I will say one thing regarding Geno If his hands were slightly bigger where he could just swallow the ball he would have the best arm in the league
when i read about former number one pick sam bradford still experiencing growing pains, i'm allthemore impressed by how geno has developed. he seems to be a very quick study. he is doing in weeks what seems to take most qbs a couple seasons. please dont regress!
i think you can probably add about 10-15 more receptions to geno's numbers if he had a slightly less droppy/more healthy receiving corps. and at least one fewer pick. (not that the other qbs haven't been through similar to some extent)
He's progressing really nicely. When I watch Geno play I see a guy who can win games for his team because of his talent. I never felt that with Pennington. Sanchez pulled some games out for us but I always felt the Jets hid him. Every time they asked him to take a bigger role in the offense he failed. Then the next game we would watch the Jets run it 35+ times. I know it's early with Geno but the Jets don't try to hide him from opposing defenses. Some of that is probably due to the fact that we have a capable OC but some of it is also due to the fact that Geno has more talent then the 2 aforementioned QB's.
What I also like about Geno is that to succeed with him you have to be very aggressive. it forces the OC to be aggressive with his passing play calls. When Marty tried to be conservative in the Steelers game during the first half it led to terrible offense. Geno came out gunning the next game with balanced play calling. This is a very small sample size though. Notice the difference between Sanchos and Genos deep ball throwing. The only way Mark ever threw the ball downfield was off play action other than that you barely saw him take a shot. Geno barely gets play action called which I kind of like. Matt Shaub used to only throw bombs with play action now look where he is now.
Watching Geno's throws, I often catch myself saying Wow out loud. His spirals, pace, and placement are really eye popping at times. I remember watching guys like Favre, Elway and Moon, and how mechanically correct their throws were, and how the throws were like darts with a flick of their wrist. Not trying to anoint Geno into that class of QB, but it is nice to not have a noodle-armed weak QB tossing the ball out there. In addition, his ability to mount comebacks and be calm under pressure as a rookie is a great quality too. He has made a few (and there will be more) bonehead plays as a rookie, but once he studies the game more and gets some mentoring from Gararrd and MM, I think he will only improve.
That's exactly how I see him, too. I see a lot of upside to this guy; and I think his arm will get stronger. But will his confidence increase, as well? That remains to be seen.
Has done more than I ever thought he would. I didn't think he would keep control of the ball and move the pylons regularly too. He must stay in the film room half the day. Will be amazing if he lives up to all the potential he is just beginning to show. A big part of his growth will be if Rex is fired after this year. It could hurt his growth.
I've seen all the young QBs play and the old, every so often they'd make those 'what the heck was that' throws to wide open receivers. Andrew Luck is especially guilty of that. Like the throw that blew Wayne's ACL. I'm not talking INTs because DBs get paid millions too. I've yet to get mad at Geno for throwing a doink. Even the INTs he threw when you re-watch the game you kind of understand it. He seems to not leave many plays on the field. I think it's because not only he is a gifted passer with his beautiful throwing motion but also very seasoned coming from a system where throwing 50 passes was standard. His ball placement gives me goosebumps sometimes. Geno is perfectly suited for the air-raid offense and once we put a big time receiver alongside him together with Kerley and Hill, I can see MM taking some notes on Geno's days at WV. And I'm going to say this and It's just my opinion. I believe Geno will turn out to be the best QB among all the young QBs. Yes, that includes Luck and RG3. Because in this modern NFL you gonna need to throw the ball a lot and accurately all the time. That Geno deep ball accuracy is gonna hurt a lot of teams soon. Geno Smith, steal of the 2013 draft. Great time to be a Jets fan.
Maybe not Luck or Wilson But a very good chance of better than every other drafted since 2008 at least Sent from my BNTV400 using Tapatalk
This is my gut reaction, too, especially after seeing Wilson in that Cardinals game. Man, that kid's got a lot of awareness - it's what separates him from RGIII, Locker, Tannehill, and Kapernick. On balance, Geno displayed a lot of that last game, particularly in the 3rd quarter (*the best quarter of Jets football in a decade*), so Tut could be right. We'll just have to revisit the prediction this time next year.
Good to read stuff like this... http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...g-extra-time-players-days-141035502--nfl.html
I'm glad they aren't hiding him like they did Sanchez. He has to learn how to play the position through success and failure.
Interesting how we heard many posters say before the season that much of Geno's success was because threw he throw so many bubble screens to Austin and Bailey. His stats were inflated due to all the YAC they ran for. We don't hear that anymore. MM is taking shots down the field with this kid and the offense is getting chunk plays. His sack total is higher because he waits for routes to develop downfield but has also hit some bigger plays because of it. Just one anectodal note. The opening play of the game was that 25 yard beautifully lofted touch pass to Cumberland on the sidelines. I was really impressed with the touch and loft he had on that ball which traveled over 30 yards in the air.

Exactly my point. The "ground and pound" obsession was a silly thing and its clear Rex and crew has learned from the past in that you need to break-in a qb early and not limit him. Sent from my LG Optimus F3
Lousy game by Geno, I felt this was behind the Titans game for being his worst. What does him in is when we have to throw because of a lousy running game(Though CIN stops the run and then some) and when we are down by so much, so early because of inept defensive play. We need to get the ball every time I feel to start every game. That way we can run and pass together and not have our defense who always sleepwalks early in games get torched left and right. Deferring or not getting the ball to open the game is too risky, hence why it was huge for the Jets last week when Geno delivered a great opening drive to go up 7-0. Regardless though, Geno threw some passes that can't happen. Pacman Jones gambles, he has been doing this for years. Throwing that late, choreographed throw was asking for trouble...just a lousy throw.
