Geno Smith: Tracking Stats

Looks decent to me. Is that INT % really that high?

 

Don't see why he doesn't use his feet a little more. He has to be more mobile than an Andrew Luck or Wilson

Agreed. I think he has a promising future with this team, but my main gripe (other then the obvious ball security) is that he doesn't use his legs enough. He runs a sub 4.7 40. Everytime the pocket collapses and he seems to be able to scramble for that first down. Wish he did it more.

 

I suspect Geno's had it drilled in his head that a successful QB has to hang in the pocket to make plays. Hopefully, his mobility will become more of a weapon when he learns to balance it with making plays from the pocket.

 

That looks like the case. One of the best attributes of Russell Wison is his decisiveness. When the pocket breaks down and he decides to go he goes. There is no in between with him. Geno hopefully grow into this as he becomes more comfortable with his role.

 

maybe i am incorrect, but i've seen all the the game 2x but i've never seen geno pump fake...anyone else notice that or am i not seeing it?

if i'm rite, should geno add pump fake in his repertoire

 

I remember him utilizing the pump to perfection and the commentators making note of it

 

There weren't many highlights from yesterday the other day, but in the 2 minute drill to end the 1st half, Geno threw two quick outs to the sideline on two consecutive plays.

The Steelers then looked to be in straight man coverage and Kerley was in the slot and Hill out wide to him on the right hand side. Kerley had the short out route and Hill's defender left Hill to jump it, and Geno didn't pre determine to throw there. He saw Hill and hit Hill and Troy laid a big hit on Hill. That was nice to see that Geno didn't get sucked into that potential INT.

Granted, not very many bright spots Sunday but I liked that.

 

Just checking in here, but there is a pathological hater here who continues to spout how dropped INTs are really real INTs and how fumbles irrespective of whether they are recovered or not are fumbles so do we need to add the two dropped INTs and the one fumble Geno recovered into the stats?

Just want to make sure when the criticism of Geno is recounted we use the same standard as has been used by these idiots in the past.

I know the member you're referring to, and in all fairness he's just mentioning another stat that is rather helpful. I haven't seen him say that "dropped INTs are really real interceptions". That stat he's talking about, when used consistently on all QBs, does take the element of luck out of the equation. I think the stats that the OP is using are more than adequate for the comparison being made. The stat that you are referring to was brought up to make the point that MS interception totals would have been much higher had the potential INTs not been dropped. btw, I am not a MS hater. I was a supporter until about the midpoint of last season. Sorry to bring up MS in this thread, but I thought some clarification was in order.

 

I really hope MM stays more agressive this week than last. Offense was way too conservative. Let's see what the kid has. I'm ok with the occasional turnover if we are making big plays.

 

Stats show Smith has had more INTs and Lost Fumbles than any of the other QBs shown above. He is on track to smash Sanchez's worst year in turn-overs. The reason everyone hated Sanchez was the bad decisions and turn-overs, but you all love Smith?

 

no, most hated sanchez because he was still turning it over after 3-4 years. rookies turn the ball over it is a known fact.

btw where were you last week when geno lit up mnf?

this^^^ The funny thing was that it was a very conservative game plan until the end of the game, and Geno then had to play aggressive, and the Steelers knew it! Our offense became very predictable. MMs game plan for the Falcons was very well balanced, mixed, and as a result, very effective.

 

It really jumps out at me that geno has more yards than any if those guys through 6 weeks. Obviously, they may have had bye weeks, but MM is throwing the ball a ton. This is surprising considering how conservative the offense has looked.

Btw, Geno throws a beautiful deep ball. Geno---->Hill could be something special if the kid cuts down the turnovers.

Well you see Mark Sanchez was drafted in 2009. This means he played 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013. 4 years total.

Sanchez made eerily similar mistakes in his 4th year as Geno has made in his first 6 games of his career.Mark Sanchez started game #s 47-61 in season 4, Geno started games 1-6 so far.

Any rational person will say we need to wait to see what exactly what we have in Geno. It's really hard to judge within the first 6 games started of a QBs career.

Jay Cutler threw for more TDs in his first 6 games than Big Ben, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees. Matt Flynn has 11 TDs through his first 3 games started! Aaron Rodgers had 11 in his first 6 games started. They really don't tell you much at all. You need to see how a rookie progresses through his first year, and that doesn't really guarantee anything, just gives you an actual look at the player.

So overall, you are just being silly comparing a 4th year player to a 6 game started rookie. If you don't see this point, you really should look into learning about it.
