basically a punt that cost us 15 yards of field position. It was a good place to take a chance The ball should have thrown ahead of Hill rather than underneath. Was it a poor throw or a poor placement decision? The rest of his INTs are poor decisions or receiver error like on the 1st INT against Tenn where Hill failed to locate the Ball and ran past the ball giving the defender an easy pick. These INTs have been accurate throws but poor decisions. We are used to seeing a Jet QB overthrow the receiver by 10-15 yards resulting in an INT. These are not the type of picks we see from Geno. It is rare he throws more than 4-5 balls off target in an entire game. He will normally throw a lot more balls away than off target. The 2nd Pats game I counted 3 total throws that were not thrown dead on target. I have no problem criticizing Geno. He makes mistakes and makes poor decisions. But it is very rare he makes poor throws. The decisions, the mental game, getting on the same page with receivers and understanding of defenses is where he needs to improve. That is not going to happen over night. In regards to today Geno played a good game. His 1st half was well played. I did not see a play in the 1st half he could have done better with. The only questionable play was trying to fit that ball into Cumberland. The 2nd half I have no problem with the mistakes. He is airing it out trying to get us back into the ball game and Cincy DBs are looking for a big play. Those mistakes are fine. I am glad he was taking a chance and not worrying about putting up bad numbers. Those are the kind of mistakes that will not hurt us which he can hopefully learn from. We have seen him make great strides with his movement in the pocket. Hopefully during the bye week break we will see improvement on bad decisions.
Personally I think its unfair that magnify every mistake a rookie QB makes and say that we should have a do over next draft. Everything I've seen tells me he's going to improve, he was not bad today and the turnovers didn't cost us the game The defense set the tone allowing Manning...err....I mean Dalton score back to back touchdowns to start the game we were done from that point on
Geno had a bad game, but he clearly was not the preponderance of the problem today. The secondary and the rest of the offense was terrible along with Geno. The Jets front 7 stopped the run as usual but got no pressure for most of the game and did not have a great game. I was not impressed with the play calling on either side of the ball. If the Jets aren't getting pressure with the front 4, and the secondary isn't stopping anyone, its time to start blitzing. Dalton had all day, all day. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bengals were blitzing regularly, but inexplicably the Jets didn't use any screens to slow down the rush. Geno has shown that he has the ability and the touch to throw screens and hit backs in stride, where is this is the playbook? It was a disappointing game all around, but I was glad to see that Geno was fired up when things weren't going his way, rather then hanging his head and sulking like Muck always did.
So you are saying of his 13 INTs -- 3 were his fault? The other 10 were just amazing defensive plays? The second half against cincy i have a problem with his 2 pick 6s. The first one is right out of the half, first possession, time to step up and get the team pack in the game. He throws a bad throw to an area where he had 4 players. Seems like he decided he was going there no matter what. What did he see in that crowd of players on the outside that said this is the best option here? His second one he stared down Nelson, kept staring him down, and Jones just waited to jump the route. That is a bad play. That isn't a 20 + yard toss down the field trying to make something happen that was a 5 yard out that was thrown 4 seconds too late. Those plays are things you don't want to see. Down that many points most QBs in this league inflate their stats when defenses change coverage to not get beat deep, allow a lot of stuff over the middle, and Geno couldn't even get that going. I know the fan base is all gung ho for this kid to be the real deal but his numbers don't translate at this point into this guy being the future of anything aside from a backup.
You picked a terrible pick to focus on. That one was one of those where you need to know what the routes were, I find it hard to believe both WRs should have been there so Kerley's (clarey's) man was able to jump and cover David Nelson too. The one to Pacman would be a better one to focus on since that was him making a reading late or thinking his arm is stronger than it was. In reality these are probably two of the worse picks to pick in general to criticize Geno because we were down 22 points without him making a mistake in the 1st half. The better area to focus on if you want to analyze Geno is why we only got 6 points, and he didn't seem to be the first problem there. But yeah if you want to criticize Geno, this game is not a good on to focus on. Again, we were down 22 before he threw a pick. Would I have loved to see a comeback, yeah. Did I think a kid in his 8th game with David Nelson/Kerley as his best WR could do that, no.
Read his post again because you missed what he was trying to say on this. He said 3 of the Int's were bad throws, the rest were bad decisions or reads.
were a bad football team. this is the first really good team we played, we were bound to get destroyed and we will again next week. we aer a 5 win team. we were to start the year and people got amped becuase we already won 4 games. need to realistically look at this team. we are bottom 5-10 in every spot on the field
