I think Zach Mettenberger will be the Tom Brady of this draft class late round pick with the biggest upside over the years. All the tools , footwork, Arm just not sure if he got the mental aspect to be a next Tom etc etc.
Word is as many as 7 could have 1st or 2nd round grades. Going to be a massive class for QBs. And no Matt Barkleys or Tyler Wilson's or Ryan Nassibs or Tyler Brays among them. _
I like what I've seen from Geno so far. If history is anything to go by, 6 of those QBs that have a 1st or 2nd round grades will be career backups. Maybe 1 of them will be a long time starter, maybe 3 of them are long time starters, you never know. I'm just glad that we got a QB that has all the tools, physically, and from all reports mentally, to become a good NFL QB.
Maybe history is no factor in determining the future. Maybe all seven of these guys become real players. You never know. _
That's pretty much what I meant when I said that maybe 3 of them would be long time starters. I'm just trying to be a little more realistic. QBs are taken every year, but every year about half the league is looking for a potential QB of their future, wether that's by drafting another QB or developing the one they recently drafted.
Brady started for two years at Michigan. If he'd started for 3 he'd have been a 3rd or 4th round pick. The point is that he had some data points to go on, just not enough to be a valued prospect. Mettenberger is in the same boat. He doesn't have 3 years worth of results and his junior season wasn't particularly good, similar to Brady.
Quartebacks are traditionally overdrafted. 2013 draft was just an incredibly weak crop of QBs. All of these guys are going and going early this year. Minny, Browns, Oakland, Texans, Jags, Bucs, Cards are all going to be looking for a QB in round 1 or 2 latest and I wouldn't put it past Texas, Philly, Rams looking for one too. _
Wow great drive by Teddy. Beautiful spin move to avoid the rush and a bullet across the body while rolling to the left and then a gorgeous lofted TD to the back of the endzone. _
If Manziel and Mariota and Hundley all get taken in the 1st next year the message that the NFL will be sending is really quite forboding. The message is going to be "we don't know how long we're going to be going at this point and we need to grab a QB now at any cost because of that fact." It's going to be like the young fish that would get thrown back normally but because the catch is so limited they get kept and eaten instead. Think about what the QB draft in 2015 is going to look like if all the really promising sophomores from 2014 get drafted? I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that none of these guys are getting drafted next year. It just doesn't make sense for the NFL from a holistic perspective and it's going to get a few GM's fired as well.
So 3 guys who could become franchise QBs and who pretty much everyone has pegged as a 1st or 2nd rounder is not going to get drafted AT ALL because GMs are going to look at them from an holistic perspective of the NFL? You just reminded me it's time for cocktails. _
I know you don't like Manziel but did you see him today? He looked incredible. McShay was commenting about how much stronger his arm is this year and how he's become so much better of a passer. I've never seen him in person but he's been hitting guys outside the numbers--so much more than last year. Not anywhere near Teddy, but his arm-strength doesn't look like the problem most were thinking it was going to be. Btw, what GMs of unestablished losing teams DON'T think like the bolded part. _
As poorly as I thought Sanchez played is last two years here, he showed promise in his first two seasons... And he had less experience than any of these QBs that are being talked about as a top 10 pick. It doesnt help my case that Sanchez is now considered a bust and Tanny is fired, but not many really disliked the move of taking Sanchez at 5 to where they were calling for Tanny's head. At the time, Sanchez was a good pro prospect, and despite being extremely inexperienced, he was probably going to be drafted in the top 10 no matter what scenario played out. We very well could see 4-5 QBs go in the 1st round this year. Teddy and Mariota are top 5 locks at this point. Manziel and Boyd look to be top 15 picks (although I thought the same of Geno last year). Some people love Hundley and Mettenberger, and a team may take one of them in the 1st. QB is about the only position that you can justify reaching at. Even if Geno Smith wasnt a top 15 player in some people's eyes, the Jets could have justified taking him at 13. Its the most important position, and if you hit at that position, your franchise can have a lot of longterm success. If you miss though, you better hope you're not on the chopping block. I for one am rooting for as many QBs to be taken in the first because it only means that there is a chance of a better prospect to fall to us.
Very well said. Mariota IMHO will definitely go top 5. He could be a special player and I don't let lack of experience deter me from taking that talent. _
People looking at Mariota as a first round QB are forgetting that half the guys taken there are busts that kill their franchise and that as a sophomore Mariota will have a larger than usual bust chance. Who exactly is going to risk busting their franchise for 3-5 years by taking a sophomore who has played QB for 2 years for Joey Harrington's alma mater?
Its a copycat league and teams are gonna look at the success a similar player like kaepernick has had and feel their coaching staff can bring out similar production. Sure it's a big risk but it's not as big a risk with the rookie wage scale. Mariotas raw tools are off the chart, if used correctly i think he can thrive pretty quickly
Or Dan Fouts alma mater. So stupid looking at the school as a predictor of success in the NFL. Has no basis in reality unless you believe in the Easter Bunny or Hexes. You know the Red Sox didn't win a WS. Until they won. _
missing on a QB isn't as bad as it was in years past because of the rookie salaries now. Before, QBs drafted in hte first round were getting massive contracts that crippled the team if he didn't pan out (Jamarcus Russell signed a $61M contract with $32M guaranteed...) Now, if your first round pick turns out to be a bust, its going to set you back in time, but it doesn't handicap your ability to sign other players
