The problem is the patriots were smart enough to run the hurry up even when a pass was incomplete which makes its near impossible to actually dial up a blitz package. Your pretty much forced into Vanilla defenses in that situations just to avoid incorrect alignment.
I was looking for a screen pass to the running back on 3rd instead of a run up the middle, specially with the Pats having moved up the safeties in the box, but a win covers up the bad the play calling
I hated the 56 yard field goal attempt. Very easily could have costed us the game. I saw no problem with pinning Brady deep and letting our D go to work.
It was the right call. Folk was probably 50/50 to make the kick and win the game. Brady was at least 50/50 to be able to drive for a FG off of a punt. Why give the opponent the ball and the 50/50 shot instead of keeping it and taking the 50/50 shot? Possession of the football is by far the biggest factor in terms of what the current game state actually means. Giving the Pats the ball was giving them control of the result for better or worse.
I think it was a bad decision. Too long an attempt,. I'm sure Rex did not want to lose in OT by a FG and probably thought his D could not stop Brady again. I also did not like the play calls (all running) in OT.
I was fine with the 56 yrd FG try for the win. We had the ball and a chance to win it right there. Punting and praying for a Brady meltdown in the final minute hasn't worked out too well for teams.
It was the wrong decision to play for a long FG, if that's what you are left with after attempting a couple of safe passes to get the kicker closer fine. But to have the mindset of playing exclusively for a 56 yard FG is not good game management.
Good call. Folk has been absolutely money this season, and Quigley has been extremely mediocre. Chances are, Brady starts at the 20 if we punt. I think the odds of Folk making a 56 yarder are/were higher then the defense forcing NE to punt with Brady starting at the 20.
Fair point. But our defense was playing well. If we can pin the Patriots deep and get a stop we can get the ball with potentially good field position to start our drive with. If you miss that kick your giving the defense very little margin for error.
I actually think it was a bad move going for it from 56 yards but I think they were pre-committed to the kick. It seems like the two running plays were an attempt to pick up a few yards and keep the ball in the middle of the field. If we get 2 to 4 yards instead of losing 2 or 3 yards on those 2 plays it's a very makeable 49 to 50 yarder. I really think the decision to kick it was made on 2nd down.
It's simple math, I don't understand why people are saying this was a bad decision. -------------------- 40-50% chance folk nails the 56yds In the case he misses, probably 80% chance we lose the game with pats getting great field positon. Overall, This will give us ~60% chance to win the game. -------------------------- If we punt it, we are clear underdogs with the pats having the possession and all they need is a FG(even if we pin Brady deep)
Tell me what the stats are for FG percentage over 55 yards outside in the NFL the past 5 years. Throw out all the dome games. I can't find it but the 40 to 50% seems high.
I had no problem with FG attempt. Folk is having that kind of year. I did however not like the conservative calls before that. I suspect they were thinking long FG try all the way, and didn't want to give up a sack...
48 yarder sure, a 56 yarder in sudden death? Brady barely has to move the ball for Gastkowski for the win. I thought the last drive play calling and decision to kick a 56 yarder was terrible. And if the Jets didn't get what I would call a miracle call we would all be piling on right now. BUT that didn't happen so who gives a shit, Jets won a big game.
Not one of the naysayers has pointed out the kick was short...because it wasn't. In Folk's range and only slightly off. Much better than conceding the ball to Brady with a punt - just check back on some od the same complainers' comments in the game thread when New England won the toss.
